The crap curly hair products have that don’t work.

Picture pending approval but basically Umberto Giannini and Aussie curry products I’ve tried are absolutely useless and make my hair feel horrible.
I run a lot and in this heat get very sweaty so need to wash my hair every run. I can’t be dealing with drying and straightening so need to find something that will keep my major frizz under control so I can wash and just let it dry.

Any suggestions other than these?

Sorry but I love the UG range! I use curl whip mousse and the original gel. I used to use the shampoo as well but I get the same results with a cheaper one and just Aldi basic conditioner.

Styling it soaking wet and creating a gel cast is the best way to keep definition as it dries - along with diffusing! Mine is absolutely crap if I air dry but really defined with a dryer and the cast then scrunched out.

Love UG curly whip and gel
You need the gel cast
Are you apply enough and then scrunching, drying air or diffuser and LEAVING ALONE?
Sorry to shout but you absolutely have to stop doing anything to it once its dry
Also a silk bonnet, I pick my curls up and place into the bonnet to preserve them

If you dont like the shape then a good curly hairdresser can help you , mine has a ton cut out of it or it weighs down

I use any shampoo then garnier leave in conditioner for wavy hair the spritz with their spray, it’s not too expensive as regularly on special at boots

hahabahbag · 01/08/2026 08:28

Ps I wash, scrunch with their spray leave in conditioner, spray and leave to dry naturally. Looks good

Only thing that works for me and I swim all the time. Pantene shampoo and conditioner, followed by the pantene leave-in. Then Colour Wow curly spray. That spray is awesome - total game changer. I cant bare crunch at all so hate mouses and gels. This feels like I have nothing in.

If i dont follow this routine (and I have every bloody product under the sun) I look like gene wilder. With it, its soft and ringlety.

My daughter is super curly whereas I am curly/frizzy and have always straightened my hair. I now need to convince a reluctant growing girl that curls are beautiful as I refuse to straighten hers often. We have tried so many products it’s unreal and what works in hers doesn’t work in mine and vice versa.

The common theme to make our curls work without frizz is avoid silicone - shampoo bars seem good and lots of silicone free conditioner. Curly girl methods of conditioner washes make both of us have an itchy scalp - just doesn’t feel clean.

In the summer I ‘go curly’ as you can shower in the morning, let it dry naturally and look presentable in time for work. I like kms curl cream, Moroccan oil and tiny bit of eco gel. DD is great with cheap boots curl cream or boots mousse and eco gel, but often slicks it into super tight pony tail with plait before I get to her 😂

Umberto curl refresh spray is great for day 2.

Oil leave in’s makes it much softer. Oddly although I usually avoid silicones the elvive extraordinary oil (which I think is a bottle of silicone!) is a good alternative to all other products of our hair needs a break from goop - makes for softer curls which drop faster, but retain separation and don’t frizz. Needs washing really often though as it quickly shifts from shiny and lovely to greasy and horrible.

Main thing is everyone is so different it really is trial and error.

And I only wash once a week, never blowdry (unless its a night out), and in between washes all I do is water spray. I wake up looking like Ive escaped from an asylum but light waterspray and scrunch and it dries real nice. I do have mad curly hair but I dont fight it anymore - just embrace the wildness. I get lots of compliments so thats nice.

Garnier air dry curls

seanconneryseyebrow · 01/08/2026 08:43

I know everyone says about silicones being the devil for curls, and I spent years fannying about doing the curly girl method and no-poo, diffusing etc. However, I gave up recently cos I took up swimming and had no time for all that faff and discovered my hair loves silicones. I go full pantene (I know - the horror!), but it looks loads better than before so Im just goign with it and my hair I just leave to airdry with minimal effort.

Boots Curl Creme is my favourite - and only costs €2.99!

UsernameHoarder · 01/08/2026 08:49

For me, you have to dividde the products into types.

There are the curly products that are greasy. Great for dried out hair and coils.

There are the ones that leave a cast. Like gels or boots curl creme in the pot.

Then there are the mousse type products that are weightless.

Some cross over. There is then the issue of application. How you apply to products matter.

Then theres the day 2 issue or refresh issue.

For frizz, one of the best ways to control it is not to scrunch or touch your hair. So a cast making product probably isnt what you want. But go too heavy with the greasy type products and your hair will be lank. You also want to avoid anything with alcohol in as it will dry your hair and create frizz.

In your shoes,I think I'd try some of the olive oil gel. Apply to sopping wet hair. Clip up (long thin hairdresser style clips) to get height where you want it and cover with a net while it dries. Once dry a drop of serum or oil warmed up in your hands to scrunch out. Its not as heavy on the cast as some products and it's also hydrating. And cheap!

But really, you just have to keep trying. What works for one set of curls doesnt work for others! Infuriating AND expensive!

I feel the same now I go running. I can't co-wash when half the length of my hair ends up sweaty. The point of not using silicones is so you don't have to use sulfate shampoo to wash out the silicone buildup. I don't get any build-up because I have to use sulfate shampoo to feel clean.

As long as I use enough mousse or gel or both it doesn't make much difference to my hair's condition. It looks the same as when I had done the CG method for 6 months.

Ha, that made me laugh. Don’t get me started on bloody Colour Wow. For the money I paid I thought that stuff was going to change my whole life! Now I’ve just got another big bottle of overpriced shite sitting on my dresser.

I also have the overpriced silver bottle of uselessness. And some sort of shake to mix one from Colour Wow - equally useless.

I am ashamed by how much I have spent over the last few years trying to get my hair looking even half way decent. I have tried pretty much everything on this thread at one point or another.

I might do what someone else said and just go back to the Pantene of my youth!

Amandatelly · 01/08/2026 09:24

It’s been interesting seeing what works and doesn’t work for everyone.

I think the take home for me is that, as other posters mentioned, everyone is clearly wildly different in what works for them. And as far as I can tell, the only way to find out what works is to become very rich. 🤑

Hmmm in the short term this works but long term your doesnt absorb any moisture and it ruins the condition
After about 3 months of Pantene my hair was like straw

seanconneryseyebrow · 01/08/2026 10:01

Does everyone hate Colour Wow! Ive found it brilliant. But I use sparingly.

I haven't found Pantene ruins the condition - yet. Been about 6 months. But I do only wash once a week. Thats been a change. The water spray has become my friend. It really is my biggest styling tool tbh.

Garnier air dry curls

This is fabulous stuff.
I only realised I have wavy / curly hair in the last few years after having it really short for most of my life. So I didn't know what to do with curls but this stuff just does it!

PersephoneParlormaid · 02/08/2026 06:34

After trying lots of products I like Only Curls conditioner and Curl Crème. I put the crème in and leave it to dry naturally as drying my hair makes it frizz.
