Cropped jeans: what length?

I’m sure this is a much asked question but what length would you expect crop jeans to be?

I’m 5ft 4 and size 12 and I bought some jeans to try. They are Next brand and claim to be slim cropped jeans. I got a 12 regular and a 12 petite. The 12 regular hit my ankle bottoms iyswim and the 12 petite are more like mid to low calf. I would call the regular ankle grazer and the petite to me would be cropped. Whereas ones just below my knee to top calf I would call capri.

I was intrigued because the regular looked too long but on photos of the models wearing they look like ankle grazer but say crop.

I’m probably over thinking this but just wondering if there’s a consensus.

This is the length I like in an ankle grazer Jean. I just can’t find any mid rise. I saw some in Next high I bought but they do what jeans do which is get bigger as the day goes on. At the end of the day, without a belt, they’d slide off.

I’d call the ankle grazer cropped. It’s the only cropped I would wear. Anything else looks dated and frumpy.

Do you think the picture of the newlook model they look short? it could be as she's not standing

I haven't brought any jeans from next for a couple of years, as like you said they grow in the day and then are too big, I do have the wide leg pull on jeans, I think they call them joggers but they are more like a jean at £29 they are great, but I couldn't get another colour to fit like the black do. They do a lovely dark blue but unfortunately in the same size as the 12 short in black I have, they were smaller on the waist.

Hmm, in gym leggings I would expect cropped to mean mid calf, and ankle grazer to be called 7/8, but in trousers anything from ankle to a couple of inches above I would call cropped, and above mid calf capri. I suppose that gives more leeway for different leg lengths- some 7/8ths are full length on me!

I don’t understand the appeal of cropped trousers of any sort. IMO they flatter absolutely nobody.

Well I’ve decided I’m not happy with either of them and will send them back. But I’ve ordered other ones to try from monsoon and Mango.

My main imperative is to not look like they’re accidentally too short. But I might end up agreeing with @AppleDumplingWithCustard! And they are, at best, difficult to get right depending on one’s height.

Yeah I’ve seen M&S pushing this Carolyn Bessette Kennedy retro 90s look with kick flare cropped jeans which I wasn’t a major fan of at the time.
