Wedding guest dress options

Need help! Which of these dresses do you think is most appropriate to wear as a guest to a wedding in France. I love the first one but my daughter has said she thinks it’s too white (& therefore to be avoided in the tradition of only brides wear white). Would value any views. It’s going to be hot so I can’t add a coloured jacket. Many thanks!

Love the first one . I don’t think it’s too white

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · Yesterday 07:55

First is nice. Second nice colours but a bit too casual.

Travellingraspberry · Yesterday 07:56

I think the one with the pinks/purple in, that's really lovely. The first one is too white on its own and the other one just looks a bit drab.

A little googling would suggest that the 'no white for guests' tradition is even stricter in France.

"White is traditionally meant only for the bride's "la robe de mariée." Even a dress with a white base or white-heavy prints can be seen as an etiquette misstep."

Do you have any dresses that aren't predominantly white?

Do you know the level of formality of the event? Although all perfectly nice, the material of your dresses makes them look very casual - dresses for lounging at your villa or strolling to a food market. If that’s how other guests will be dressed it’s fine. Otherwise you might want something slightly smarter.

And with a different background colour.

I’ve never heard of that rule and I grew up there. I’ve been to many weddings and people have worn white dresses with patterns (including my own!). None of them look remotely bridal.

I think the pink one suits you best.

PhaedraTwo · Yesterday 08:18

I like all of them but the pink is the nicest.

Littlebitpsycho · Yesterday 08:22

Another who agrees the pink is nicest

Agree with the too casual vibe unless wedding is same.

The pink one looks lovely.

Not helpful but I love the white dress! Where is it from please?

I think the fiist and third look nice with your red shoes, and you could maybe jazz things up a bit with a red belt or red accesories of some sort. It the background of the first one white, it looks more cream to me?

The pink one is really pretty but its not saying wedding to me.

Petrine · Yesterday 08:41

Sorry, I think they’re all too casual.

FlipFlopZebra · Yesterday 08:43

The first one is nicest but probably too white. I do think they’re all maybe a bit casual but it depends on type of wedding.

I think the best one is the pink one.

Gonnaeatalotofpeaches · Yesterday 08:47

If the bride and groom are family are French then French weddings tend to be more casual than British weddings- my French husband had to brief his family on British wedding dress code when we married.
I think the pink!

PhaedraTwo · Yesterday 08:49

I don't think they're too casual. The white and the pink wouldn't have been out of place at the last 2 weddings I was at, one of which was in the Saville Club in London. I sat next to someone wearing a Cefinn linen dress which was beautiful but I suspect the "too casual" posters think would have been too casual.

For them, what do you think think isn't "too casual"? A Phase 8 "occasion dress"?

It's Me +Em but not current stock

That pink one is gorgeous

CaptainCalm · Yesterday 08:53

French weddings are usually more casual than British ones so assuming it’s a French couple say the second one is perfect. Love the colours and you’ll look cool, chic and relaxed

gindrop · Yesterday 08:56

The pink dress is lovely - I'd wear that.

I've only been to two french weddings (one Paris, one South of France), so no expert! But they both seemed quite relaxed in terms of dress code, with more of a range of styles from fairly casual to smart. Several women were wearing trousers or jumpsuits, which I haven't seen so much at English weddings.

FormerlySpeckledyHen · Yesterday 09:09

Definitely the pink one, and I don’t even like pink. It looks fabulous on you.

The awful pattern matching on the front, or lack of, on the first one would put me off.

Pearandavocado · Yesterday 10:17

I prefer the pink dress.

Firesidechatter · Yesterday 10:20

Pink for me too, the white is too white I think. And whether you agree with the tradition or not, or have heard of it, the fact is many will have and you don’t want people side eyeing you thinking why is that woman wearing white.

mimiasovitch · Yesterday 10:20

Not related, but I LOVE your sandals. Where are they from?

DappledThings · Yesterday 10:21

The pink and purple one is the nicest, I really like that one. First one with the black is fine, don't like the one with brown bits. Are they brown? Or a sort of sand colour? That one just looks stained to me.
