Would you buy an eight-year-old a coat with real fur trim?

My son, who’s 8, has his heart set on a Canada Goose coat with the real fur trim that we found for a good price on ebay for his birthday because all his friends have them and he thinks it’s the coolest thing .. I get the practicality, they’re warm and tough, but I’m really uneasy about the idea of him wearing real fur, especially coyote fur, which I’ve heard can involve pretty cruel trapping methods....

I don’t want to shut him down completely and make it a big fight, but I also don’t want to support something that feels wrong. Has anyone here let their child wear real fur? How did you explain it to them, or how did you steer them toward a faux option without it becoming a battle? He said the faux option looks terrible, which I do agree! Will it survive playground life without getting stolen?

Exactly - I bet most of his friends have fake ones whether they know it or not. They wouldn’t know the difference at 8.

BigBrownBoogyingBear · Today 12:38

No. Wearing real fur in this country/climate is totally unnecessary as well as unethical.

From a practical POV, the coat won't be easily washable. So not practical for a child who'll be playing out and getting dirty. My sister bought her son a Montriex coat, not realising it was down-filled and not machine washable. She sent it back!

hellospring26 · Today 12:38

No I wouldn’t. Unless it fake. What’s a ‘good price’?

Definitely dont get him anything with real fur, show him some you tube videos of where it comes from perhaps and teach him why real fur is not ok.

Maybe show him some videos of the meat and dairy industry too and teach him why he should be vegan?

Your 8 year old wants a Canada goose??? What the hellyyyyy

Highlighta · Today 12:41

Does he really need a real Canada Goose jacket though?

He wants one because his friends have one.
Chances are, that his friends ones are fake.

I think that if you feel it is important for him to fit in and wear all the same clothing (issue 1), then you must decide if you would rather buy him real fur (issue 2) or a fake version (issue 3).

Most likely it lost in no time at school or playground. If it isn't he will properly outgrow it in a year.
Few 8 yo have a coat like this. His friends' will be fake. Or this family are based in a very affluent area.

To the people saying I should show him a video on how its made, won't that just traumatize him rather than solve any problem??

We used to get shown horrible videos about whale flencing and seal clubbing and vivisection and fur ones too as kids. Some wacky primary school that was. It does show you the reality of it and if you want to wear fur he should know how it's made.

Lordofmyflies · Today 12:42

Not a chance.
Its ethically wrong to wear fur.
Its ethically wrong to support a company that kills birds for fashion items.
We dont always get what we want!
He's 8. You advocate for him and tell him he cannot have the coat due to these reasons and the cost. Simple.

lol traumatise him? So what? Maybe he needs to be “traumatised” to understand what the animals endure. He will survive unlike the foxes.

PGmicstand · Today 12:43

No.
Fur is cruel. I don't care how 'cool' people think it is. I've explained to my DC about this and they fully understand.

And the chances are it will be stolen (lost) as no child can wear such a heavy jacket all day in the UK

Peonies12 · Today 12:43

Absolutely not. Also it’s rarely cold enough to need one of their coats in the UK, he won’t wear it

PeoniesAreMyFavouriteFlowers · Today 12:44

Nope. What for?

hellopartypeople · Today 12:44

If you live in Yakutia etc then absolutly yes

otherwise no

WhatATimeToBeAlive · Today 12:45

Absolutely not. I didn't think they were supposed to use real fur these days? It's unnecessary and cruel.

DisplayPurposesOnly · Today 12:45

I would never buy real fur, for anyone. I would expect to be able to explain that to any child of mine.

I understand that Canada Goose use fake fur for some items. Id look for one of those as a compromise.

I’m a meat eater, it is normal for humans to eat meat imo, although I know some choose to be veggies and good for them. I believe leather is using what would otherwise be thrown away, so I’m fine with leather. Personally I could not wear real fur as I don’t think it is justifiable.

I do not think 8 year olds should be wearing expensive designer goods as (1) it will impede the kind of “muck about and get dirty” play 8 year olds boys should be having imo (2) he’ll grow out of it quickly (3) I would hate an 8 year old to be aspiring to this.

Sorry, you did ask.

No need to apologise, like I said in my earlier response it's an interesting topic, and you make a good point

Whatagooddog · Today 12:46

Absolutely not - it's an awful brand, extremely cruel regarding pulling out of feathers from live birds too.

If he's 8 with such demands already, then he's old enough to be taught the reality of this.

Or just tell him 'no.'

I'm nearly 70. When I was a child in the early 60's it was fashionable for little girls to have coats with fur trimmed collars and matching muffs (that is to say hand warmers)! My mum was very advanced for her time and she explained to me the cruelty of the fur trade and why wearing real fur was wrong and unnecessary. "Age appropriate" explanations weren't really a huge thing back then, so although she wasn't ridiculously over the top, she told it pretty much like it was. I no doubt would have come to the same conclusion eventually, but I'm forever grateful to my mum for setting me on the right path with this and so many other issues.

It should solve the problem of him asking for fur.

Tryagain26 · Today 12:47

No definitely not and I would tell him.why.

PinkiePipe · Today 12:47

Revolting. Absolutely not.

MyEasterBonnet · Today 12:49

No. My morals are far more important than what 8 year olds currently think is trendy. They wouldn’t care about how things are made, they just want what others have. It’s up to the parent to make those decisions.
