Would you buy an eight-year-old a coat with real fur trim?

My son, who’s 8, has his heart set on a Canada Goose coat with the real fur trim that we found for a good price on ebay for his birthday because all his friends have them and he thinks it’s the coolest thing .. I get the practicality, they’re warm and tough, but I’m really uneasy about the idea of him wearing real fur, especially coyote fur, which I’ve heard can involve pretty cruel trapping methods....

I don’t want to shut him down completely and make it a big fight, but I also don’t want to support something that feels wrong. Has anyone here let their child wear real fur? How did you explain it to them, or how did you steer them toward a faux option without it becoming a battle? He said the faux option looks terrible, which I do agree! Will it survive playground life without getting stolen?

Also, Canada Goose seems to have become a “drug dealer bling” brand in my area (big city) although I realise it may be different in other places of course.

His birthday is coming up and he’s asking for a CG coat in 30 degree heat?

Awfulinlaws · Today 13:15

No way. Wrong on so many levels. Cruelty and inappropriate interest in designer labels. At around the same age I explained to my son about fair trade, animal welfare standards, etc. also that it is ridiculous to spend a lot for marketing/a label.

It's not 30C all UK.
It's 12C in Lerwick.

I wouldn't on the grounds of cruelty, practicality and the link with organised crime, but that last one may just be my city. (Don't think so though, there's a very clear road man uniform that I wouldn't want my child aspiring to.)

manateeplushie · Today 13:18

where do you live that 8 year olds are strutting about in Canada Goose????

8TinyToeBeans · Today 13:21

No chance. I have no issue with ethical fur use - it has a place in appropriate communities, and I would be okay with wearing vintage fur, but there's no way that large scale products are ethically produced. And it's not cold enough here for a coat like that. He'd grow out of it long before it got any useful wear.

Palladin · Today 13:21

There's so much wrong with this. However, worst in my opionion is the torturous life those poor animals (both the geese and the dogs/coyotes or whatever poor species the fur comes from) are made to live before they get brutally killed.

YourWildAmberSloth · Today 13:21

Nope, not even just because of the fur but because they are too expensive. Even bought cheap on Ebay, its still amounts to a child running around in a £500+ jacket.

MoodyMargaret11 · Today 13:24

Interesting though, no one judges all the adults posting on the fashion boards about dresses and bags costing £500+
I think it's far more unhealthy for an adult to have this kind of fascination (probably stemming from childhood too).

Also interesting to see how many people find the fur industry abhorring, meanwhile having no issue eating meat from an equally cruel farm industry. Selective ethics, eh?

Bristolandlazy · Today 13:24

Would I, no I wouldn't. "A big fight" if that's a likely reaction all the more reason to say no. You maybe need to work on your parenting, I wouldn't tolerate that from an eight year old.

MeltyMomenrs · Today 13:25

JustPearlQuail · Today 12:34

To the people saying I should show him a video on how its made, won't that just traumatize him rather than solve any problem??

It might surprise/shick him, but traumatise?

either way he needs to understand the reality of what he's asking for.

they should be banned & I thought eBay forbid the selling of fur?

@MoodyMargaret11 I haven't eaten meat in 36 years.

StephensLass1977 · Today 13:25

No. And learn to say no to your son. He can't just get what he wants.

This is so cruel.

godmum56 · Today 13:27

nope. No way. Once children are adults, they can make their own choices and take the consequences. As a parent, you are entitled to say that you will not have real fur in your house or spend your money on it.

HoppingPavlova · Today 13:29

Real fur would not be entering my house. And I wouldn’t give a shiny shit what an 8yo wanted involving real fur. Straight up tell him what this involves and why it’s utterly inappropriate.

TheWildZebra · Today 13:29

Peonies12 · Today 12:43

Absolutely not. Also it’s rarely cold enough to need one of their coats in the UK, he won’t wear it

💯 this! I have a CG from my time in the arctic and I have never once in the 10 years I’ve been back had reason to wear it in the UK. too too hot.

OP - could you look at one of the gilets instead? (I would also echo other posters about designer brands and it because rather ikk for an 8 year old wearing them)

MeltyMomenrs · Today 13:29

ThisBirdOnThatRoof · Today 13:05

Not if you watch it in bits with him and chat it through. And watch it first. You could even find another one with children his age going on hunts, and talk about how he feels.

Sitting with discomfort and learning about the world is part of his moral education. It isn't trauma.

This.

wrinklycactus · Today 13:30

Umm he's 8 years old. You say no, you're not having that.

Why would you support animal cruelty to appease an 8 year old?

heathspeedwell · Today 13:31

No. Of course not.

i wouldn't want to support a brand that used real fur in any of their products.

Well it's less ludicrous to spend £500 on an item of clothing if you're not going to grow out of it in a year. 😂

DancingNotDrowning · Today 13:35

I have far more of an issue with an 8 year old having his heart set on a four figure item of clothing than I do with that item of clothing being trimmed in fur.

FlatErica · Today 13:35

No.

Itsseweasy · Today 13:36

Absolutely not. Show him some videos of fur farms instead.

mindutopia · Today 13:37

No, I wouldn’t buy anyone a coat with fur and I’m not even particularly all vegan-y about stuff. More I wouldn’t buy a stupid expensive coat for an 8 year old because it lasts like 3 months.

AstonUniversityPotholeDepartment · Today 13:38

Absolutely not. When I was eight years old, I would have refused to wear fur if it was offered to me, never mind demanded it. I'd be very disappointed in a child who wanted real fur.

Honestly, I absolutely adored faux fur, but I was double-checking labels in primary school to confirm that whatever piece of tat I wanted was fake.
