Black dress with a pop of colour for a funeral?

musicalmrs · 15/07/2026 21:22

Hi folks,

My mum passed away a couple of weeks ago, and I'm looking for the right outfit for her funeral. The dress code is whatever makes you comfortable - black or colour - as my mum would have loved both. I'd love to find something that has a lot of black but also a hit of colour - ideally a dress, though I may have to go for a skirt/top combo.

Shirt dresses and fit and flare type things tend to suit me - things that flow out from the waist. So far this is my favourite, but I'm not a huge fan of the pattern close up - but I love the blast of colour! Has anyone got any wonderful suggestions? Thanks!

Desigual are usually good for black with an interesting bit of colour. Possible too casual but you may find something you like.

You could choose a colourful shirt dress and wear a black vest under it and a black belt and shoes?

Sorry was on a shopping roll

I often use Next for the same thing - but didn't find all of these hits! Particularly like the Religion ones, which isn't a brand I'm hugely familiar with (but have seen referenced on these Style threads a lot). Thanks!

Yes the Religion ones are a little more cost but very elegant - sorry for your loss

I saw this thread yesterday and started looking for you then got distracted.

First off, I am sorry for your loss. And I agree you shouldn't get a cheap polyester dress.

My view is you should get something fabulous designer, and if your budget doesn't stretch you should buy vintage. Have you heard of Vestaire? It's a website to sell second hand designer clothes, they authenticate the items and check them over to make sure they are all in good nick. In my experience it's 99% rich ladies who have never worn the item or worn it once that sell through them. I have had total bargains from there.

I think what would be lovely is a Diane von Furstenberg dress. You'll feel wonderful in it, the cuts align with what you say suits you, can wear it again and you can get one for under £100. Black with a pop of color is a very DVF look so a lot of the dresses fit that brief

What a beautiful suggestion x

Hi OP. Just read your thread, I have nothing to contribute sadly as I’ve not shopped much recently but couldn’t pass by without saying that I’m very sorry for your loss and hope your mothers send off is as beautiful as the effort you’re making to look lovely for her.

I absolutely love this one! I'm just not entirely convinced by the sleeves (but I'm going to think on it, as I love the rest of it!).

Losing track of who posted what, but thank you so much for some lovely suggestions! I've got lots of the last suggestions sitting in tabs to mull over.

@MyKindHiker I must admit I know very little about vintage fashion etc, but those Diane von Furstenberg dresses are gorgeous. Sadly none in my size that are quite right, but I'll definitely keep note of that designer for future dresses!

Actually the dress you linked to is beautiful

I agree. The dress is beautiful and rocks both boxes. I'm sorry for your loss OP.

ShanghaiDiva · 16/07/2026 20:39

Sorry for your loss.
I also wanted colour for my dm’s funeral and wore black and grey with a bright fuchsia silk scarf I bought years ago from Shanghai tang. My dm loved the scarf so it seemed fitting.

I agree it’s the most lovely of the suggestions and with the brand you know will be well cut and nice fabric.

if you don’t like the weird sleeves it’ll be like an hour’s work for a local dressmaker to remove the ruffly bits. Just ask your local dry cleaner they usually have a contact that does alterations

sending love x

I'm so sorry for your loss, @musicalmrs .

PP have found some lovely options for you, but this one is stunning! And I love the detail on the sleeves. It's really beautiful.

I'm so sorry for your loss OP. I really like the dress you linked to.

Sugarhill Brighton are also very good for black with a pop of colour, might be worth a look?

momager22 · 17/07/2026 11:51

Sorry for your loss op.
I’d be minded to wear a plain black dress with bright shoes and scarf or necklace.

I saw this today and thought of you (read your thread when you posted but hadn’t seen anything at the time).

It’s cupra and viscose - I had to look up what cupra is, which made me more interested, but unfortunately it doesn’t have a back so not for me (need a bra) but if you don’t or are happy to wear a cardigan with it, it might suit your needs?

Sorry, I just remembered you said it needs sleeves, so would definitely only work
with a cardigan!

What was her favourite colour? I wore a pale blue scarf with a back dress for my mother in laws funeral because baby blue was her favouriet colour.

Maybe the black and white dress with a dark purple or pink coloured jacket for the pop of colour.

For my mum;s funeral I wore a dark blouse and a coral and dark scarf (because she always liked coral colorued lipstick!) and whenever I wore it afterwards I thought of her.
