Do bright coloured bio nails look cheap ?

Darksquirrel90 · 28/07/2026 09:35

I currently have a bright pink on. I think it could look cheap.

Is French more polished/elegant?
Does a French look summery ?
Would you pick a French for a summer holiday ?

All depends on the length/shape of the nail, short look way nicer than long IMO and I dislike squared off tips or sharp points.

Short and square definitely better, or just natural shape.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 28/07/2026 15:19

Ah is this for finger nails. French looks nice but I like French manicure with eg red tip. Neon can look nice or tacky. Natural shape. Mine are currently bare.

Marmaladeisorange · 28/07/2026 15:26

Anything neon looks cheap to me, although used to have neon myself around 10 years ago!

TheChosenTwo · 28/07/2026 15:27

I love bright nails, always like a neon on my toes for the summer, looks so cheerful with flip flops on.
I don’t match my fingers but like them in bright colours too, pastel colours don’t suit me. And I think French can look a bit dated and corporate but it’s classic so depends on your overall look.
Primarily though I just like having cheerful nails, I do my own and don’t have extensions or acrylics or anything and don’t have them filed into a trendy shape! I do have a gel
pedicure for holidays though.

I had a gorgeous manicure (not gel) years ago at a beauty salon in Bath with an Essie polish. Not seen that shade since. Sort of a light rose cherry pink. Was for DB’s wedding as I was a bridesmaid.

I bet you'll find it here. Best shade selector I've ever seen!

@MeetMeOnTheCornercorrecting spelling breaks the rules

Culpeper · 28/07/2026 16:03

I think bright pink fingernails are always tacky, and I hate the look of gel nails as they are so fake looking.

So pink, fake gels and <shudder> pointy, would be a full house for me.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 28/07/2026 16:17

@chemmie Really? I’ve seen it repeatedly. First time around I didn’t even mention the word. The poster was far more rude about people’s nails and was fair game! I just made a joke about naff spelling which echoed the naff nails comment. How bizarre one is ok but the other is not when the same word is used. Anyway - love my barely there pink nails right now.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 28/07/2026 16:27

I’ve booked a manicure for this week and I think I’m going for French manicure with red tips. Tacky or no? I’ve seen it on another woman, looked good.

chemmie · 28/07/2026 16:34

@MeetMeOnTheCornernot everyone reports it but it does break the rules.

I think French manicure looks cheap, oldfashioned and artificial, but at this time of year, a bright pink (depending on the exact shade) can look really elegant, fun and young.

I think the general rule is that reds, pinks and nudes are all elegant colours to wear.

Arlanymor · 28/07/2026 17:44

I bought this in Boots today because my advantage card points were burning a hole in my pocket and it's fantastic, can't stop looking at it and I'm not usually a pinky person! Pun intended!

MickyMoonshine · 28/07/2026 17:53

Wear whatever colour you fancy. I love having bright nails and couldn’t care less what other people think about them.

EmeraldDreams73 · 28/07/2026 17:56

I have short nails (pianist) and had them done yesterday for the first time in years as we're going away (for the first time in many years). Coral on fingers and brighter coral pink on toes. I love them. I'm olive skinned, will tan v deeply once in the sun and I think my nails will look great against my largely black, white and neutral linen clothes Grin

Livpool · 28/07/2026 18:05

I love bright nails and wear a lot of neon. I think it looks lovely! And o don’t just wear red or orange. Neon green and yellow.

I think that sounds lovely

I’m currently sporting highlighter pink and orange nails with matching pink toes, could not give a stuff what anyone else thinks !

FallenNight · 29/07/2026 15:13

Reading this yesterday...made me buy the Barry M colour change paints today. Myself and DD now have shimmery white nails indoors, and pink ones when we go out in the sun. Love it.

principalskinna · 29/07/2026 15:24

I've had a kind of milkshake chrome on my fingers. Looks epic

LOL.

No.

Yes. I promise.

painted nails always look cheap, including French manicured

Christ alive, Mumsnet can be so joyless at times.

WildLeader · 29/07/2026 16:18

I’ve got bright pink atm. Kirsty Meakin Savage.

shortish nails and they look fab. They won’t look cheap unless the REST of you looks cheap! It’s summer, it’s 30-stupid-odd degrees outside, when else can you have bright nails?

fwiw, I’m going for apricot/coral or peachy French on Friday, and the toes will be solid whatever colour I go for

white French is basic, I had chrome French for my wedding last month they were so pretty, but I mostly wear a stronger colour anyway
