Box dye help

Ive used box dyes for years - Loreal excellence 7dark blonde. My hair is in a rubbish condition and I think this is due to dying it every 4 weeks to cover greys and the heat I put on it. I have invested in some straighteners which I can adjust the heat and also making sure I use a heat protector spray.

my colour goes orange quickly. Are some box dyes better than others? Is the Josh Wood one better for hair? It seems so expensive! Any suggestions?

Straighteners can eventually with regular use be a bit harsh but with a bit of patience and technique its possible to get the same result with a hair dryer. What shampoo and conditioner do you use?

A range. I’ve been using the pink loreal one that is meant to be sulphate free. Any suggestions that aren’t too expensive?

I use Josh Wood hair dye and also straighteners fairly often. My hairdresser says my hair is in good condition so maybe it does help. I do like the colour.

Do you tone it between dying? You could maybe use some ashy toner or a mask / semi permanent colour to reduce the orange. I like shrine ash drops / gloss. It won't really cover grey though. When you dye your hair every 4 weeks are you just doing the roots or covering all of it? The L'Oréal dye is peroxide based so can damage over time.

I use Josh Wood and have the extra oil you mix in. I think it's loads better than other brands I used in the past, it doesn't dry my hair out.

I’ve only just started just doing the roots. @VerityUnreasonbledo I only just do the roots or do I pull it through for the last 5 minutes?

What colour are you dying your hair? If it's brunette then the orange/ brassiness just seems to be unavoidable for some people. I had the same thing and I ended up giving up and going blonde (and I get it done at the hairdresser now).

They just said some people just have a hair type where that's what the colour does, basically, and you can lessen it a little bit but can't really stop it.

Tried all the toners and drops and blue shampoos, they don't work.

Blonde seems to be the only way I can have a cooler tone, unless I go for very dark brown, which doesn't suit me.

Sorry I just saw it's a dark blonde, but depends if it's more blonde or brunette (I tried some dark blondes that were basically brunette really).

I had to go for a slightly lighter blonde, not bleached but definitely lighter than my natural colour. I just get highlights which cover the greys pretty well, but I only have a few greys currently.
