Hindu wedding

Ive been invited to a Hindu wedding this summer and I have a beautiful red silk dress with gold flecks in it. Now I'm conscious that this is the colour that a Hindu bride would wear.
I should say that it is wedding of two men, so there will be no bride.
I think I’m ok to wear my red and gold dress. What do you think?

Go for it

You are ok. You could have worn red even if it were a man and a woman.
As bling as possible is the rule!

Honestly I still wouldn’t. The grooms might be in those colours (often in a heterosexual wedding they would match the bride) and even if not everyone Indian person you spoke to would probably clock it. Especially silk with gold. It’s a bit like wearing a white satin dress with crystals or lace on it to a gay English wedding… doesn’t matter that there’s no bride.

to the reception probably fine

Dozens because I am Hindu. I and all my family would be thinking “oops clearly nobody told her”

Ok, I’ll have a think. Thanks for your responses, much appreciated

Seriously?

I have been to 4 and the name of the game is… colour and bling. No one gives a damn about red.

And a same sex Hindu wedding…. Not exactly run of the mill and I reckon it’ll be a judgement free zone.

When you say dress, is it a lehnga, or a Western style dress?
So long as you are not dressed up in bridal bling, it's absolutely fine. Hindu weddings are all about the colour and celebration. Avoid black and white.

hotflashes · 07/06/2026 14:40

It’s a western style dress from lk Bennett, so it’s not Indian in style

In my Hindu community nobody cares if you wear red, even if bride does.. And non-Indians are not expected to buy anything new. You can if you want to, of course.
That should be fine, especially as it seems a non-trad wedding.

i Went to a Hindu wedding and all the women changed their clothes between the afternoon reception and evening reception

Gettingbysomehow · 07/06/2026 19:18

My stepfather is hindu and I grew up abroad in his country. He says nobody at a hindu wedding would wear bride colours but given its two men you might get away with it.
