Wedding guest dress options

Need help! Which of these dresses do you think is most appropriate to wear as a guest to a wedding in France. I love the first one but my daughter has said she thinks it’s too white (& therefore to be avoided in the tradition of only brides wear white). Would value any views. It’s going to be hot so I can’t add a coloured jacket. Many thanks!

The ones used for decent pictures were wearing Beulah (the founder was there) or were Royal family who definitely know how to dress!

But did they forget to tell the Princess of Wales about this incredibly important rule?

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 07/06/2026 17:36

@NeverDropYourMooncup What was wrong the the PofW? She looked amazing as usual! Just chic and a style that suits her.

santamole · 07/06/2026 17:38

I wouldn't be rushing out to buy anything Beulah TBH. And the POW didn't get the memo of all clones to Beulah Land. 😊

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 07/06/2026 17:41

@santamole They didn’t all wear Beulah! I guess you don’t get invited anywhere to need the dresses but if anyone does, they make a lot of sense regarding style for a formal day wedding. Easy enough to find similar for less money.

santamole · 07/06/2026 17:51

Relax @MeetMeOnTheCorner it's only a lighthearted wedding discussion. Very civilised it is too, so far.

Dresses are not mandatory for every event either. You are insulting me now and that's not very nice.

Oh yes, I think it was a very nice outfit. The off-white/cream colour of it really suited her.

Shame that she was apparently committing a heinous sin as a wedding guest.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 07/06/2026 20:12

@NeverDropYourMooncup So was it too “white”? Ha! Didn’t look like the bride’s dress to me!

Those dresses look very.... event-appropriate! Perfect for a royal wedding in sure, but they'd look quite out of place at any of the weddings I've been to.

Going by the many, many threads about how terrible it is to even have a scrap of a pale colour, never mind cream with a slight peach tint (although that could be the way my laptop renders colour) to a hat, it does seem to be the greatest W-LMC offence a woman can commit, over and above all of the following

Green
Red
Bright colours
Pastels
Black
Dark colours
Clashing with the bridal party colours
Toning with the bridal party colours
A dress
Trousers
Satin
Silk
Lace
Leather
Velvet
Bare shoulders
Covered shoulders
Short sleeves
Long sleeves
Something long
Something short
Something mid
A full skirt
A narrow skirt
Trousers
A jumpsuit
Sequins
Embroidery
Stripes
Florals
Spots
Block colour
Casual
Smart
Low cut
High cut
A hat
A fascinator
A hair band
A hair clip
Shawl
Pashmina
Cardigan
Jewellery

Not entirely sure what's left if we leave out the 'we got married in jeans and t-shirts for 50p with a buffet thrown in and everybody said it was the best wedding ever' ones, but whatever there is, somebody will say it's awful to wear it to a wedding.

Ophir · 07/06/2026 22:59

These are very casual dresses, I’d rethink

MoreRabbit · 07/06/2026 23:25

PhaedraTwo · 05/06/2026 08:49

I don't think they're too casual. The white and the pink wouldn't have been out of place at the last 2 weddings I was at, one of which was in the Saville Club in London. I sat next to someone wearing a Cefinn linen dress which was beautiful but I suspect the "too casual" posters think would have been too casual.

For them, what do you think think isn't "too casual"? A Phase 8 "occasion dress"?

The devil works hard but when it comes to trying to wipe Phase 8 off the high st, @PhaedraTwo works harder 😂

msmolli · 08/06/2026 12:44

Unless it's a very casual, out in the garden event then I don't think any of them are appropriate. They look like simple summer dresses.

What sort of event is it re formality?

Princesspeaches99 · 08/06/2026 15:28

I think those dresses would be ok for walking around in the sunshine but if you are going to the effort of getting hair & makeup done they would look a bit odd. You could find something much fancier.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 08/06/2026 15:57

@NeverDropYourMooncup You have nailed it there. It’s very odd when some very smart people wear very suitable clothes they are torn apart on these threads. It’s bizarre.

luckylavender · 08/06/2026 16:40

SeditiousPam · 05/06/2026 07:59

Do you know the level of formality of the event? Although all perfectly nice, the material of your dresses makes them look very casual - dresses for lounging at your villa or strolling to a food market. If that’s how other guests will be dressed it’s fine. Otherwise you might want something slightly smarter.

And with a different background colour.

Edited

That's just what I thought.

CaptainCalm · 08/06/2026 19:47

@msmolli French weddings are really quite casual, think men in shorts and a shirt for example, or trousers and shirt but no tie or jacket. Not all French weddings of course, but the majority will be much more casual than a UK wedding.

Inmyuggs · 08/06/2026 19:51

Pink.

This is very much not what I’ve seen, it was all very smart dark suits

Maybe a different part of France then? I am French but from the non-fancy bit of the south. For us summer weddings are relaxed, funerals too incidentally, you’d rarely see anyone in a suit.

Gonnaeatalotofpeaches · 08/06/2026 21:34

@CaptainCalm my husbands from Brittany and it’s v casual there also. We live near Annecy and the weddings I have seen in town are very dressy then you have the type in the mountains that are very casual.
