Shoulder straps always too big on tops - help!

Hi everyone

Can anyone help me with a problem I constantly have with clothes? The straps are always too long and armholes too big. I'm not particularly petite but have small shoulders and largish bust. I get dresses and smarter tops altered but I desperately need basic vests like these

But they are all too low cut and too low under the arms. I'm at a point where I would pay to get them altered but can you even alter jersey vest tops? I suppose I'm asking

  1. Can tops like these be altered by a dressmaker?
  2. Can anyone recommend vests like the above with small armholes/short straps?

I can't be the only person with this problem surely but I am the only one of my friends with this problem!

Thanks

I have in the past, unpicked the seams on the shoulders cut a small amount off and resewn. It works fine for stopping the tops being too low cut and the straps falling down.
Not sure it's the answer for too big arm holes.
I would be looking for something with a cap sleeve or similar, if you are wearing them without anything over the top.

I have the same problem because I'm short and fat with a large bust but tiny shoulders.
I just sew a fold into the strap. That also pulls the arm holes in and makes them smaller.

thank you both - yes it would also solve the armhole problem. I can't sew at all and it's just annoying to have to pay more than the vests cost on alterations. However, I think I will bulk buy and get a load done at once

I'm similar as I have one shoulder lower than the other.
I try on every vest top I see. Some are great ,others terrible and some are OK until washed.
So frustrating, I'm currently looking for some way of attaching the straps to my bra straps.

ooh @omgitchiness that I can help with. You sew a tiny loop of ribbon with a small popper on each end and clip the strap around your bra strap. I can't sew but my mum has done this for me and so has the women at the drycleaners!

Even though you say you are not particulary petite a petite vest might work for you, New look is surprisingly good at the moment.

thanks @hexsnidgett
I am 5ft 7 so had never considered petite as don't want cropped but have a very short torso and long legs so that might work!
