Which dress for the evening do of a wedding only?

I’ve been invited to a family member’s wedding reception, evening do only. I don’t think it’s overly formal. Which dress would you wear?

My plan is to wear it with some sandals and a matching bag, so not too dressy.

I think some people are being quite harsh. Only one I don't like is the orange one but I just genuinely don't like Orange.
In my opinion they are all suitable for an evening wedding do and if I had these options I definitely wouldn't be forking out for something I may never wear again.
Also, it's difficult to know what a dress will look like just from seeing it on a hanger. I'd personally plump for the polka dot.

Sainsbury’s has several copies of that style nobody’s child dress

Which one? The bow back?

They're all too informal for an evening do. They are only suitable for a casual garden party. If you have no sense of style (many don't, it's not a crime) put yourself into the hands of an assistant at a decent store: John Lewis or M&S

I get the feeling the evening bit is going to end up being a bit more like a garden party. I’ve ordered this dress from Vinted and I have high hopes!

That's lovely - I really like the back detail. Is it more teal than turquoise?

lol yes it may well be teal. Sort of a deep jewel tone maybe?

The polka dot is the nicest imo but best of a bad bunch

They're not really evening dresses more a picnic in the park or school run. Polka dot is the best.

NeelyOHara · 10/05/2026 16:47

The dress you have ordered is way better, nice work.

I’m now going to end up being the bested dressed in Milan cafes this summer 🤣

Excellent!👌

Ophir · 10/05/2026 16:51

None of the ones you posted are suitable for evening wedding guest, they look like summer day dresses

The green satin one is the best but I’d keep looking tbh

wellbruce · 10/05/2026 16:52

I like the pink and red one and I’ve no idea why people have to be so bitchy.

Unless there is a bouncer on the door denying entry to anyone who hasn’t met the dress code, I don’t see why it matters. Is anyone really going to care? ‘Suitable’ is subjective and op is wise to buy something she can wear again. I actually think they are all nice dresses and could easily be dressed up with heels and jewellery to look more formal.

It obviously matters to the op as she’s literally asked for opinions! On a style and beauty forum. Really weird response

Lomonald · 10/05/2026 16:57

The polka dot one is my favourite you have had some snippy replies op im not sure why pp think it is ok to be so obnoxious.

She asked ‘which dress’ not ‘are they suitable?’

My aim is to use something that can be dressed up a little for the wedding but suitable for the day as well. I don’t have the budget to drop £100s on a dress for one night. This is the last wedding in the family until my own, and I don’t really do formal events

Yes. Is that not the green satin one? That would work

Owly11 · 10/05/2026 17:01

The pink and red one is the best especially if you have a nice jacket to go over it. But it's hard to tell without seeing them on you.

My advice would be to pair the pink and red one with some nude heels and gold jewellery. Don’t go for flat sandals. A nude clutch would also go well with it. Do not skint yourself on something new and expensive just because MN strangers have told you they aren’t fancy enough, they are all nice dresses that could easily be dressed up if needed.

Ophir · 10/05/2026 17:04

Personally, I’d go to one of the supermarkets and pick up a nice dress cheaply

No, this is another one that I’ve found on Vinted (BNWT, but £40 instead of £135!), which I love

They look lovely and I think pp are harsh!! Love the bow on the nobody's child dress but equally think orange can look great.

All those people saying not suitable, what type of a dress would be?!?! Maybe mother of the bride style pastel suits, or slinky evening numbers (which op definitely doesn't want if she wants a lovely dress for swishing around Milan!)

Are you going to lake Como op? They'll look gorgeous out for dinner!
