The crap curly hair products have that don’t work.

Picture pending approval but basically Umberto Giannini and Aussie curry products I’ve tried are absolutely useless and make my hair feel horrible.
I run a lot and in this heat get very sweaty so need to wash my hair every run. I can’t be dealing with drying and straightening so need to find something that will keep my major frizz under control so I can wash and just let it dry.

Any suggestions other than these?

The umberto giannini curl jelly you posted is my go-to! Are you using enough? You have to use way more than you think, and then scrunch out the crunch...

Unfortunately curly hair is always going to be a bit frizzy. Diffusing helps. I find a hair gloss treatment helps also.

Amsylou · 30/07/2026 13:26

I think cantu does a good job, but can be very heavy. I also use the Aussie curly hair range, and their leave in conditioner and curl crème both work well. I find you need to change products every few months to help ‘reset’ the hair.

highlandponymummy · 30/07/2026 13:45

I like Innersense products. Yes they're expensive but really do last a very long time

Squidlette · 30/07/2026 13:48

A tip i got from a running group is to dry the roots of your hair after a run, rather than wash it each time. I tend to do that, then dry shampoo it. Game changer, because it doesn't get all flat and shitty.

Crojo · 30/07/2026 14:01

I am currently experimenting with products after deciding to embrace my waves. I agree the Umberto Gianni products aren’t great.
I get good results with gel and mousse after washing but it falls flat and horrible on day 2, I think it can too much if you have waves rather than curls.
So far I’ve found the best mousse is the V05 curl mousse, it’s very light and non crispy.
L’oreal dream lengths curl cream or Paw Paw 7 in one cream on wet hair have had good results too.
Not completely rinsing all the conditioner out of my hair helps with frizz too.

SingingGoldfinch · 30/07/2026 14:11

I discovered my natural waves about a year ago after a lifetime of straightening it - in that year I’ve tried all sorts and would say it really is trial and error in terms of what works for your hair. A few products that other people raved about did nothing for my hair at all. The best thing I’ve found so far is Tootilab - specifically the leave in conditioner styling gel - bit pricey but lasts an absolute age! I use it alongside umberto Gianni dream waves shampoo and conditioner and pretty content for now. It’s a pain but don’t give up - it really is worth a bit of trial and error to find your go to product!

Therescathairinmybath · 30/07/2026 14:31

My hair looked nice when I used the UG gel, but unfortunately I quickly became allergic to it. I can’t use any type of hair colour or most cosmetics due to allergies, so it’s very tricky for me to find the right products for curly hair. Curlsmith and Only Curls unscented ranges haven’t been too bad (so far!).

dick27 · 30/07/2026 15:12

Boots curl creme - 1.99 - lasts me about a year

CaptainDelphineAngua · 30/07/2026 15:22

3b/3c highlighted curly hair here. I use a pea sized chunk of leave in conditioner and very old skool wella shock waves ultra strong hold gel. 50p sized blob on mid length hair. Creates a great curl cast either air dried or gently dffused and cheap as chips. Can co wash again the next day after gum or run and sets even better on day 2 or 3. I shampoo every 4th day.

CraftyNavySeal · 30/07/2026 11:26

Mousse, the cheap aerosol ones in a can

I have wavy rather than curly though.

This looked nice but quite quickly dried out my hair to the point it destroyed it and I had to have it cut to a bob!

TheRealMagic · 30/07/2026 15:31

I really like the Only Curls intense hold gel, though I've found both the Umberto Jelly that you've posted and the Wave Hello are ok substitutes. For all three you need to add loads to properly soaking wet hair, scrunch then and then 'scrunch out the crunch' when dry.
The thing that's made the biggest difference to the frizziness of my hair is that I've started adding only a smidge of conditioner after shampooing, but then not washing it out. It saves me a lot of money in conditioner, too.

I do that sometimes. Did this morning actually, but I'm just just a sweaty person that my hair feels thick and dirty even after blasting with a dryer and it looks wirey and horrible.

Thanks so much for all the replies. There's a lot of suggestions for me to look into. I said curly, but it's a loose curl, rather than tight, wound curls. However it is quite thick and course, and I have a lot of it. But the frizz is out of control. As it dries (naturally) it just gets bigger and bigger and so frizzy you can barely see any definition in the curls.

I think my hair type just isn't suited to Aussie products. I've tried so many - for curly and styled straight hair - and it just either does nothing or feels horrible.

It's such a pain that most of these products don't come in trial sachets so you're forced to spend on a full size. If I'm in big Boots stores I always have a look at the trave sizes in case they have any but never found any.

I don't even need my hair to look perfect, I just want something that will help me not look Stig of the dump, even though I'm perfectly clean.

Going to do a bit of research on what's been suggested here and pick one or two things to try next.

I just want to add that I've been experimenting with my wavy hair, also after a lifetime of straightening, and I've found that it really matters how much product you use. I do a gentle towel blot after showering, just enough to stop water dripping down my back, then section my hair and thoroughly coat each section by raking the product through my hair with my fingers. Oh and I apply product right to the roots, regardless of the instructions. This makes a huge difference to frizz levels.

Once I'm done I give it a good scrunch then leave to dry naturally (I really need to get a diffuser for winter!). I then scrunch out the crunch but find that I need to be more brutal with it than most recommendations. I find it works best if I gently finger comb my hair until it's looking soft and voluminous rather than hard and crunchy. I can't guarantee it will work for curls but for my wavy/curly hair it works really well. I then add a bit of hairspray to hold the shape.

At night I scoop it all up into a high bun then cover it with a silk sleep bonnet. This inevitably falls off during the night but does help to keep frizz at bay. In the morning I resection my hair and thoroughly dampen it with a continuous mister, no need to add more product. I then rescrunch and I'm good to go. It generally looks better on the second day as the high bun helps give volume to my roots.

Curly hair is not straightforward and it's not a case of what works for one will work for someone else, for example, cantu really works on my hair.

I would start basic and cheap if I was you. I use the garnier argon oil conditioner. For example, it's always been great.I don't need an expensive conditioner. I also really like the aussie one, which is obviously more pricey.

For product I swear by boucleme in the yellow bottle. If I have a ridiculous amount of time, I will also use the purple gel.

But as I said just because these work for me doesn't mean they'll work for you. You need to work out if your hair likes moisture or needs moisture or protein as well and what curl type you have

NotSmallButFunSize · 30/07/2026 21:25

Sorry but I love the UG range! I use curl whip mousse and the original gel. I used to use the shampoo as well but I get the same results with a cheaper one and just Aldi basic conditioner.

Styling it soaking wet and creating a gel cast is the best way to keep definition as it dries - along with diffusing! Mine is absolutely crap if I air dry but really defined with a dryer and the cast then scrunched out.

ThatGreenFawn · 30/07/2026 21:27

I have tried.all of them and agree with you.
But...I have found something that works and makes my hair look amazing. Merwave.
I started by having tonise all of the products, 18 months on, I can use just the merwave cream and the foam, the the protein conditioner once a week ish.

Dani25 · 30/07/2026 21:42

Moroccan oil curl defining cream

330ml · 30/07/2026 21:52

I find Boots curl crème works for me. I have never bothered trying to straighten it.

Littleguggi · 30/07/2026 21:54

Kerastase curl manifest is what you need!

DonewhatIcando · 30/07/2026 21:57

@Amandatelly
Dp has curly hair, he uses Only Curls products, they work on his hair, it's a process though but there's tutorials.
Dp swears by their products and his hair always looks in good condition

FfsNotNow · 30/07/2026 21:58

Another vote for only curls here - the mousse and the gel both excellent for me

BeDandyDenimSloth · 30/07/2026 22:32

For frizz control I really rate this Curlsmith conditioner https://uk.curlsmith.com/products/frizz-control-duo-conditioner?variant=43215471575201&currency=GBP&utm_source=awin&sv1=affiliate&sv_campaign_id=259955&awc=29017_1785446469_9dcf9dab8b76deb4c249e0bb5ef81a2b.

Often I just use this as a leave in conditioner without additional stylers but also use another Curlsmith product sometimes their Hydro style flexi jelly as this is light in texture and doesn’t have the sticky feeling of so many gels. I’ve tried so many different products and never got on with any of the Umberto Giannini products as they dried my hair too much. Curlsmith are more expensive but I find I need much less of their products so it offsets the additional cost to some extent

FredaMountfitchet · 30/07/2026 22:47

I agree Boots pink curl cream .
Used to love Aveda be Curly but recently changed formulation and doesn’t work for me
Aussie curl cream is good
Tried Only Curls and found it heavy and had to wash my hair on second day . I will persevere but a bit hard sell too.
Next try will be Curlsmith
Sometimes though it’s just curly hair ….. you can do exactly the same routine products etc but get different results .

cherubina · 30/07/2026 23:23

Moroccanoil curl defining cream is pricey but lasts for ages. It is the best I’ve tried at defining curls without them being crunchy or separating back to frizz after a couple of hours. Also smells lovely so people often compliment me on that.

Gealach · 30/07/2026 23:34

I think it really depends on the curl. Cantu weightless shampoo, conditioner and curl cream is working really well. Other cantu products are too heavy.
