Hi .. special event in 3 weeks! My legs are so pale. What do you recommend?

On the subject of tans

the sun beds… there’s a new place literally just opened in the last couple of weeks in the village next to mine.

are sun beds as dangerous now as they were before in terms of cancer?

Why do you want to do something to ‘fix’ your skin colour. Do you think people with other skin colours should ‘fix’ theirs?

so weird

Like straightening our curly hair. Or curling our straight.

who gives a fuck when it makes US feel better in our own skins?

thinkfast · 12/06/2026 21:53

I love Bondi beach fake tan applied with one of their mitts. Use your two weeks to exfoliate and moisturise so your skin’s ready for it

Fake tan is less stylish than pale legs so 🤷‍♀️

Good fake tan looks absolutely realistic and does make a massive difference

this is style and beauty not sack cloth and ashes

breakingthebank · 12/06/2026 21:56

My skin is incredibly white and I have tried all sorts of fake tans. Even the gradual tanners were the wrong shade for me and made my legs look orange. I have now found Technocolor 1 hour express foam in Sapphire and its the perfect shade, just takes the extreme whiteness away without being obvious.

Many years ago I read that Danii Minogue used Mac Face and body when she was a judge so bought and it was great

i used my normal shade on my legs and arms too ( for a wedding and buffed it well so didn’t come off on clothes)

it didn’t change the colour of my skin but made it look flawless. I struggle to see good results with fake tan

Comparing fake tan to curling your hair misses a key distinction.

Curly hair isn’t a different colour, race, or ethnicity. People of every background can have curly, wavy, or straight hair. Curling your hair changes its style, not your perceived racial identity.

Skin colour is different. A fake tan is specifically intended to make your skin appear darker than it naturally is. If the goal is to alter your appearance by changing your skin tone, that is not comparable to styling your hair.

You don’t need to change your skin colour. Ever. Hair styling is about presentation; changing skin tone is about altering a fundamental physical characteristic that carries social, cultural, and historical meaning.

They’re simply not the same thing.

Palmers Cocoa Butter gradual tan. Put a bit of ordinary moistiroser on the dry bits, knees and heels before you start to prevent patchiness. For my pale skin 1-2 days is enough to take the edge off pasty, without looking overdone or fake.

Yes, yes, and more yes!
Slow and subtle is your answer.

FruAashild · 13/06/2026 04:56

@Shadowers I think if you're black then hair is absolutely ' a fundamental physical characteristic that carries social, cultural, and historical meaning'.

Yes! They work by emitting UV which and your skin but also causes cancer

How do sunbeds cause skin cancer? | Cancer Research UK

Sunbeds, sunlamps and tanning booths use harmful UV rays and increase the risk of melanoma skin cancer.

For a special occasion I'd get a spray tan.
But otherwise Vita Liberata body blur is very good (wash off) or Loving Tan (lasts about a week)

RampantIvy · 13/06/2026 07:02

Crikey. There are a couple of posters on this thread who think that women who want to make the most of themselves are wrong for doing so.

It is not a moral failure to want to put a bit of gradual tan on your legs, for heaven's sake.

I shall be doing the same for an event later today. I will even shave my legs, or is that beyond the pale? No pun intended.

I get wanting to look good, wear nice clothes, jewellery, interesting makeup even. But why does making the best of ourselves so often involve fixing perceived physical flaws that endlessly make money for big companies? As someone else posted, on this side of the planet, we want our skin darker, on the other women are lightening their skin. Crazy when you think about the dissatisfaction with how we naturally are.

Well equally there's no objective standard is there. I find naturally pale skin much more attractive than tanned skin.

FruAashild · 13/06/2026 09:29

@RampantIvy stop the hyperbole, nobody has said women who use fake tan are suffering from moral failure. People are just pointing out that naturally pale skin (just like naturally dark skin) is prefect as it is and doesn't need to have artificial pigment applied to be socially acceptable. Mumsnet is famously feminist, and feminism is about pointing out the ways in which social expectations are gendered and often used to control women. You can do that analysis without criticising the women who succumb to those social expectations. You can even succumb to those social expectations yourself while still criticising them.

Agreed. A tan is literally sun damage. Whether it’s fake or not I find it odd that that would be considered attractive
