Do grey blending services really need to cost thousands?

Thegreyladyoflondon · 25/05/2026 13:07

I am getting aggressively marketing grey blending services.

I am tempted, but the prices! A place near me - you have to go in with 3 months of regrowth roots. And then go.on a journey of 3-6 months, during which you will be transformed to a low maintenance client embracing your greys.

It costs over £7800! For 3-6 months (unlimited appointments during this time, but suppose she/you are busy?)

I have all over tint brunette roots every 6 weeks. It looks really warm and goes brassy, particularly as I swim.

U want to get away from this, and embrace long her with salt and pepper.... Inspiration pics attaxhdd

do I need to pay thousands and thousands to get going?

Yep I’m delighted with mine, have went from appts every 6 weeks to 3 times a year.

How anyone could charge thousands, let alone pay it is a whole world to the one I live in

My hair has never been in such good condition!

The one I saw on Instagram said please do not get in touch if you can’t afford the process.
Charming 🤣

I wonder if it's the same one who said posted: "It's takes the same amount of energy to sell a £7k grey root blend as a £70 root tint & cut… mic drop."

Ugh.

MakeMineAMilkyTea · 25/05/2026 15:56

Wow!!!! That’s insane! My grey journey took me 18ish months. Couple of appointments to strip my hair and dye it close to my natural colour and then monthly for a toner and a hair cut every few months to cut my hair so we could get rid of the dye. Cost maybe £800 over the 18 months .

Grey blending is the new emperor's clothes IMO. Hairdressers charging thousands for strategically placed grey highlights is insane. You just need to bite the bullet and let it grow. I'm a year in and I love my natural silver sparkles. The ends are a bit orangey from old dye, but I just get regular trims.

I have my own sparkly silver highlights too!

Passingthrough123 · 25/05/2026 16:10

What really pisses me off about grey blending is that it's just another way to manipulate women's insecurities about their appearance and in particular ageing. I mean, god forbid we let our grey hairs sprout. Pack us off to the care home, forthwith! 🙄

Anyone who wants to be inspired by women letting their grey come in naturally should look up the hashtag #silversisters on Instagram. The women posting are proof you don't need to spend ££££s to look amazing with grey hair!

But it is about letting your 'grey hairs sprout', just in a much more expensive fashion!

MightyGoldBear · 25/05/2026 16:20

I've had grey blending done and it was £80. Now I only need to go every 3 or 4 months and that's more for a cut. My greys now look like highlights. So pleased to be released from the regular appointments or lengthy salon time.

Ethelspagetti · 25/05/2026 16:22

TheShoeLady · 25/05/2026 13:49

I shaved my head. Cost nothing and made last summers heatwave much more bearable.

Now have 4 inches of lovely good-condition totally grey hair and wishing I could shave it all off again! 🥵

Nearly £8k is ridiculous but then I have never paid more than £40 for a hair cut and coloured it myself for £5 up until embracing the grey so I’m probably not their target market!

I’d love to shave mine off and grow out my natural colour! But I couldn’t possibly as I have a large round face with a very flat back of the head! You’re very brave! I’ve already decided that July’s hair appointment will be my last head of foils. I’ve looked into blending and the prices are out of this world! I’m going to grow mine out and take some hair vitamins, hopefully they’ll make my hair grow faster!

Huckleberries · 25/05/2026 16:22

CatServant1 · 25/05/2026 14:48

Wow. That's costly. I just let my dye grow out. It was fine and I ended up with hair rather like your pictures. Much cheaper.

That's amazing, though

Most of us wouldn't have it all blending so softly

Passingthrough123 · 25/05/2026 16:23

MargotLovesTom · 25/05/2026 16:18

I get what you mean, except it's not embracing the sprouting, it's blending the sprouting to cover it up as though it's an embarrassment, to make it look like highlights. Yet on a practical level it's more work, because those dyed greys need regular toners to avoid going brassy just like normal highlights. It's just more faff at the hairdresser's and your bank account emptied for the effort.

andnowwhatdowedo · 25/05/2026 16:29

Sounds like a lot of nonsense not to mention a rip off. Paying a few hundred for maintaining an excellent short cut by a stylist who understands your hair, would work better. Then you can grow it again if you want after the artificial colour is gone.

Girlwithavibe · 25/05/2026 16:30

There con artists !!
Or because there good stylists. They can get away with it lol (stylist here )
Anyone with good hair colour knowledge wud be able to do this just using regular appointments if u had limitless appointments your hair wud end up being fried !
It's part of the industry that literally pisses me off !! Instead of having your bread and butter clients there being greedy for more money less clients if they were passionate about hair they would just be a good stylist with a full column of clients !

thedevilinablackdress · 25/05/2026 16:33

Those don't even look like real people in the OP.

SoScarletItWas · 25/05/2026 16:33

It’s matching the sprouting. They need the regrowth to see what your grey pattern is. You’ll be in the salon for six to eight hours while they meticulously weave and lift and tone the lengths of your hair to match the grey pattern. Basically you walk in with solid colour dye and out with your own grey pattern - it fast forwards months/years of growing it naturally over time.

But WHY it costs £7k I can’t fathom. It’s still highlights, albeit very carefully placed ones. Yes it’s a lot more time. But if standard highlights is £120, it’s not like you’ll go 58 times to hit the £7k mark, is it?!

@Thegreyladyoflondon I want to wake up with no dye and my natural hair looking exactly like your second inspo pic. It would. I know it. At the moment I colour it with a semi permanent auburn but my plan is to colour it with a semi perm ash brown (my natural) to match the tone - and then let it go and embrace the grow-out process. Not yet. But that’s my plan.

If it was getting me down I would ask my current hairdresser to lift and tone the bits at the front all down the lengths. Then I won’t be able to see what’s going on with the rest of it and can pretend it’s all as neat and I’ll still have my £7k 🤣

Neurodiversitydoctor · 25/05/2026 16:34

GardenCovent · 25/05/2026 15:31

I got mine done, it took about 4 appointments in total and was approx £120 each appt so that figure seems ridiculous

This I have been doing it for 9 months, very happy with it will try to find picture.

Sunshine99999 · 25/05/2026 16:35

These ‘journeys’ are a marketing con. That’s clear enough to see from the insta accounts of some of the ‘experts’ who post aimed at customers and also other hairdressers, offering their training so they too can rip people off.

My hairdresser of 13 years has done grey blending on me. The first appt took 5 hours and cost me £300. It’s been 3 months and I can’t see the regrowth line at all. I’m going back in a few weeks for the 2nd appt but to be honest, if it weren’t for a section at the front that needs work due to it being nearly completely white, I wouldn’t bother as I’m happy with growing the grey out from this position.

ManyShapesOfPasta · 25/05/2026 16:41

Jeez, I just grew mine out, cost £0.

Pattygonia · 25/05/2026 16:50

I’m growing mine out fairly naturally - have been using Plantur Brown colour depositing shampoo as apparently that just washes/fades out so once the old box dye hair has finally grown out I can just stop using it.
Have been happy with it for last 9 months or so but think it’s starting to look a bit too orange/blonde now and am not quite there with the length. Have started using Indola Colour Mousse in a dark ash as a toner and am happy so far - have stopped the Plantur and think it looks pretty natural Would be interested to hear if anyone else has had good results with Indola mousse

JillThePlantKiller · 25/05/2026 17:10

I can see how it could be worth it IF your hair looked good throughout the process, and you’re in a job where presentation is a priority.

But 3 months regrowth is going to look bad. At that stage you might as well cut it short, or embrace hats for a while. I did both - bobbed it because I don’t have the face for a pixie cut, and then went for a tighter bob for a while.

The bit no one told me was how fabulous the condition of my hair would be when I stopped colouring it. It looks better, is easier to manage and only costs the price of my shampoo and conditioner.

Thegreyladyoflondon · 25/05/2026 22:20

Its marketed at CEOs and professional ladies. (Rich ones aka)

I asked chat gpt to tell me what to ask my stylist for so I might give it a go without a hype social media stylist.

Aiming to have some greys, but keep them mixed with my natural and lowlights and highlights.

Last box dye for me was for my works Xmas do in 2019. Cue COVID, CBA-ness, disability/illness where I came to the conclusion cutting my hair short was better for my mental health than living with an un-brushed, un-styled greasy mess and voila, my hairdresser is so chuffed with my natural highlights and I love them!!

GreyRooted · 25/05/2026 22:44

I got babylights through mine to blend the demarcation line and then went a few months with a bit of a two tone effect but it wasn’t bad. Now I have a head full of shiny silver hair, which I LOVE!

Paperbagswag · 25/05/2026 22:45

I had some blending, a one off, first and last time for about £280. It was because my grey grew in like Cruella initially. After the blending it was good but tbh the texture was not as manageable as my natural hair so I’m glad now it’s evened out and the last of the salon blending is gone. My natural grey has a lovely texture so I splash out a bit for a fancy stylist who cuts it in a way that really makes the greys sparkle.
