What shoes?

Hello,
Off out on Friday evening with some colleagues and plan to wear this. Will be going a few bars. Not feeling great about myself at the minute and ChatGPT has told me the dress does nothing for my shape but unfortunately, I just have no waist at the minute due to weight gain (perimenopause 😩) so please no comments about how it does nothing for my figure as maxi dresses are the only thing I feel comfortable in right now 😭
Anyway, what shoes would you wear? Black flat sandals, black heeled sandals, trainers? I have no gold shoes.
Does the outfit look ok overall? I will also be wearing a bracelet that matches the necklace.

Did you change your mind about the jeans and top or is this another night out? Anyway the dress is nice, flat black sandals will look good with it

Nope same night out. I sold the jeans that everybody hated on Vinted and the other jeans are too big 😂

With regards to the shoes, I have ballet round flats too ☺️

That style dress is very “in” right now. I have a couple, one red and one brown and wear them with heeled sandals but I’m not as tall as you and like a bit of extra height. You look lovely, ignore the stupid AI bot!

Pleased to read this after reading comments about it looking like fancy dress 😂

Dress is lovely - I wish I could wear things like that but am a plump 5'2er and would resemble a hot air balloon! Love the chunky sandals, and as a PP said a decent bra.
You look great.

TheyGrewUp · 03/08/2026 17:54

It's a lovely dress and you look smashing in it. I hope you have a great night.

I'd wear cream shoes - chunky sandals, kotten heels, ballerinas, whatever floats your boat and is comfy enough to keep you smiling into the wee small hours.

runnersfeet · 03/08/2026 17:58

I'd go trainers and a light colour bag and avoid matching black accessories. The dress looks great on you 😊

amidsummernightsdream · 03/08/2026 18:04

The dress looks lovely on you. If you wore with the same style as in the asos pic in black it would look very current.

If you dont want to wear a kitten heel, just go with flats version. Flip flops are eveywhere

That would be a very stylish outfit!

TealReader · 03/08/2026 19:01

I’d go ballet flats. Or chunky sandals. Have you heard of the “wrong shoe theory”? I’m a big fan of wearing an ugly shoe with a pretty dress. I think the chunky sandals could look very cool.

NoMullet · 03/08/2026 19:07

I would wear my sparkly black or red ballet flats with that. Lucky you being tall and gorgeous. Enjoy!

Moanycowbag · 03/08/2026 19:47

Why are you asking chat gpt what you look like? the world it seems has gone mad

Thanks for all the comments. Think I’ll go with the majority and wear my chunky sandals.

I liked the light jeans! But the dress is lovely it looks great on you, wear some flat black sandals rather than ballet and gold jewellery, you’ll look fab

pastadish · 03/08/2026 20:41

I would wear a finer black sandal rather than big chunky ones. The bottom part of the dress is quite big or flouncy or whatever the word is and finer shoes might look better. But try both on and see what you prefer

A witche’s costume? 😩🙈
For the person who asked, I’m 5’8” but I think the length of my torso must not be normal as I have this issue with lots of dresses 😂

Not a witch's costume but it made me think of Snow White.

Gooseling · 03/08/2026 23:01

Ignore ChatGPT. Your figure looks absolutely fine.

I’d wear black block-heeled sandals. Trainers would look too casual.

Wiseowl18 · 03/08/2026 23:13

Lovely dress & you really suit it. I think it would look great shorter too & both lengths with gladiator style sandals 😃

Good idea!

Why not take pics with chunky & ballet & whatever else you have & post them here for some withering putdowns opinions?? 😁

Is the angle you've taken the photo at maybe distorting things a bit, OP? As it makes the top part of the dress look as long as the skirt section - but on the ASOS website that's not the case, & as you're quite tall I'd assume it would follow similar proportions on you? Perhaps that's why Chat GPT was negative (though I have no idea why you asked it in the first place!).

I'm not suggesting either Toteme or JD Williams (the first two images - from one extreme of price to the other!), apart from as images showing the type of thing I mean. But I think that adding footwear &/or bag that are, say cream & black raffia, to tie the top & skirt colours together visually, would work well? Less stark looking? (The second two photos of bags are Etsy & House of Fraser, btw.)

This style is very popular?

Yes, & they would be fine with the dress.

But (& maybe it's just me!!), I am getting fed up of the fact that these "heeled flip-flops" really are everywhere!!! It happens every so often with certain items of clothing (the infamous one being that dotty Zara dress about seven years ago). It just puts me off something really quickly?

Actually, it might well be me - as I'm the same with films & TV shows that everyone starts talking about ... I find it really offputting!

dreamingofgoodhair · Yesterday 08:10

Flat black sandals. Dress looks great.

Pearlstillsinging · Yesterday 11:01

The dress suits your shape! What does ChatGPT know? Ignore it, use your mirror and your own judgement.
As for shoes; wear what feels most comfortable, I would probably go with the chunky black sandals but when I was your age I would definitely have worn heels.

OrangeLane · Yesterday 14:55

I think the dress is lovely on you. I'd add lots of gold accessories.

Have a lovely night out!

Rumpledandcrumpled · Yesterday 14:59

The dress looks fine on, but it’s very dressy for a few bars, do you not have jeans, trousers, a skirt maybe? It does feel a bit over dressed if I’m honest.

and I’m unsure why folks are saying chunky sandals, they don’t work with such a light material, it would be thin strapped sandals if anything.

but I’m sorry, I think it’s over dressed for a casual night out,

Friday night in town though? Some of the people I’ll be out with will be very dressed up.
