Jacket or something to go with this please?

I've just received this dress and I like it, but it needs something over it to break up the solid block of blue.
DH and I attend semi formal evening events with a club he is a member of quite regularly and mainly attended by the same people, so I need quite a few dresses, and so don't usually spend a lot!
DH wears black tie.
Something lightweight as these events are usually indoors, suitable for evening wear.
I'm 5'6" size 18 and "mature!"
Thanks x

Thats a lovely dress! Personally as a fellow ‘mature’ woman I have found jackets over dresses adds years!

how about a nice light shawl in summer and a cashmere one for winter?

Raera · 11/05/2026 18:12

Thanks for your input and I understand your view.
I find wraps and shawls awkward, yes it is a "me" problem, but they fall off, slip down and are generally annoying. Much prefer something with sleeves which stays where it's put.

Lovely dress. I'd go for a cropped white jacket with that.

PhaedraTwo · 11/05/2026 18:42

I don't think it does need breaking up that way. Try a spectacular piece of costume jewellery - a necklace or a brooch.

Raera · 11/05/2026 19:55

Thanks@ginasevern would you think white is evening wear? I would think more daytime?
Thanks @PhaedraTwo yes I have suitable pieces as suggested, but as "mature" I'd prefer some upper arm cover.
Sorry if I'm being picky!

It's a lovely dress, I think it'd be a shame to break it up with a jacket.

Sorry just seen your update. Not white, something cropped, but not bolero in black or navy velvet?

Crochet is having a bit of a moment. How about an open work shrug that would sit just around your shoulders. You could pin it in place with a nice brooch.

Ophy83 · 12/05/2026 09:34

It would be a shame to cover it up as the colour block and keyhole back detail are what make the dress striking. If it helps I doubt anyone else will have negative thoughts about your arms - maybe try it on and ask your dh or a friend for some feedback
