Help - can anyone recommend some products for how I can smell nice?

I always notice and think 'that's nice' when (usually) young women walk past me smelling of things like cocoa butter, coconut, fruity type smells, or else that kind of incense smell that smells like a hippy shop. I'm nearly 40 though so probably can't do the same options as them!

I don't like traditional perfume smells and they generally smell so alcoholic to me. I've got an old perfume which I think is maybe Dior? But it smells all wrong to me now.

I've just started in an office and become aware that everyone else smells lovely! And because I'm cycling in (and showering at the office) I'd like to be extra confident that I smell nice...

Don’t like coconut or vanilla but like a lot of Molton Brown products. I’m a fan of Aqua Di Parma too. Almost everything is good.

This perfume by Merit smells really lovely. It just smells clean and fresh, not overwhelming or alcoholic at all. I’m forever getting comfortable on it and when I wore it to a hospital appointment the other day I had to show the receptionist what it was on my phone because she liked it that much.

If you like the hippy smells then Karma perfume by Lush may be your thing. It's an orange and patchouli blend - quite powerful initially, but mellows to be really warm and not overpowering at all as long as you are sparing with it! They also do a soap in the same scent so you can layer it up a bit.

Products like Kopari and Sol de Janerio. Post sprays are what they are wearing.

for a more grown up approach Laura Mercier body soufflé

sleepstories · 14/07/2026 22:33

there is SO much to pick from!
I would say go to Sephora and start sniffing - Saltair does great body washes and lotions, space NK own brand also and Sol de Janeiro
same with perfumes, you might like something like glossier or Phlur

PussyGaylore · 15/07/2026 08:29

Kuumba made stuff is lovely and made from natural ingredients. I particularly like their Egyptian Musk.

CatInTheRhombus · 15/07/2026 08:41

Sol de janeiro is the only brand I’ve ever found where the smell lingers all day on me. Everything else is gone by the time I’ve got to work.

I use the pump body lotion and it stays as a light pleasant scent you’d only notice up close rather than anything highly noticeable or potentially annoying like perfume.

Another vote for the Sol de Janeiro range, my son’s girlfriend always smells lovely and that’s what she uses. Her favourite is the pink one (no idea of the number!)

Personally I find fragrant hair stuff works well. I haven’t got it to hand, but I use a hair serum that smells gorgeous!

JacknDiane · 15/07/2026 09:08

Sol de Janeiro definitely for the younger ones.
A quick spray if Clarins Eau Dynamisante and you'll smell like you just walked out of a spa.

Sparkletastic · 15/07/2026 09:14

Nice is in the nose of the beholder. I’d agree with Glossier You and the Clarins range but caution against Sol de Janeiro, Saltair, Phlur etc. You need to pin down whether you want something that projects or more of a skin scent. Armani She is a very pleasant white musky unchallenging scent, but if you prefer something very fresh and citrus perhaps try Neroli Portofino by Tom Ford or Ô de Lancôme for something much more affordable. If you want to try a few different things the M&S range is cheap as chips and most are very pleasant.

Thankyou all so much - I'm going to go and start sniffing...! Hoping there should be something in this list that suits me 😊

My mum is 75 and uses the Sol de janeiro bum bum cream just because she loves the smell 🤣

Lentilcakes · 15/07/2026 11:11

My DD uses Glossier - I love the smell!

Vinvertebrate · 15/07/2026 11:13

Have fallen in love with Norfolk Natural Living for fresh, natural scents and the best damn hand cream I’ve used in 40-odd years. It’s all essential oils based and smells heavenly.

Pinkgin00 · 15/07/2026 11:18

Sol de Janeiro cheirosa hair and body perfume mist. They smell devine without being too heavy. I use them daily, scent 62 is my favourite, especially for holidays. You can also buy the little jet pack sets that have a matching body shower and moisturising cream.

Felinesonmeshirt · 15/07/2026 11:24

Sanctuary Spa products. Best smell in the world oh and Dolce and Gabbana Light Blue x

Girlintheframe · 15/07/2026 11:24

I just bought the new Sol de Janerio Cheirosa 91 body spray and have had lots of compliments when I wear it.
Was at the airport recently and a women sat down next to us, she smelt incredible. Had to ask her what it was it was so nice, turns out she was wearing Jo Malone nectarine blossom and honey

Ihateboris · 15/07/2026 11:45

I wear Sol De Janeiro body lotion and always receive lots of compliments. It smells gorgeous and is a great body lotion 😍

PocketSand · 15/07/2026 17:09

Biotherm anti drying body milk has a light citrus smell and feels hydrating with a light sheen. Although the only person to comment on the beautiful smell was DC2 when he had a cuddle before bed - he’s now 20 and 6 foot 2 but I still use it!

Sorry but, if you walked past me smelling of fruit or coconut scented toiletries I wouldn't be thinking how nice you smelled.

I really, really dislike toiletries smelling of food items. I much prefer clean smelling scents or floral scents.

I got Sol de Janeiro in my advent calendar. Not something I’d buy as I tend to think it’s for teenagers. But I’m surprised at how nice it is. I took it on holiday to wear during the day, and often would get asked what it was.

Crikeyalmighty · 15/07/2026 20:11

I like Victoria secret sprays - I’ve got loads that I buy at airports -
