What do you think the female equivalent of this sort of dressing is...

At the DCs school a couple of the male teachers are gloriously snappy dressers. Lilac coloured tweed three piece suits; sage green tweed three piece suit; three piece pinstriped suit with handlebar moustache and hat etc. They look fabulous I think. Not old-school publuc-schoolesque, more with a definite European style mode. A bit like this young man here

There is also an older man in my village who wears very similar. Today was a deep purple three piece suit with fedora. Aside from wondering if he was uncomfortably hot, i wondered what the female equivalent is. It's something beyond 'fashion' or 'classic' and certainly not a vintage, studied 40s look (which I also love). But i can't put my finger on what an equivalent might be for women. Grateful for thoughts!

Might ‘feminine academia’ describe it? If you don’t want the full Katharine Hepburn vintage vibe (although, why wouldn’t you?!).

FeelingLessTired · 13/06/2026 17:29

aaaahhh... femine academia. Yes! Actually, I now realise I did have a half-formed image of katherine Hepburn... silk blouse with full sleeves and tight wasitcoat.

My first thought was the 1920s era, and women wearing suits.

A tangent but have you seen any of Zack Pinsent's videos? I like his thoughts on the psychology of dressing as he likes and helping other people too

A cape. A big, wool cape - probably vintage - with some sort of piping. And voluminous skirts. Highly polished brogues or loafers. And coloured tights.

Glorious!

OP, I wonder if you might like Diana Rigg's wardrobe in The Mrs Bradley Mysteries. Chic, quirky, colour, beautiful fabrics, sometimes androgynous.
