Why does SPF pill on my face even when used alone

I am having two trouble with pilling and can't seem to work out how to stop it.

Everything I have read is about multiple products with layers disagreeing or needing to dry. But I literally only use SPF or face cream with SPF on and it pills on its own on a clean face.

I have switched products and some will be better on some days than others. ours worse at the moment and I'm not sure if it's because I'm trying to use more SPF as it's hot and sunny or because of heat I'm sweating/more greasy skin.

I put on face cream with SPF (switched done to 30 as one with 50 was think and a nightmare for it) about 45 minutes ago and I'm sure it's all just rubbed off now.

I’m not sure, it could be that your skin is reacting to a silicone based one.
I’d recommend La Roche posay anthelios spf50, it’s quite pricey but very good and I wear multiple layers and it never pills or leaves a cast.

@hobbledyhoy is it shiny? I don’t have pilling but can’t seem to find a product that is matte. Even the matte ones leave a sheen. I know dewy skin is in but I don’t like the look personally. It must just be my face as the same cream applied on my arms doesn’t look greasy!

I use Tocobo (sold in Superdrug) and it's matte, and doesn't pill at all, and is SPF 50 PA++++. Tend to use La Roche Posay Anthelios SPF 50 on my body, but the Tocobo on my face.

@Polyesteredno I don’t find it shiny. My skin tends towards dry though.
I actually find my make up sits better with it on.

I have been using la Roche posay face spf and it is piling, less so than the face creams.

I wondered about buying the biore gel face spf but I guess I just want to understand why this is happening and why I can tolerate some products sometimes and not others

I don't wear any make up ever and don't use much skinner for it to be a build up

Do you have oily skin, perhaps it's reacting with the cream?

L’Oréal Paris Revitalift Clinical SPF 50+
is the only facial suncream I get on with. Currently on offer here

I use the Biore Watery Essence and it’s matte and doesn’t pill on me. I have used Anthelios, but find Biore much better. I have very oily skin and have found this to be the best.

greencrab · 29/05/2026 16:19

I don't know now, I didn't think my skin was oily but maybe this is all demonstrating it is.

Will try the suggestions thank you.... and maybe see if I can get a skin consultation in a department store for info on my skin type

Hi OP. If SPF pills even on bare skin it’s usually more about the formula itself interacting with either sweat/natural oils/application method. A lot of SPF formulas use film-formers & silicone elastomers that ball up when rubbed too much. Try applying in thinner sections & pressing instead of rubbing. Also sometimes people unknowingly apply way more than the skin can comfortably “set” at once (especially in heat & humidity!). Gel-creams or lighter fluid textures usually behave better if you’re prone to pilling.
