Mac Studio Fix - any tips on how to apply??

Sorry I feel like I've posted about this 100 times before but I have just switched from Estee Lauder Double Wear to Mac Studio Fix and really struggling with it. Does anyone have any tips on how best to apply it? I'm finding it goes really cakey and slips off my nose very quickly, whereas Double Wear literally stayed in place all day.

I currently do:
Moisteriser
Primer
It cosmetics concealer under eyes and on side of nose
Dot the foundation around the t zone and blend with a damp beauty blender

It looks ok for about an hour...

Are you giving enough time between each stage for the product to sink in and set before you move onto the next one?

Particularly the concealer needs to set for a couple of minutes before you apply the studio fix on top. I would also swop the sponge for brush and stipple it on as opposed to brushing.

I’m no expert, by any means but I hope this helps 😊

I used to wear this but they changed the formulation and its now v chalky. I have now changed to the Laura Mercier solid foundation. But try building up slowly with a brush rather than use the pad thing.

Thanks both, what kind of brush would you recommend?
And would you still dot it around your face and then work it in with the brush? Or apply a different way?

Put it on with a foundation brush and then go over it will a damp sponge and product to make it more Matt and help it set. I also use a finishing powder (like Laura gellar).

Any foundation brush, I like this one from sculpted by Amiee that you can get on Amazon, but lightly stipple the product on, don’t brush it across if that makes sense, lots of You Tube videos you can watch. Also agree with a previous poster that you can use a setting powder on top if you need to and Laura Mercier do a great range, although you don’t need to use a lot.

Thanks all for the advice! I forgot to add that I do use Laura Mercier setting powder on top but I wonder if that's contributing to the problem. I tried without the powder today and although I am quite shiny now the texture of the foundation seems better??
I have never used a setting spray, would that be better?

I’ve just made this switch (so gutted about the double wear formula change) and I don’t think I’ll be purchasing the studio fix again, it looks great for about an hour and then literally slides off my face. I have oily skin but double wear (with exactly the same skin prep) used to stay matte on my skin all day. Not sure which foundation to turn to next… it’s going to be an expensive few months of trial and error!

I always used to wear it and loved it, I applied it with a foundation brush and the coverage was amazing. I switched to Laura Geller Baked Foundation for a while and when I went back to Studio Fix the formula had changed and it’s really chalky on me. I only use the smallest amount but it still looks caked on.

Sorry that you are experiencing this too! What are you going to try next? I'm not sure who else does a decent long lasting matte foundation, so many of them are soooo shiny!

Maybe it's the new formula that isn't working then rather than my poor application 😂 I tried Laura Geller but I found it looked perfect at first but went really orange and shiny after a few hours so doesn't work for me unfortunatly.

Laura Geller is the same on me, that’s why I went back to Studio Fix. I don’t use much foundation when I apply it and the old formula lasted all day despite me only using that tiny amount and it looked natural, unlike the new formula which neither lasts or looks natural.

shardlakem · 08/05/2026 20:08

So frustrating isn't it! What are you using at the moment / what might you try next?

I had slightly more success today by using a really tiny amount of foundation and the tinest bit of powder on top to set it, didn't slide off too much but also showed every fine line and didn't cover blemishes!!
