What changes made the biggest difference to your overall appearance?

Inspired by some other threads (NC alert) I’ve decided the time is ripe for an overhaul/glow up. My plan is to make significant changes over a period of time and do a new one each month whilst keeping the old changes- nothing revolutionary but needed and I hope to get long term benefits/results.

at the moment my diet is pretty crap-which will be my next focus - the first was a new hairdo (which is a change and growing on me!), then multi vitamins, then 2L of water each day then a form of exercise each week.

In the short term before as I’m making bigger adjustments I’m hoping to get some advice on what are the likely to be the most significant gains to look like me but better.
I don’t like the feel of acrylics and currently don’t wear any make up.

Off to find out what a Japanese manicure is . Damn this thread.

  • a skincare routine
  • Japanese manicure (I also don't like acrylics, and my nails look amazing, so polished)
  • teeth whitening

I have never heard of a Japanese manicure before, so I googled it. I am now off to find somewhere local that does one.

I agree with pp about wearing a properly fitted bra. It makes a huge difference to your appearance.

Can I ask which eyeliner you are using? I’ve tried a few and found they either pull at the skin or are fairly smudgy

I use the Clinique dark brown retractable eyeliner (the one with a smudger on the end) and for the lighter shade of tan, I used to use Aveda’s sepia which they’ve discontinued. God knows why - it was a soft pencil, went on so gently, the colour was my summer staple and it had staying power. I’m at the end stumps of this pencil now and desperately trying to colour match. Not doing very well I must admit….😞

@LittleEsmewhich eyeliner for the tight lining is it that you use please? I’ve yet to master anew the art of eyeliner on my older eyes. It’s like I woke up one day and went “crimes! These eyes don’t work now!”

To tight line (new phrase for me but makes perfect sense), I’m using the scrap ends of Aveda’s eye pencil - a wonderfully soft and buttery pencil in Sepia (perfect for me when slightly tanned), which they’ve only gone and bloody discontinued.

I’m hunting for something similar but nothing is light enough. <sob>

I have lightish green eyes. Once, just for fun I decided to try turquoise soft contacts. They suit my complexion, look natural with my hair, and people tell me how pretty I am. It’s the easiest, quickest upgrade ever.

JFDIYOLO · 08/06/2026 00:25

If you don't usually wear makeup, here's my level 1 make up kit for starters:

Boots no7 tinted moisturiser
Maybelline Fit Me concealer
Vaseline's rose tinted lipsalve in little pink tin
Nude/skin tone push up eye pencil for tight lining waterline
Any brownish-black mascara (I'm using entirely waterproof now)
Eye brow gel
1 coat clear nail varnish

Level 2 - add:

Moisturising lipstick close to your natural lip colour that you can use as a blusher too
Light brown/bronze/grey push up eye pencil with smudger - use along lower lashes

Body:

Mix half rich body cream and half baby oil in a pot then shake it like mad til it emulsifies. It's gorgeous to use.

A perfume discovery set - M&S and Saltworks do lovely ones.
.

RampantIvy · 08/06/2026 06:09

That's too much make up for me @JFDIYOLO .
Tinted moisturiser, blusher and lipstick and I'm ready to go.

I like the idea of a perfume discovery set.

Start off with a deep clean. Gradually replace discoloured fillings. Use whitening products. That’s a start. Discuss a payment plan with your dentist

Thanks, I don't have money for this. I do keep on top of cleaning and so on.

bafta16 · 08/06/2026 08:15

I am bamboozled by skin care products and makeup in general.

quirkychick · 10/06/2026 11:59

@bafta16 I keep to a very simple, consistent skincare routine.
You need a cleanser, moisturiser and spf in am and cleanser, moisturiser pm to start with.

Whereland · 10/06/2026 12:02

I lost 10kg and put on a layer of gradual tan once a week; makes a big difference!

Thanks but which brands? No idea.

Doesn’t matter - they’re all very similar, cheaper the better!

I used to use Simple cleanser, which is good. I also used to use Neal's Yard Rose and Mallow moisturiser. I used to use Ordinary Retinol, which is good and reasonably priced.

Currently, I favour natural skincare and I currently use almond oil to cleanse with a warm cloth. I then use rosehip oil as a moisturiser. I use a mineral spf, whichever is on offer. At night I do similar, but have started using sea buckthorn oil instead of retinol (be warned it's very yellow/orange) then moisturise.

I think consistency is the key, rather than lots of fancy skincare steps.

Mounjaro (best invention ever)
Hair dye (tried embracing grey, looked 20 years older)
Having my eyebrows professionally shaped
Botox
Lip filler
Sunscreen every day
Water, water, water
Not drinking or smoking

Lip filler certainly makes a difference, not usually for the good!

GrimDamnFanjo · 11/06/2026 13:13

Losing weight, strength training and Pilates.
on the visual side, creating a style I love and works day to day, restricting way colour palette to shades that work together.
on enhancements, Botox, teeny bit of filler and permanent lashline tattoo ( not eyeliner) between my lashes - gamechanger.

AtLeastInHeavenICanSkate · 12/06/2026 06:43

Lip filler isn’t really the look I was after. Didn’t think I needed to specify it was positive changes I was after 😁

Whowhatwerewolf · 12/06/2026 09:20

Obvious lip filler looks terrible but when it's done subtly especially on women who have lost lip volume with age it can really do wonders. I don't have it but my friend does and it looks great. If she hadn't told me she'd had it I wouldn't have been able to tell it wasn't her natural lips

PotatoBreadForTheWin · 12/06/2026 15:16

I often think there must be loads of women who’ve had excellent treatments that I have no idea about. I bet there are tonnes of people with great, natural looking lip fillers
