Shorts for sports but not short shorts.

I would rather not wear shorts, but this time of year I just get too hot. Every year I try looking for shorts but they are either short shorts or cycling shorts. But are there any shorts out there: Slightly looser; Slightly longer? At the moment I'm using some absolutely horrendous shorts of my DH 😂. They are for doing a sports activity in, so not looking for stylish, wearing out shorts.

Try those shorts that look like a tennis skirt. They are more "airy" and flattering imo.

Also looking for shorts that aren’t short shorts and aren’t moulded to my arse crack, I saw some nice pink ones in the window of sweaty Betty yesterday that looked like they had the floaty layer over the top of them which I’m annoyed that I didn’t go in and look at now.

Try basketball shorts, boxing shorts or maybe football shorts. If you need to carry a house key in them some improvisation will be required, but otherwise you can have yourself a pair of long, loose shorts suitable for sport, cut for the female shape and for a very reasonable price.

How about a skort?

dudsville · 24/05/2026 22:23

Culottes?

Kaggi9 · 24/05/2026 22:25

I have the longer Halara shorts - wicking, stretchy material and cycling shorts under proper shorts but very cool. They’re great!

meganorks · 25/05/2026 23:43

Thanks for the options - I will take a look. I don't think skort or culottes would work with the activity. And I can't imagine i would be willing to pay sweaty Betty prices! But I will look.

Ronhill and Helly Hansen both do proper longer, looser women’s running shorts. They also do running skirts and skorts. Skirts and skorts are a big thing in the ultra trail running world, popularised by the great Emilie Forsberg.

I won't be running! Activity is climbing hence I don't think skorts/culottes would work - will just look odd and get in the way for the harness

After looking for aaaaages last year I ended up with a pair from Cotton Traders. They are cotton jersey, so not super lightweight or 'technical' or particularly lovely. But they are a) shorts and b) comfortable.

Have you looked at the climbing brands like Mammut, Arc’teryx and Mountain Equipment? Lots of options.

Yeah good shout. I should try climbing brands. I think i have looked before for vests with no joy.
