Useful fashion fixes like hijab magnets for gaping necklines

I recently bought some hijab magnets to stop the crossover neckline of a dress from gaping and showing my bra, and they’re brilliant!

They’re incredibly strong and don’t leave any pin marks.

Has anyone found any similar fashion fixes they’d recommend?

How small are the magnets? Are they a worry with young children?

Ooh hijab magnets? I've got a dress with a wide square open neckline and puffy short sleeves, the shoulders of which constantly slip down revealing bra straps. I've tried using safety pins to attach the dress to the bra straps but it's very fiddly, sounds like hijab magnets could work if they're not too big. Could they be attached in a way that wouldn't be really obvious on the shoulders of the dress do you think?

Wouldn't the "strap traps" linked on p1 of this thread be good for this?

threescoops · 06/07/2026 20:01

Yes thank you I've now seen that post too, requires some sewing, but looks to be an answer. Still wondering if the magnetic clips could be a lazier, if visible, solution

I use these Velcro dots to stick together gaping necklines. They are great and stick really well. They can also be used around the hem of long trousers to temporarily make them shorter.

Yes the magnets are a danger to children. They are very attractive looking so definitely need to keep them away from children

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 06/07/2026 22:20

The magnets also work very well to “tuck” a t-shirt that’s slightly too long (or any other top) without having the bulk of it inside your trousers or skirt.

Hi, I was large of nork but have lost a lot of weight over the last 2 years, my bra size is now 34c or thereabouts...I get the small size.

I'd love these as I only have Boody ones which are very expensive and stretch out of shape so get loose and lack support after a few hours.

Amazon suggests size M for me. But I'm 32D, so wondering if size S would be better as 32D and 34C are pretty close. Is there a lot of stretch?

abathofmilkwithladydi · 06/07/2026 22:36

@Garybarlowtopfanummm. What?

Shirt cuff things or looser scrunchies are also good for turning wide leg trousers into cuffed. Works better with a thinner material.
(I did this for a flight, stops trousers puddling in unknown disgustingness in the loo!)

This is genius

CluelessAboutBiology · 06/07/2026 22:53

Less effort than sewing strap traps are these - they just attach with a safety pin.

@Yetone yes def need to be kept away from young children. I have a metal earring stand that I stick them too when I take them off.

@TressiliansStone super handy and you can move them/ remove if you change shape and no rips/ holes

@threescoops I'm not sure they would work. I posted a pic of the one I was using today I think you'd see it. Are the shoulder too big? Can you use the safety pin to tighten up the back/ shoulders?

On a top like this the yellow arrows are pointing towards the magnets, I think you would see them but not too big.

Black arrows point to where I would put in the safety pins. Fold over the material to hide the pin and put the closing under the top. Taking it in by an inch here will hopefully get rid of the baggy/ falling issue

I have one of those quick-stitch devices that puts in a tiny plastic tag/stitch temporarily. Great for a neckline that's a bit low, or to hold up trouser turn-ups.

I also use those stretchy sleeve garters to keep flappy sleeves rolled. My pair came from my grandfather's house - he was born in 1894, so I reckon they are museum pieces!

Is this the type of Quick Stitch thing that you use?

And please could someone explain the hairband/hairtie thing for shortening trousers? I can't work it out.

Thank you for all these useful tips - I've ordered some hijab magnets, genius idea! You've saved me from having to wear vests/camisoles under all my dresses!

It isn't a permanent soloution but it is very handy. And to be fair on my sons pjs they have lasted a good while.

I use a hair bobble to extend my jeans and trousers whenever I’m bloated or gained weight and don’t want to buy a bigger size up. One end through the button hole, the other then wraps around the button to secure

Divebar2021 · 07/07/2026 06:55

If you’ve lost weight then these push through buttons are useful. These ones are plain but they have embossed ones that look like traditional jeans buttons. In addition to waistbands I’ve used them on blazers to introduce a more nipped in asymmetric waistline.

( I’ve lost a fair amount of weight but because I’ve still got broad shoulders I’m still able to wear my older blazers with the help of these. I don’t look swamped )

Great thread.
I have ordered some hijab magnets (no small kids here)
I have a lot of dresses which are low and you can see my bra.
Thx

@Idontjetwashthefucker @HushTheNoise do you find you get good support with those? After 2 babies and a few years of breastfeeding the boobs are not where they once were! I am a 34H

Im a similar size and Freya Undetected are brilliant. Theyre underwired but really comfortable but with good support as well. Pretty much every other bra I own the wires end up digging in.

I think the crop tops are only good if you have small breasts. They dont give any shape or lift so can make you look a bit flattened or frumpy. I suppose theyre OK round the house but i couldn't wear them out with a top or dress. Im a 32FF.

Applesdoremusings97 · 07/07/2026 07:29

One for children’s clothes…

You can buy elastic which has button holes all down its length. You can then sew a button to the back of a coat collar for example and a button to a scarf say, and the two are forever connected until you unbutton them.

It works for gloves and hats too! A child can take off their coat at nursery school in winter and the scarf, hat and gloves remain attached.

That is so clever! I have that elastic. I have to put it into a lot of my sons trousers so they don't fall down.

I am absolutely doing that with scarves in winter this year
