Kids shampoo vs regular

Irishdmum · 17/07/2026 20:00

A bit of a random question,
I just wonder at what age other parents transition their kids shampoo from kids to regular?

I dont remember having "kids" shampoo when I was young but I worry about the vast selection we have now & chemicals. Don't want to damage her hair.

Literally everything in the world has "chemicals".

You need to do some research and decide what it is that you want to avoid and why.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 18/07/2026 09:59

Well, when I was young it was Johnson’s No More Tears then about 10/11 it was Green apple shampoo.

Irishdmum · 19/07/2026 21:18

That is very true, i suppose I dont know what I want to avoid i just didnt want to be using harsh shampoos for her young hair.

And Vosene!

The smell of vosene and imperial leather instantly takes me back to sharing baths with my brother when I was little.

Vosene is not gentle btw.

We're having to cut costs significantly so I suspect Alberto Balsam will be finding it's way back into my bathroom. I actually remember it being ok although I've no idea on ingrediants.

What do you mean no chemicals?

Water is a chemical.

If you’re wanting to use a step up from kids shampoos with no nasties why not look at Jason or Faith in Nature? They do lots of fragrances suitable for all types of hair. Childs farm, weleda, green people, little soap company eco warrior are also good.

If you’re after eco friendly and budget soap Gruum do an offcuts soap packet which I bought for DB and SIL and their kids recently.

I came here to see if there was an answer to your question but you’ve reminded me of Alberto Balsam! As a child after swimming lessons, I would steal squeezes of this shampoo from someone in the class after me! It smelt soooo good!

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 20/07/2026 09:22

My mum who was fairly eco friendly just used Pears soap, Johnson’s baby powder, Matey bubble bath. I don’t think it was Alberto Balsam but was some 80s brand Apple shampoo. Then when I got to 15/16 and got a perm I bought my own shampoo and conditioner but I liked the Vidal Sassoon range which smelled of almonds.

They have loads of kids shampoos, we use johnsons kids shampoo and johnsons kids leave in conditioner for our 2 year old and our 11 year old.

Yes but they’ve got chemicals in them.

Whenever you want really. I've used baby shampoo on my own hair in the past as I found it very good and left my hair really soft.

One thing is children's shampoo is much gentler on the eyes. I was reminded of this last time we went on holiday and forgot to bring the children's shampoo and so washed the kids' hair with normal shampoo, and they were crying when it got in their eyes. So I won't be using adult shampoo on them again until at least they are old enough to reliably hold their head back and stop wriggling around when rinsing their hair.

@Irishdmum the Yuka app will really help with identifying the chemicals you don’t want in your kids shampoo.

SparkyBlue · 20/07/2026 09:51

We use moogoo and it’s great

Thank you, i do have the Yukka App however everything is put into it is never great. So I dont tend to use it much now. I only learnt recently that it works for food too!

Yep you do have to try hard to find the exceptions, but they exist!

BeUniqueDreamer · 20/07/2026 11:35

We use vosene, and use the spray after too. None of my kids have ever had lice despite them going round like crazy on multiple occasions.
I intend to have my children use it until they’re teens!

I love their leave in conditioner. It lasts forever too.

I remember Timotei as a first adult shampoo.

Yes but they’ve got chemicals in them.

Water is a chemical.
Air is a chemical.

The only thing with no chemicals in it is a vacuum.

Maybe you need to be clearer what chemicals you mean.
