Greasy hair problem

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 30/05/2026 09:48

I suffer from greasy hair.

Don’t tell me to stop washing it because it’s so bad on Day 3 it HAS to be washed or I look a tramp

I’ve tried every shampoo going.

The problem I have now is that I cut a fringe in to hide my eleven lines but it doesn’t really do the trick and it’s SO greasy the FIRST day after a wash and looks absolutely shit. Do I just resign myself to the lines and get rid of the fringe? Is there anything I can try?

I am the same. I wash my hair every couple of days and could never go to day 3. I wash with Vosene as it contains salicylic acid so stimulates the scalp and dries up oil. My second wash is just with any oil non mega moisturising shampoo. I have a fringe and on the alternate days that I don’t wash my hair I either wash it in the shower (tie my hair in a pony tail, put on a shower cap and leave my fringe out to wash. I keep the pony tail in and dry my fringe with the hair dryer) or wash at the sink (again just scrape my hair back in a pony tail and wash my fringe at the sink with shampoo and dry with the hair dryer).
I like the pink Monday Haircare dry shampoo. Spray underneath your hair instead of on top.
I never let my hair air dry as it’s greasy straight away if I do this.

Try a gentler shampoo plus double washing can help a lot because the first cleanse breaks down oil & the second actually cleans the scalp properly.

Haven’t read all of the responses.

Dry shampoo. spray a bit after you’ve washed and dried your hair. Add more the day after if you need it. You should be able to get a few days - I wash my hair twice a week and dry shampoo in between as needed

Just wash your fringe
Dry shampoo
Backcomb backcomb backcomb

Ladygardenerinderby · 01/06/2026 20:16

I agree washing daily edit if it’s long is a ball ache timewise. Three days is really good going for greasy hair tho . Wash your fringe daily under the tap that’s kind of standard for fringes anyway but I’ll make you feel fresher . Baptise dry shampoo in my opinion is the best going they do a brunette one if you’re dark haired and it’s like magic , shake shake shake the can before use and lift areas of your hsir up with your brush and spray those roots and massage . Adding too much oil especially your ears up won’t help at all keep it away ftom your scalp .

LindorDoubleChoc · 01/06/2026 20:16

I have slightly greasy hair and a fringe. I wash my hair day 1, don't wash day 2, wash fringe day 3, don't wash day 4. Wash it all again day 5.

When I was younger I had to wash it all every other day and that was just the way it was. There's no remedy for it and no getting round it.

I wasn’t expecting this many replies. Thanks everyone!

I wash my hair every other day and it’s greasy on day three if I don’t. It’s up to you how often you wash your hair OP, but you sound like you have completely normal , not greasy hair.

That said, the Aveda dry shampoo is excellent if you want to extend time between washes. Use it at night, then put a roller in your fringe with a shower cap whilst you shower and you are good to go.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 01/06/2026 20:34

completely normal, not greasy hair

I really, REALLY don’t but thanks!

Do you use a hairdryer to dry your hair? If so, you may have the heat too high. My greasy hair improved massively when my hairdresser suggested i dry my hair on the lowest setting, as too much heat can stimulate the oil glands on your scalp.

I’ve had to wash my hair every day since I was old enough to choose for myself. It started to be greasy about age 10, but my DM wouldn’t allow me to wash it more than twice a week, so it was only not greasy 2 days a week.
I’m 61 this week and still haven’t grown out of my ‘teenage greasy hair’. There’s no solution other than daily washing.

Best greasy hair shampoo:

Johnson's baby shampoo

Tea tree tingle

Green clay L'Oréal volume one

Redken cleansing creme was great

Whole blends charcoal

Any men's clay/charcoal shampoo you can find is great

Shampoo twice. Don't use conditioner. Don't touch your hair.

Is it so bad to wash your hair every day?

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 02/06/2026 05:13

If you really, really want to keep using your special conditioner and serum you could put those on at night as a treatment then shampoo out in the morning. No conditioner, or just a light one on the ends.

HmmWhatNameToHave · 02/06/2026 06:09

I always washed my hair daily up until I hit my mid 40s then I managed to go every other day. Leave the soap on for several minutes, and condition the ends only, rinse really well. I brush my teeth while the soap gets to work.
Use a little dry shampoo on the greasy areas to help it through day 2. Again leave that on for awhile before brushing out.
So sorry about your hair thinning I found collagen helped my hair, I hope your health condition improves. 🤞
I eat more olive oil now I'm older, and my hair is less greasy so not sure about what the other poster said.

It’s just not practical for me for a few reasons. I might end up trying though.

I wash my hair every day. I think some people have to, and honestly unless you have really thick hair that takes ages to dry I don’t really understand the logic of NOT washing your hair every day. Like you’re in the shower already presumably.

tinyladybird · 02/06/2026 08:51

Soontobesingles · 30/05/2026 09:56

I also have greasy hair and I have to wash it daily or I look as if it’s wet. It is revolting but I have been this way my since puberty. The only time it changes was when I was pregnant and then once a week was fine, more like normal people’s hair. I think some of us just make excess oil and there isn’t really a treatment for that (maybe accutane but I managed to control my skin in other ways, so it’s just hair that’s an issue for me).

I am the exact same. God I loved my hair during pregnancy - the one a week was was unreal 😂

Phantastick · 02/06/2026 08:52

I have hair up every other day and try to never air dry. And put dry shampoo on the night before, rather morning of, it looks better.

I used to wash it every day and lockdown meant I could go a week without it but god it looked disgusting. However it did get me to washing every other day but it took a while.

tiramisugelato · 02/06/2026 08:55

Just wash your hair everyday. Mine is super fine and greasy and needs a daily wash otherwise I look like I’ve stuck my head in a chip pan.

I don’t understand the argument about it being impractical - surely you’re in the shower anyway and it only takes a couple of minutes?

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 02/06/2026 08:57

@raisinglittlepeople12 I don’t shower every day, no. Everything every other day.

CoffeeAndHobnobs · 02/06/2026 09:17

Do you have a hand held shower head off the main one that has multiple settings? If so, I find using this on a good pressure, and really blasting any shampoo reminants out my hair works well.

I use OGX shampoo (purple one) which I love, but did use dh's head and shoulders the other day and it worked surprisingly great, so changing it up sometimes is good too. Usually lightly dry with towel, and air dry where possible. If I do have to use a hairdryer, I'll use it on cool setting.

Oh and as others have mentioned, a little dry shampoo rubbed into scalp to lift the roots on day 2 if necessary. I use Batista, as haven't gotten away with the unbranded, despite prices being so much cheaper!
