Which dress for the evening do of a wedding only?

I’ve been invited to a family member’s wedding reception, evening do only. I don’t think it’s overly formal. Which dress would you wear?

My plan is to wear it with some sandals and a matching bag, so not too dressy.

I’ve just found the bow back nobody’s child dress on Vinted for £40, brand new with tags! It’s in turquoise but I think I have three contenders now - pink polka dot, green satin, and turquoise bow back.

They're all really nice, so it's about which one you feel best in.

Limp is exactly what I thought. They look like examples of the really depressing over worn, over washed can't be arsed ironing it, worst of Vinted.

Any need to be so bloody nasty?

I don’t really know how to find out what suits me?

Go for the colour you like.

@funksoulbrothers
Could you rent a dress for the evening?

What colouring are you? What kind of shades you you generally find most flattering?

It's really not worth it for an evening invitation. The pink polka dot is fine if OP wants to wear it.

I’m looking at some rentals now, I want a nice collection of dresses anyway as I do want to start dressing nicely anyway

I have no idea and I usually wear black and white 😂 I’ve quite traditional English rose colouring, I have dark brown hair and green eyes

Absolutely agree that I would not be wasting money on renting a dress for an evening event, or buying something I would not wear again.

The pink polka dot is fine and appropriate.

Then possibly the orange might not be for you? Perhaps pink or green?

Sidebeforeself · 10/05/2026 15:46

You like the pink polka dot , you feel good in it etc… so wear it! Unless you are just fancying something new ( sometimes I do that)

In which kind of venue will the Evening Reception be taking place, OP?

It’s just a local hotel near me. Not too upscale, so not a big fancy wedding. It’s a nice venue though

I think the pink or green will work. To be honest I want more nice dresses anyway so the only one I’ll return if I don’t like is the green satin one

If the polka dot one is from M&S it is really flimsy and see though in person - I returned it

It’s nobody’s child brand, I’ve got it and it’s lovely

Although I do hope it’s nice as it looks like it’ll be lovely for evenings on holiday

They are all Perfectly acceptable dresses, if a little boring if you were going to buy one for this wedding occasion only. BUT if you've bought them mainly to wear on holiday then they are perfect. Out of those I would wear the light pink polka dot one for the wedding as I like that best and it looks the smartest to me. It seems you aren't that bothered about going to the wedding, and it isn't someone you are super close to if you're going to just the evening do, is that right? So does it matter you don't look your absolute most spectacular version of you? In which case I would think like you and not want to waste a load of money for one evening out. So my answer is the pink polka dot one, save your money and enjoy your holiday. Having said that I would have turned down the invite completely as I hate weddings ha ha.

As you haven't seen the couple for many years and given that you only have an invitation to the informal evening reception, I would focus on just feeling good.

You say that you have the pink polka dot dress already and that wearing it makes you feel fabulous, so go with that. It sounds perfect for your colouring.

The other purchases can go in the wardrobe for another day.

What I would suggest is getting your hair blow dried and perhaps buying a new lipstick.

With a spray of your favourite perfume, you're good to go!

I do dislike them but turning it down would be far too much drama in my family

I do plan on getting all dolled up as I love a chance to do a full face of makeup and do my hair 😂

I would say go with what you most feel confident in xxx

Doone22 · 10/05/2026 16:29

They're all too informal for an evening do. They are only suitable for a casual garden party. If you have no sense of style (many don't, it's not a crime) put yourself into the hands of an assistant at a decent store: John Lewis or M&S

professionalcommentreader · 10/05/2026 16:29

Sainsbury’s has several copies of that style nobody’s child dress
