How much effort do you make for the school run?

WhatsYourFlex · 15/05/2026 23:21

How ready do you get to do the school run? Assuming you are going back home afterwards (I WFH).

As in which of the following do you do?

Shower
Dress in something better than leggings
Hair
Make up
etc

I tend to be quite minimal - I’m always dressed in proper clean clothes (not PJs!) but beyond that I don't make much effort.

None at all.

If I’m going to the office that day, I’m dressed for work (smart, make up).

If I’m not, I look pretty scruffy.

CaffeinatedSeagull · 16/05/2026 08:35

As a dad who does all the nursery runs and wfhs full time my go to is jeans, plaid shirt and my natural slightly scruffy look!

I generally don’t think there needs to be much effort made by either sex for it… and if there is, who are you trying to impress? There’s no need to be an Amanda about it and project a ‘Soha’ lifestyle.

Ohdearnotthisagain · 16/05/2026 11:09

Shower, brush my hair and teeth, throw on leggings or summer equivalent. I couldn’t give a shit what other parents think of me on the school run!

Meeeeeeow · 16/05/2026 11:12

I’m always in the car so I might chuck a bit of foundation on but at best it’s a pair of sunnies and a hoodie/joggers 😂 I just go back home to work

SilenceInside · 16/05/2026 11:14

Shower and dress in something better than leggings - every day. I WFH but prefer to be dressed for a smart casual workplace regardless.

Hair, well I do what I always do which is wash it and dry it, which is all it needs.

Make up - never wear it, so no.

Marmaladeisorange · 16/05/2026 11:21

On my non working days I rarely come home straight after the school run so hair, makeup, clean clothes, perfume. Not for the school run but for the rest of my day. I never go out without doing my hair and make up I just like to feel my best and feel more comfortable like that!

Not trying to impress anyone. Just how I would leave the house for any other activity.

henlake7 · 16/05/2026 14:25

I dont have kids but morning dog walk coincides with school run!
I just chuck on a sports bra, joggers/leggings and oversized sweatshirt/t shirt and ugly boots.
Then its hair brushed, teeth cleaned and out the door.
I exercise in the morning so I dont see the point doing too much beforehand, this is a very casual area anyways so nobody really dresses up.

Speakofthedevil · 16/05/2026 14:56

Same as everything else. I never wear leggings, track suits and similar when out, doesn't matter where 'out'. I dress smart, in high-quality, well-cut clothes that are clean, ironed, and not worn out/bobbly. I always change when I go out, and change back to my home clothes when I'm back. Doesn't matter where I'm going, the corner shop or school run. I respect myself and wouldn't be seen dead in leggings and other slobby shit like that. I don't like to look like I crawled out of a dumpster.

BlueShoeGlue · 16/05/2026 15:01

I’m 6 months postpartum with 2 school aged dc. For me as long as I’m washed, clean brushed hair, brushed teeth, moisturise my face, deodorant, bit of perfume, eyebrows and mascara as minimum for makeup.
clothes- as long as their clean that’s fine by me. it’s usually just leggings, top, cardigan and trainers or sandals. Very boring and basic.

Gigglydancybox · 16/05/2026 15:13

Teeth brushed, face washed, clothes on. I don’t work so do t bother with makeup unless I’m going out socialising. I have curly hair which I tied up in bed and as I hardly move it doesn’t need anything done in the morning. That’s it.

Grammarninja · 16/05/2026 15:18

Quick body shower, deodorant, facial cleansing wipe, spf moisturiser, fingers through my hair and tied up. Teeth brushed. Leggings and a top. Bra sometimes doesn't make it on. 15 mins with child harassing me at every point. Job done.

CatsandSun · 16/05/2026 15:26

I have a bath before bed, and have a quick wash every morning, takes
5 minutes.
Hair styled in either an up do or straightened, takes me 5/10 minutes.
Makeup, takes me 5/10 minutes.
I choose my clothes for the week every Sun and make sure they are out/ironed ready to chuck on.

RampantIvy · 16/05/2026 15:28

Shower - usually the night before
Dress in something better than leggings - Yes
Hair - brushed
Make up - Just for the school run? No. If going on to work afterwards, yes

ithinkilikethislittlelife · 16/05/2026 15:30

School run or staying at home my routine is the same. Shower and shave my armpits. Moisturise. Blow dry my hair. Get dressed usually smart/casual. Jeans and a shirt and trainers sort of thing. Make up. If it’s a weekend and my husband is at home I can stay in my pjs until about 10 but by then I am itching to shower and get dressed as my routine is so ingrained 🤷🏻‍♀️

Pigtailsandall · 16/05/2026 15:31

Honestly, my routine is the same every day regardless of what I do. DH does most drop-offs anyway, but even if I do one, it wouldn't change my routine. I tend to shower last thing in the evening so in the morning I do my skincare routine, put in hair oil (curly, so it's never "styled"), brush teeth and put on a little makeup (tinted moisturiser, eye brow pen, mascara and blush). Put on earrings. I dress nicely but simply (like jeans and a nice t-shirt, or flowy trousers and blouse).

We do get up early so I'm never generally rushing, and we live close to the school.

user593 · 16/05/2026 15:36

Shower, brush my teeth, dress, jewellery and very occasionally makeup. I’m a SAHM so don’t have to go on to work. If I did I’d make more of an effort.

SarahAndQuack · 16/05/2026 15:39

I live next door to the school in a house where the living room windows open straight onto the pavement - I am under no illusions about how much of my life is visible! Grin I've done the school run in everything from mud-caked work gear to heels and smart clothes to waving DD out of the door in my dressing gown when I'm ill.

No one cares.

notacooldad · 16/05/2026 15:41

*Shower
Dress in something better than leggings
Hair
Make up
etc

Its a while since ive done a school run but doing that was normal, getting ready to go through the door stuff.
Even if im staying in all day by myself, that's done.

It doesn't take long to put a bit of tinted moisturiser blush and lippy on, if you wear it.
Its as easy to put a decent dress, trousers, jeans or skirt on as it us to put leggings on.

I seriously wouldn't leave the house in leggings unless I was going to pilates.
The house would have to have to be on fire before I left in pjs! 😆 🤣

CaptainCalm · 16/05/2026 15:41

Shower - always
Dress in something better than leggings - Always, I never wear leggings apart from for sport and don’t feel good unless I’m dressed vaguely nicely.
Hair - always washed and blow dried, sometimes styled
Make up - most of the time but not too much

The above what I would do any day, irrespective of what I was doing.

BringBackCatsEyes · 16/05/2026 15:42

Anything goes - running kit, either before or after run.
Post swim (may not have knickers on).
Work clothes - jeans etc (academia -no one cares).
Smarter clothes - attending meetings, conference.

harrietm87 · 16/05/2026 15:50

I cycle to drop off and then come home and get ready after that (school in opposite direction to work) so make less than zero effort for the school run - just pull
on some leggings and coat, have a helmet on so don’t do hair. I have to dress very smartly/formally for work so on the rare occasions when I’ve done drop
off in my work clothes people have barely recognised me!

ERthree · 16/05/2026 16:00

I used to drop mine off in my uniform and to be honest i wouldn't have a clue what the rest of the mums wore, whether they had make up on, if they had brushed their hair or had matching shoes. Does anyone really get their knickers in a twist over what the rest wear at the school gate ? We are not teenagers anymore, we are grown mature women.

RampantIvy · 16/05/2026 16:08

Only on mumsnet.

GreenCaterpillarOnALeaf · 16/05/2026 16:17

I start work after and I’m a Maths tutor so most days I’m pretty much done up. I normally teach in a bit of make up, jeans and jumper - students sometimes joke “oh another green jumper” because it’s almost always green… guilty. On days I’m not working (Wednesday Thursday are my weekends) I normally do something or go and see my dad or my mum so I do tend to get dressed (especially if it’s my mum she will rag on me if I’m a scruff).

If I could get away with it I’d do it in my PJs. Clean PJs, but I would. Sometimes if I’m not doing anything an it’s my day off, hair up, hat and joggies. I have eyelash extensions and my eyebrows are dyed so I guess I still look like I have make up on.
