How to brush the matted bit?

I have long thick hair, and there's a bit at the back, in the middle where my hair meets my neck, where it gets really matted because I can't quite reach when I brush. I could do it upside down but then the rest goes haywire if I do that. Is there a magic solution or product? Tell me it's not just me...

Buy a tangle teezer. Gently start from the bottom of the tangle and work your way higher towards your roots. And then try leave in conditioner or detangler in your hair to keep it tangle free. DD wakes up with a big tangle every day at the back of her hair and this is how we stay on it.

Have you tried detangling sprays? They are mainly made for kids but lots of options on Amazon

I have very thick hair that often gets matted there underneath. I sit there watching someone on my laptop and slowly tease any knots I find apart with my fingers. The trick is to pull out just a few strands from any knots at a time, and brush it through with a tangle teezer when you think you are done.

Brush conditioner through with a tangle teezer whenever you've washed hair, then rinse out as normal. I find it much easier to get to that bottom layer when it's wet.

Thank you all. Tangle Teezer for the win! I will give these suggestions a try. Never thought of conditioning sprays. Now I have hope that I don't have to just cut it out!

If you plait it each night before bed in a loose plait, then brush it each morning, i used ro aplit mine into two halves and brush each half seperately, it wont get too matted in the first place.

This.

In the shower split to two halves from your parting to nape of neck, as if doing pigtails. Brush it that way.

plait for night.

Really you should go for a cut and if the hairdresser is good they will undercut the nape.

Make sure you get the ‘thick and curly’ Tangle Teaser. The bristles are longer and stronger. The regular one doesn’t reach the bottom layer of my hair.

Oh good point, thank you. I'll look out for the right one

Thanks @Tofringeornot and @Geneticsbunny . I will give the overnight plait a go. I think night time is where it gets matted as I sleep mostly on my back

Definitely do your brushing in the shower, with loads of conditioner in. Pleat at night and quick brush throughout the day.

pastadish · 06/07/2026 22:57

I’m possibly being a bit dense here but why can’t you reach it? Tangle teezer is still brush and you’ll have to reach round to brush that bit.

louderthan · 06/07/2026 23:00

Have a small triangle undercut? It won’t show unless you have your hair up and can look really cool.

Edited

I used to be able to reach. I must have lost some shoulder flexibility or something

Ah, that's good to know. I always see the recommendations and all mine does is brush the top layer !

That's an interesting idea. I've just searched and found lots of very striking photos. I do wear my hair up most of the time though, and I'm not nearly cool enough to carry off these kinds of looks. It would solve the problem though!
