Is this not special enough/expensive enough for my son's wedding?

My son is getting married next year. June wedding. Someone on her recommended this dress for someone else. I went ahead and ordered it - a size smaller as that was all that was available. It has some weight to it and I love it but is it a bit cheapskate for mother of the groom. The money is not www.debenhams.com/product/jolie-moi-angel-sleeve-tiered-hem-maxi-dress_p-3e6c2c44-815f-42c7-b1db-67eae670cce8?colour=Multi&size=10&gclsrc=aw.ds&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=22915808283&gbraid=0AAAAABevdS7lom0v68CypUOUtJ7wI713e&gclid=Cj0KCQjwio_RBhDMARIsAJPveNPX9QJHogyDX5JR4S_T4TALqJat6EcPACrQj2f_XntgPAeZTx04zrkaAnTFEALw_wcB

That looks like something I’d do the school run in, with trainers or flip flops. It’s not about the money. It’s just yet another, a bog standard, unspecial floral dress. Sorry, but I think something more structured and formal is required. That’s if you care about such things (which I’m guessing you do seeing as you asked). It’s also totally okay to just wear whatever the hell you want that isn’t white or offensive or too revealing!

Wow. Congrats. I do the school run in Primark leggings and a baggy Nirvana (or other grunge/metal band) t shirt. I also do the shopping, appointments, hanging at home etc etc in similar garb.

Are you comfortable in chiffon maxi dress at 8am?

typed Mother of the Groom into Google and Karen Millen came up. This is a similar style https://www.karenmillen.com/product/karen-millen-stripe-fabric-detail-fluid-short-sleeve-midi-dress_bkk29020?colour=pink It is a bit more expensive but not too out stuffy. I have told my son I am not wearing something fussy, it's just not me.

I prefer the first one, by a long way.

I struggled to find a mother of the bride outfit for months. I one day went into Tesco !!!! Who had a 50% sale and found a beautiful dress that fit perfectly. I added a gorgeous silver hat. Chiffon shrug and shoes which combined cost about 200 times more for and stood next to my daughter on the day in a dress that cost her 1000s of pounds and looked the part. We have exquisite photos to prove it.

That’s lovely. The sleeves are gorgeous.

curious79 · Today 11:32

It’s beautiful. Just accessorise to dress it up

The first one is better

It’s perfect. With your hat/fascinator and buttonhole it will be lovely.

Much nicer. It's viscose and lined.

I attended a wedding reception just last night. I wore an M&S dress that I bought from eBay for £3.50, shoes and handbag from Shein that I had for another wedding 2 years ago. It looked lovely, I got some compliments especially for my shoes and pretty funky bag. No one will know unless you tell them, wear it and enjoy the day 🤗

sontamol · Today 11:49

It's a perfectly good dress and looks great. YOU like it, and most of all you feel relaxed and comfortable in it. That's important. Nothing worse than a very expensive designer dress that just doesn't FEEL right and you are pulling and tugging at it, or feel a bit "out there" in it.

Accessorise the hell out of it and you will look absolutely gorgeous.

Honestly if you looked at the ten best dressed (ahem) at the Phillips wedding yesterday, you would think they had just rolled out of bed into the nearest thing they could find. If that's the benchmark for fashion and style, well I'm gobsmacked!

Wear the dress, try different colour accessories, make a statement with the bits and all will be gorgeous.

Chocolattecoffeecup · Today 11:52

It's a nice dress for a wedding guest. I suppose it depends who you style it.

Not sure of the relevance of the size if you're saying it fits you?

MeetMeOnTheCorner · Today 11:57

Buttonholes for women? Not at chic weddings!

ERthree · Today 12:06

I think the dress is perfect. Enjoy the day🌺

The Royal family looked great yesterday. Anne didn’t and her hat was a joke. However these dresses and accessories are perfect and the PofW looked wonderful. Zara looks amazing these days and I love that the guys match their waistcoats to colours in the dresses.

It's gorgeous OP - good find! A jacket might be useful in case the weather is cool but personally I wouldn't wear a hat, especially if you're not a hat fan.

sontamol · Today 12:14

There's absolutely nothing special about the dresses above at the Phillips wedding, with the exception of Zara's which is a fab colour and beautifully sculped for her figure. Even K's dress is like something my mother would wear, and I do understand her determination not to upstage the bride. There were some real horrors there it has to be said.

BlackRowan · Today 12:20

If money is not an issue go to John Lewis styling appointment. This dress is frumpy

I hate all of those dresses apart from the one that everyone on the royal wedding thread said looked like a silk dressing gown, and I also loved Kate’s outfit.

What’s wrong with maxi dress at 8 am? It’s very easy to throw a dress on with trainers. I wear a maxi dress around the house in the summer

I agree The Princess of Wales is always spot on and so is Zara Philips these days but look at their budgets!! Sky high. Yes, they look perfect but it’s a lot of money to pull that off and most would struggle on less than £2000. There are brands like Beulah and Susannah that cater for this market and Emilia Wickstead et al but you need money! The op will look great if this dress is accessorised in a clsssy way.

Oh please. You can get dresses like that for 150-200

I mean. It’s “feels like 10 degrees” with wind gusts here at the moment (London). No one is wearing that dress on the school run in the UK. I would have worn something like that to my son’s prep school annual speech day where the unofficial dress code was “low key wedding” for which the OP’s dress is perfect.

Yes. I like that one and Kate’s. The others are dreadful - Bea, Sophie, Zara etc but it’s just not my style, they looked nice.

Agree. I can’t see the fuss about Beulah. The founder of the brand was at the Phillips wedding yesterday and even her dress looked too tight on her FGS.
