Useful fashion fixes like hijab magnets for gaping necklines

pontipinemum · 06/07/2026 10:23

I recently bought some hijab magnets to stop the crossover neckline of a dress from gaping and showing my bra, and they’re brilliant!

They’re incredibly strong and don’t leave any pin marks.

Has anyone found any similar fashion fixes they’d recommend?

Nothing as good as that, but I've just started wearing crop top style bras after years and years of uncomfortable under-wired ones. They really smooth me out and I don't have the back-fat bulges anymore under tighter clothing

HushTheNoise · 06/07/2026 10:35

Honestly I found moving away from underwired bras made me less grumpy! Game changer.

pontipinemum · 06/07/2026 10:42

@Idontjetwashthefucker @HushTheNoise do you find you get good support with those? After 2 babies and a few years of breastfeeding the boobs are not where they once were! I am a 34H

I think many people know the one with the bangle and the hair tie?

If a dropped waist dress or a long t-shirt is making your tummy look big, pull some materiel from the inside over a bangle and secure it with the hair tie (so the knot is on the side closest to your skin). It gives the garment and your waist some definition.

Have a look at Sally Jacks on Insta who explains all of this stuff!

Also, the proportion of many outfits can be improved by the addition of shoulder pads. You can buy ones that just stick to your shoulder from Amazon.

Shirt cuff bands can also be found on Amazon and are useful if you pull your sleeves up all of the time.

@Applesdoremusings97 I had seen the bangle thing but she explains it really well. She seems to have some other great tips too.

Oh I am constantly pulling my sleeves up I'll have a look thanks

Yes definitely, the ones I have have stitching around the 'cups' and have removable padding...work brilliantly with and without. These are ones I've bought, I don't do sports just every day wear

May I ask which ones you have found that are as supportive as an underwires bra? I’ve quite a large bust so support is really important. If it’s not too personal what (rough) size are you? I understand if you’d prefer to not answer, but I am so over underwires but the odd ones I’ve tried tend to not be as supportive and all seem to be manmade fibres mostly, I guess partly due to the suport/stretch that’s needed.

I’d never heard of these before - I’m short and my arms are therefore also short, so sleeves are sometimes too long, but I do prefer to pull sleeves up anyway. I’ve had a quick look on Amazon to see what they are and looked at a couple. But can I ask are they better than just using a hairband, and can they work (somehow) if you don’t want them on show on the outside so want to try and use them underneath the outer part of material at all? If that makes sense? I’ve used hair bands in a similar way and am actually currently using thin silk scrunchies on my sleeves atm, but it’s just on a thin dressing gown so not done neatly at all and the scrunchy is on the inside.

Sorry, I’ve just seen your answer above mine about which ones they are. I think I’ve looked at those before, but does the bottom band ride up? The ones I’ve tried always ride up. If you’re bigger of breast it would be really handy to know how they wear, thank you.
eta: how is the sizing on them?

I've got the metal springy ones and use them with jumpers in winter but the jumpers need to have a decent size cuff to turn over them, so I've got the smaller size bands that are then snug halfway between wrist and elbow. I've tried them with a jumper with a small cuff and baggier sleeves and they just don't work without showing.

Hi, I was large of nork but have lost a lot of weight over the last 2 years, my bra size is now 34c or thereabouts...I get the small size.

Sewing a ‘strap trap’ into the shoulders of sleeveless dresses. Stops bra straps from showing.

Thank you for your reply. It was the metal springy ones that came up on Amazon that I looked at. Useful info about the size of cuffs, thank you.

Thank you. Looking at the sizing chart with the rough size of my currently large norks it looks like I’d have to get the 2/3xl, which seems really rather massive! Are they very stretchy, so would be tighter in the area below boob but stretchier over the boobs? And - although you are now smaller, so perhaps you might not have the same problem - do they create a bit of a shelf?

I will look into these hijab magnets.

Maybe a bit peculiar for some, but I recently realised that I could wear two bras! I had a bra that was the right shape but the wrong colour and a thin one that was the right colour, so I just popped it on top and the result was perfect.

palron · 06/07/2026 12:29

I use wundaweb or equivalent all the time for hemming.

I have these buttons that have a pin in them and a separate back. So handy for gaping necklines, gathering a wide t shirt to the side and many other uses that I'd never thought of.

I for 6 in different colours. This dress would gap along the v otherwise.

Is it not uncomfortable to wear two bras?

This is a bit of an odd one. I have a third nipple (for feeding imps according to folklore) that sits directly on my bra band line and it is extremely uncomfortable.
I dont want it removed. Its part of me so I pad it with memory foam insole material. Works a treat. I ghess this would also work for scarring and large moles.

CointreauVersial · 06/07/2026 14:36

I have one of those quick-stitch devices that puts in a tiny plastic tag/stitch temporarily. Great for a neckline that's a bit low, or to hold up trouser turn-ups.

I also use those stretchy sleeve garters to keep flappy sleeves rolled. My pair came from my grandfather's house - he was born in 1894, so I reckon they are museum pieces!

pontipinemum · 06/07/2026 14:56

@Gettingbysomehow wow that is genuinely really interesting. I might use the insole trick soon, I am having auxiliary breast tissue removed and bras will be uncomfortable for a while I would imagine.

@Yetone I get it now, thanks

@CointreauVersial I got one of those, I LOVE it. So handy. My DS has narrow hips so I use that to take in his p.j's or to get me by until I put in elastic and buttons. On a lot of dresses I find the shoulders too big so I pull it down my back and place a few tags on the waist hem line.

Avidly taking notes!

Hijab magnets sound the answer to my prayers. I've been painstakingly (and poorly) sewing poppers to v-neck clothing, but they're incredibly fiddly and time-consuming to sew and look rubbish when done...

Isometimeswonder · 06/07/2026 15:55

Shirt cuff things or looser scrunchies are also good for turning wide leg trousers into cuffed. Works better with a thinner material.
(I did this for a flight, stops trousers puddling in unknown disgustingness in the loo!)
