Greasy hair problem

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 30/05/2026 09:48

I suffer from greasy hair.

Don’t tell me to stop washing it because it’s so bad on Day 3 it HAS to be washed or I look a tramp

I’ve tried every shampoo going.

The problem I have now is that I cut a fringe in to hide my eleven lines but it doesn’t really do the trick and it’s SO greasy the FIRST day after a wash and looks absolutely shit. Do I just resign myself to the lines and get rid of the fringe? Is there anything I can try?

I’m 56 and I am just starting to get to the point where I don’t have to wash my hair every day. I’ve tried leaving it for a week, every shampoo around and the only thing that works has been washing it daily.
Sorry

Hybird · 31/05/2026 08:49

Every time you wash your hair, do it twice. Just doing that made my hair feel so much cleaner - but don’t use too much shampoo. Only apply conditioner or serum to the ends. Aveeno Apple Cider shampoo is a great clarifier and should be used once a week. Maybe use a tea tree shampoo the rest of the time.

Dry shampoo should also be used as soon as you have dried your hair, not just when it is already greasy. That hack works. Plus if you lack volume in your hair it plumps it up. I like Co Lab.

Dry shampoo or wash every day.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 31/05/2026 09:10

@Hybird So I use a shampoo bar for oily hair and then I’m using a shampoo for hair growth. I am applying more conditioner than I should be because it’s one of the steps on the hair growth set of products- there’s a conditioner, a mask and a serum. I know it’s probably contributing but I need both things treating oily hair and treating hair loss

A shampoo bar won't be helping. They never wash hair properly.

Have you upped your olive oil intake or oil intake at all. That will make your hair greasy.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 31/05/2026 09:26

Now I’ve never heard that before ! @SignGrudgeBluebook when I do cook, which isn’t every day, I do use Olive Oil

Hybird · 31/05/2026 09:27

Also, don’t touch your hair too much.

I don’t find shampoo bars cleansing enough.

I think the regime you are doing is not helping, so if you continue you will have to put up with more oiliness.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 31/05/2026 09:31

@Hybird I know it’s a rock and a hard place because my hair is in need of both but I’ve still never found a shampoo that really gets rid of my oil long term

Hair growth serums are snake oil if you ask me.

Most hair loss is either due to traction alopecia, telogen effluvium which happens to everybody but can be brought on in times of stress, hormonal and dietary changes or an increase in DHT within the blood stream.

You'd be best speaking to a real dermatologist about your options. There is medication you can take to reduce the telogen effluvium phase as well as topical ointments but they aren't suitable for everybody.

Making sure your hair is hydrated enough, has enough protein but not too much and not using tight hairstyles will help prevent breakage.

Botox and get rid of the fringe.

Doesn’t every white persons hair get a bit greasy by day 3? Thats a long time…

Edited

What I mean is, I only get two days out of a wash, other people get a lot longer.
Unfortunately I have proven resistant to Botox I’ve had it a few times even went to a really posh place. It only really worked the first couple of times

Wash every day and use head and shoulders.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 31/05/2026 09:50

@Jimmyneutronsforehead my hair loss isn’t too bad it’s a consequence of something else medical but it’s enough for me to be concerned. It might well be snake oil but I’m trying anything at the moment!

Also, keeping your scalp healthy with unblocked follicles is crucial for hair growth. That means staying on top of the grease.

Any oil, including fish oil will make your hair greasy. Knock it right off for a couple of months and see if it makes a difference.

@TheOGCCL so, I have been using a lot of conditioner and serum to stimulate growth speciality ones because I’ve had some hair loss, I realise it’s probably exacerbating the grease

This might be adding to the greasey hair stop using conditoner i just use it on my ends, use a clarifying shampoo once a week to get rid of the build up of oil from the conditioner and serums. Hopefully it will clear up, can you take supplements instead for your hair ?

ItsNotMeEither · 31/05/2026 14:29

I wash my hair every second day. I can’t stand the feel of unclean or greasy hair, but, if I do need to go a third day, then dry shampoo is the answer!

For me, it’s also the fringe that’s first to look oily to me. If I’m going out somewhere on the night I plan to shampoo, then a quick spray across the fringe and push it through does wonders.

If it’s a full third day. I split my hair into two layers in the morning and then put some dry shampoo spray between the two layers. It’s a life saver!

unsevered67 · 31/05/2026 14:44

My hair gets greasy quickly too. I do sometimes wash just my fringe and my hairdresser told me to just wash the top part of my hair if I didn’t have time to do it all. Not tried that yet as I don’t know how easy it would be.
And maybe everyone else in the world already knows this - but I read recently that you need to wash your scalp rather than your hair. Which means for me working harder to get shampoo at the back and sides and get it onto my scalp . But doing this has really made a difference. I’m probably just admitting that I didn’t wash my hair properly before

Owninterpreter · 31/05/2026 15:05

When i was in hospital on bed rest recently, I used dry shampoo at bedtime. Then in the morning and they gave me a bowl with water and bar soap and paper towels each day.I literally wiped the wet paper towels over the greasy bit and then with plain water. it looked like i had washed it properly. People kept asking how I was managing to wash and style my hair so well.

Bulldog01 · 31/05/2026 15:05

Hi,

I had greasy hair when i was around 11 yrs.
It Settled down, around 20 & when i had my Children at 24 & 34.
I then went into the menopause around 40, it was not greasy, if anything i had dry hair.

Now i am 66, its driving me mad.

I need to wash my hair every day, it just so greasy. In the space of 24-30 hours it looks greasy & unkept.
Hair was always very thick, but fine not so thick now due to age.
I use expensive shampoo, which is kind to hair. I never use a conditioner!

My skin has turned greasy, its like being a teenager again!
Anyone on here know why?
Would you recommend any products to help,it makes me feel unclean!

Thanking you in advance.

Rosieposy89 · 31/05/2026 15:08

I have to wash my hair every other day - on the second day it looks flat. I have found my hair looks great with Faith in Nature shampoo, no conditioner. I use a clarifying shampoo once a week which has made a difference

LondonRidge · 31/05/2026 15:11

I didn’t realise that this was unusual for people - I have always had hair like this and wash it everyday to look nice, day 2 it’s up in a “slick” ponytail. Any tips gratefully received… I have fine hair and am 45

Lomonald · 31/05/2026 15:46

@Bulldog01 your skin is your age apparently bloody hormones I use a toner from La Roche Posey (sp) it dries my skin up so I can use moisturiser.
