Would you buy an eight-year-old a coat with real fur trim?

My son, who’s 8, has his heart set on a Canada Goose coat with the real fur trim that we found for a good price on ebay for his birthday because all his friends have them and he thinks it’s the coolest thing .. I get the practicality, they’re warm and tough, but I’m really uneasy about the idea of him wearing real fur, especially coyote fur, which I’ve heard can involve pretty cruel trapping methods....

I don’t want to shut him down completely and make it a big fight, but I also don’t want to support something that feels wrong. Has anyone here let their child wear real fur? How did you explain it to them, or how did you steer them toward a faux option without it becoming a battle? He said the faux option looks terrible, which I do agree! Will it survive playground life without getting stolen?

Definitely dont get him anything with real fur, show him some you tube videos of where it comes from perhaps and teach him why real fur is not ok.

Parker231 · Today 12:19

No - he’s 8. He doesn’t need a high value branded item and definitely not one with any fur.

Notquitethetruth · Today 12:20

No. Absolutely not.

No - the use of fur is barbaric, and there are serious questions over down too as it's definitely not always harvested ethically.

Is he aware of what happens to the animals?

I wouldn't give 2 hoots if my 8 year old thought faux fur didn't look as good as real tbh - he's a child.

I would have explained as soon as it was mentioned that it’s not right to buy real fur, age appropriately of course but 8 year olds are able to understand. The fact you didn’t shut it down immediately will only lead to his further disappointment. It’s far easier when your kid says ‘oh I really like these coats’ to say ‘oh yes they look lovely but they are made using real fur, that’s not ok because…’.

ThisBirdOnThatRoof · Today 12:25

No, and he is old enough to see a video on how it is made. So long as you watch it with him, chat to him about it in the following days, and lead him to compassion rather than disgust or fear. Maybe follow up with a summer visit to a child friendly animal sanctuary?

It's an interesting one - hunting for sport or fur is abhorrent (which I think most would agree)
But if the animal has been killed for meat then I personally don't see an issue with also using the fur. Not sure who's eating coyote though

FunMustard · Today 12:27

If I was opposed to the fur trade, I'd educate myself on where the fur is coming from and then educate my child before I made a decision. Genuinely - I'm not being snarky, and I'm saying this with no knowledge of the brand or anything else.

I wouldn't consider one of these anyway, I don't think they're needed in this country and I wouldn't spend that much (unless it's like £20 or something) on a coat for an 8 year old anyway.

Between 4 to 12 would be the right age to learn tracking skills and 8 or 10 to be taken on the hunt, in traditional societies including some First Nations today.

Teach him about the interconnection of these animals' lives and his.

I wonder how many of these posters would say the same about leather handbags, belts and shoes..

To the people saying I should show him a video on how its made, won't that just traumatize him rather than solve any problem??

Then just talk to him. It’s really easy.

No, I wouldn’t buy fur full stop. When my kids are adults/paying they can make that decision, but while they are dependent on me, nope.

I’m a meat eater, it is normal for humans to eat meat imo, although I know some choose to be veggies and good for them. I believe leather is using what would otherwise be thrown away, so I’m fine with leather. Personally I could not wear real fur as I don’t think it is justifiable.

I do not think 8 year olds should be wearing expensive designer goods as (1) it will impede the kind of “muck about and get dirty” play 8 year olds boys should be having imo (2) he’ll grow out of it quickly (3) I would hate an 8 year old to be aspiring to this.

Sorry, you did ask.
