Where can a petite woman in her 70s find flattering dresses?

I'm in my 70s, size 14 and 5'. I mainly buy online. Over the last few years I have amassed half a dozen dresses, mainly from Seasalt, Landsend etc. They look fine on the size 8, 5' 10 model but I look faintly ridiculous. I don't think that I've worn any of them. I'd like a couple of dresses that I can feel comfortable in and if not flattering at least okay. Mainly they are patterned but I think that a plainer look would be better. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

You need realistic self evaluation. Size 14 at 5 foot is not petite....is actually quite broad .....your age does not make a difference, unless there has been muscular and skeletal distortion which bothers you....

As far as I'm aware petite is people who are 5' 3" and under.

Have you looked at Roman Originals?

Roman Petite Dresses

i haven’t bought any dresses from there, but have a few nice cotton blouses.

Here’s another link that should select knee length dresses.

I’m similar.
If you like Seasalt then check online for their petite range, I don’t think they sell them in the shops but if you find something you like in store then check with the assistant as they will often order in for you.
They often have petite items in the sale, like this one. Check “collections” and click petite

Similarly Crew Clothing, had no idea they sold petite and stumbled across them when searching for a pair of cropped trousers.

Phase Eight are fairly good for petite or knee length in standard. I’ve picked up 3 dresses on V by requesting dress length. They have lovely jumpsuits. Lots of options in the sale atm

Similar age, size 12-14, and height 5ft 1in and yes that is petite despite the snarky comment above!
I haven’t bought any yet, but Joe Browns also do a petite range which look good and are reasonably priced.
With a bigger budget, Aspiga do a lot of their dresses in petite - I wore one for my son’s wedding last year.

Hobbs and Phase Eight

Fizbosshoes · 29/05/2026 12:48

Lots of petite ranges are made for people who are 5'3" ...which is a bit shit when youre under 5ft!
I was going to suggest Joe browns, and they actually give the lengths of all their dresses online, so you can compare to something you have thats the right length for you. (I need to buy petite midi dresses...and wear them as maxi!)

The OP is right, she is petite and it is about height. Why did it trigger you so much are you insecure about your height?

So unnecessarily rude.
Petite is a word used by all UK retailers to denote a height of 5'3 and under. In this context it does not mean dainty or slight.

It is deinitely petite. Petite is 5ft 3 and under. It doesn;t matter how broad you are.

My mum is 5ft and was a size 14 until she recently lost weight due to illness and she wears Seasalt dresses. I do find with Seasalt that they have several different styles and you have to find the one that suits you.

She also loves Roman Originals. Also try Hobbs petite range.

Another vote for Roman, I’m a typical petite size 14 and they always fit me and look great. Next has always been pretty poor for choice but better this year, sometimes a little on the big size. Phase eight used to be great but recently the sizing is strange. Blue Vanilla is also pretty good and their “normal “ fit” is ok for me so must just have less fabric/shorter.
