Do grey blending services really need to cost thousands?

I am getting aggressively marketing grey blending services.

I am tempted, but the prices! A place near me - you have to go in with 3 months of regrowth roots. And then go.on a journey of 3-6 months, during which you will be transformed to a low maintenance client embracing your greys.

It costs over £7800! For 3-6 months (unlimited appointments during this time, but suppose she/you are busy?)

I have all over tint brunette roots every 6 weeks. It looks really warm and goes brassy, particularly as I swim.

U want to get away from this, and embrace long her with salt and pepper.... Inspiration pics attaxhdd

do I need to pay thousands and thousands to get going?

There will always be people saying 'just grow it out' but tbh I wasn't prepared to look a mess (in my eyes, other people might not mind it on themselves) for months on end and cutting/shaving it all off was not an option.
My hairdresser got me from the terrible two tone dark brown/grey with a massively obviously demarcation line to the second photo in one visit. Took nearly five hours and about £150 but I'm very happy with the result.
I agree I don't know where the 7k type figures come from!

That’s brilliant. And exactly what I’m hoping to do. I’m still very dark at the back and I still want to feel like a brunette, so I’m predicting I’ll have some dark lowlights for dimension.

PuppyMonkey · 26/05/2026 09:28

@MargotLovesTom that looks brilliant.

I think OP needs to first grow out an inch or two to see how the grey is going to emerge. I’m like a PP and my natural grey came out steely grey through my dark brown dyed hair. Not while like Margot’s. So I just thought sod it and let it grow out naturally. It honestly didn’t look to bad as the grey came from not only the top, but the bottom, the sides etc so it did look like highlights blended in. Just see how you go first OP and then you can get hairdresser help if you need it.

Seven grand though, blimey. I’d have just carried on dying it brown every week forever, would be cheaper.

This looks great and exactly the kind of price I’d expect, I think anyone paying thousands is being ripped off.

Ah, now £150 and this result is a different thing altogether than what's mentioned in the OP.
This I'd pay for, the first, not a chance.
Moot point now really as I've grown mine out and love it, but your hair also looks lovely.

ShanghaiDiva · 26/05/2026 10:42

@MargotLovesTom - your hair looks fabulous!

CatServant1 · 27/05/2026 11:45

@MargotLovesTom Your hair looks great. I admit that I did grow mine out when I had far less grey/white than you (although there was a significant amount). I don't think I'd have wanted to grow mine out in your position. I had a white streak at the front and it really showed through the dye though, so I got fed up.

I need the name of your hairdresser, it looks fab!

I’ve started dyeing my own hair from supermarket good quality brands in the last month and I wish I’d started 10 years and saved thousands (sorry hairdressers!). My mum recently has done the same too.

LaurenciaLamb · 27/05/2026 14:20

DelphiniumBlue · 25/05/2026 15:16

I had lowlights to blend the roots in, I think about 3 or 4 appointments over a year. It was about 120 pounds a time, which I thought was very expensive! Quite a well known salon in London. So yes, several thousand does sound exorbitant.

I did similar but in a (much!) cheaper part of the country. I did have to change hairdressers as my old one wasn’t keen on doing it as she thought I wouldn’t like it. But I love it!

yourewrongthenyoureright · 27/05/2026 14:22

ShanghaiDiva · 25/05/2026 13:23

This ‘journey’ sounds incredibly expensive.
My journey: grow out roots for three months, have hair cut short, grow hair and the blending will happen by itself!

This is my plan. I’m two months in. Don’t mind it at all.

hahabahbag · 27/05/2026 14:25

Work out your natural colour now and dye your hair to that colour.

im not dying mine at all and its going white gradually. If you are reading this before you go grey seriously consider not starting with colour

TheignT · 27/05/2026 14:30

I'm in my 70s, was a red head and now it's battleship grey. I wish it would go silvery or white. I'm giving up hope of it happening.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 27/05/2026 15:36

I'm white at the sides, dark at the back and a steely grey in the front. I have the back and sides shaved to a No 2 and the top just cut in very short. Keeping it short means it never has chance to lose condition too badly. I have just grown it for six months as I'm having it coloured for a wedding - after that it's all coming off again.

I can't be bothered with expense and faff.

Secretseverywhere · 27/05/2026 15:47

I’d feel tempted too sadly I’m poor and cut my own hair / the odd box dye. I would say that stopping chlorine getting at your hair staves off brassiness. Clairol version of glaze coats the hair and I find will last two- three pool trips before needing redone. Alternatively Sun bum do a cheaper version of swim cap which works as well.
