Is a predominantly white dress acceptable for a gay civil partnership ceremony?

I have a bit of a dilemma. And i've asked somebody close to the couple who thinks it won't be an issue

I am attending a civil partner partnership service for a gay male couple.

The dress I am planning on.Wearing has a white background, but it is covered in coloured embroidery. It is predominantly white though. I am going to wear jacket with it that is a colour and also my accessories won't be white.

Do the no white dress rules apply even at a gay civil ceremony with two grooms?

I think you really need to ask the couple directly.

zurigo · 05/08/2026 14:29

I would check, but since the two people getting married are male you're unlikely to be mistaken for a bride, because there won't be one!

xOlive · 05/08/2026 14:38

I’d ask the couple but I personally wouldn’t.
It’s a wedding and I’d avoid wearing white so I wouldn't be mistaken as a bride, passers by/the public might congratulate you.
The couple themselves might have absolutely no problem with it though so check with them personally.

WeddingDressguest · 05/08/2026 14:55

It isn't a wedding, actually they are already civil partnered. And this is just the after party for people who didn't attend.

The jacket i'm wearing with it will make it look as if i'm just wearing a white skirt with but it has given me food for thought, and I will reconsider. Thanks

A Random woman wearing a white dress with lots of colour on it and a coloured jacket when there's no church involved. And we're just going to an afterparty would random people stop me on the streets on the way there and assume i'm getting married? Sounds like an ai hallucination.

OP if you’re so sure then why are you asking?

Freda69 · 05/08/2026 15:11

My son and his husband got married last year and they just told me not to wear black and no jeans. I’m sure you can wear whatever you like and feel comfortable in.

Did you completely miss that i said this in a post just above what you said?

"but it has given me food for thought, and I will reconsider. Thanks"

I think people see what they want to see just so they can post a sarcastic comment. Not sure what satisfaction it gives people, but there we are.

I would not. It is a wedding.

Blimms · 05/08/2026 18:45

I’m not sure why you are being rude to posters who have kindly taken time out of their day to respond to you.

Macaroni46 · 05/08/2026 18:46

If you feel the need to ask, then probably best wear something else.

Lararoft · 05/08/2026 18:53

They may wear white suits for the ceremony like a male couple I know did. So I would definitely either check with them first or choose a different colour.

They are already civil partnered. This is the party to celebrate.

Absolutely fine.

MushMonster · 06/08/2026 06:45

OP, you are clearly going to wear white to this. So why are you asking anyone? You already made your mind up.

CypressMoon · 06/08/2026 06:50

Does it look bridal? If so, don't wear it. If not, it's fine. If the skirt has lots of coloured embroidery on it, no problem. If it's long with a bit of pale embrodiery around the hem, I wouldn't.

StormGazing · 06/08/2026 07:05

Can you link the dress so we can see it?

Likeiloveyou · 06/08/2026 07:07

I wouldn’t.

LlynTegid · 06/08/2026 07:08

I see no issue, though think you should talk to the couple as a consideration. They will possibly welcome your giving such thought to their special occasion.

Edited

I don’t know what an ai hallucination is.
When I went to the registry office to register my DD’s birth, there was a wedding party out in the street and lots of people were congratulating them. You’ve come on Mumsnet for opinions, I’ve given you my opinion and you’ve called it an ai hallucination 🤷🏼‍♀️
My actual opinion on this topic in general is if you’re questioning your wedding guest outfit, it’s probably inappropriate.

W0tnow · 06/08/2026 09:48

I feel that if there were any situation where the ‘thou shall not wear white to a wedding’ rule could be broken, it’s this. I’d not judge anyone for being dressed in an entirely white dress. We are talking about two men getting hitched, people!

The entire dress is covered in large embroidered patterns involving 3 different colours. The background is white and i will wear a non white coloured jacket with it.

This thread perfectly exemplifies the madness of Mumsnet wedding threads. OP, I agree, I think you'll be fine - but ask the grooms or someone close to them if you want to be sure Smile
