From buying a denim mini skirt .

For context, I’m 47, size 10, ok legs although deathly white. Would only wear it on holiday, not with a skimpy top.

has the ship sailed?

I think a (fake) tan is necessary

Summer will be back next year.

The point still stands.

OP only intends to wear it on holiday, when she’s fake tanned.

flossiepie · 17/07/2026 17:53

I’m just wearing it on holiday, my legs have childhood scars and I feel better with a light tan as it hides them.

This is mine, I'm only 5'1 so it's longer on me

NewGoldFox · 17/07/2026 18:08

What is putting you off from wearing it?

I realise some people will think you can wear anything. And yes, you can.
But are you acknowledging sometimes even though you can do something, it doesn’t mean you should. By asking ?
Even if you have good legs a denim mini skirt on a woman nearly 50 might look a bit tacky. As someone else has said denim shorts yes, mini, no.
As you age there are some things you can carry off and some things you cannot.
Which is why the phrase mutton dressed as lamb came about. Older women dressing as if they are 22 or younger.
There are other clothes I suspect that would look so much better. So it is a no from me.
But yes, you can wear it if you wish.

Bananajam · 18/07/2026 17:56

Ha! Tacky? Wow! And mutton dressed as lamb too. You've early got a lot of opinions on what age we should stop wearing certain types of clothing!

Go for it OP, no age label in the back of clothes only opinions of people you'll never meet so don't matter. Plus, you could wear tights in winter, no tan required..

Wear would you buy such a thing? I don’t think I’ve seen a denim mini since the 80s and school discos.

Literally any high street store.

Floisme · 19/07/2026 08:13

The phrase mutton dressed as lamb came about because there are people who think it's appropriate to compare women - old and young - to pieces of meat. Some of them even post on Style and Beauty although why anyone would take advice from them is a bit of a mystery to me.

It’s an awful phrase

I’m sixty and wear one.

It comes to about an inch or two above my knees and is A line, not tight. I am size 6/8 and fake tan throughout summer unless I have a real tan.

GreenLemonade · 19/07/2026 08:43

Go for it, OP. I’m sure you’ll look great!

We really need to move away from the idea that women shouldn’t wear certain clothes after reaching a certain age. Nobody would tell a man he can’t wear something just because he’s 40, 60, or any other age.

Gingybread · 19/07/2026 08:45

Im 46 and wear mini skirts including a denim one all winter with knee high boots and tights. In summer I wear mini skirts with what ever top I like. I love them and enjoy them however I wish. Get the skirt

travailtotravel · 19/07/2026 08:47

53 size 14. I wear mine all the time ... in winter with tights, summer with my pasty legs and wobbly thighs. Classic wardrobe piece.

likelysuspect · 19/07/2026 08:51

You;ll be able to wear it in the cooler weather with dark navy thicker tights, chunky DMs, that sort of thing.

Gingybread · 19/07/2026 08:53

I think it’s a bit off to be policing woman over 40s clothes when it would be considered wrong to police skimpy clothes on young woman. Either we support woman bodies dressed in any way or we don’t. A skimpy outfit on a young woman is supported and we are told to just not look if it offends us,it’s said all the time in mumsnet a young woman should not be made to feel ashamed. Why is the same outfit on a woman over 40 suddenly shameful?

RosemaryMintSageThyme · 19/07/2026 08:56

I bought a light summery one from Dorothy Perkins when I was 20. I still wear it on summer hols and am 52 now. I have a thicker one bought from Boden in 2006 and wear that in that winter. Both darker navy. Just buy it!

Doggymummar · 19/07/2026 08:57

l think wear what you want but short starts are so annoying I always wary about showing my knickers

MinnieCoops · 19/07/2026 08:58

I’m older and wear mine all the time. Love it.

OreganoandFeta · 19/07/2026 09:09

Absolutely fine if you feel comfortable wearing it. I have a mini denim skirt I wear with leggings or tights in colder weather and wouldn't occur to me to be too old. I think with these things it's about wearing clothes that suit your body shape, comfort level and lifestyle. I do a sport that means I have toned legs though, which helps!

I dont think skimpy clothes are ok on young women. A denim mini skirt is not a skimpy item

Skimpy items on young women are not supported, but a vocal minority online, particularly on forums like this encourage people to engage with massive group think about things like that which makes it sound like you describe. I dont know any parents who let their teens out looking inappropriately dressed/skimpily dressed. You wouldnt know that from this forum though.

Its not from a perspective of the onlooker being 'offfended' either its about basic standards of presentation.

FallenNight · 23/07/2026 14:28

I'm mid 40s and would cheerfully wear one. Not got a blue one at the moment but wear this on holiday all the time.
