Shorts for 48yo

I’m 48. Not worn my favourite shorts for a few years due to weight gain, but I’ve lost 3.5 stone and am now 9 stone 7, meaning they fit again.
But I’m wondering if they’re better left to younger people. The problem is, they’re short. My legs are good, but I’ve yet to find a longer pair that suit me: they tend to shorten my legs and add width to my hips.
Can anyone suggest anything more age appropriate?

Old shorts are similar to this (they do cover my bum!)

Im in the same boat but i have found that if i style denim shorts with a shirt instead of a t-shirt, the look is more “age-appropriate”
same with other shorts. I am planning to wrar shorts that are perhaps 1 or 2 inches down from my butt cheeks so not super short shorts. Also i find “boyfriend cut” denim shorts more “age appropriate” than other rype of denim shorts. I also have some nice linen monsoon and boden shorts. Have fun and enjoy your new figure!

Thanks, but the shorts on that link may be a bit too… stylish (?) for me. They all seem very structural. I’d prefer something that was flattering than something that was a stand out “piece” iykwim? I’m not sure i want to stand out!

I bought these last year, really comfortable, not super short and look good with a shirt or oversized tshirt/hoody

To me, most of those shorts (from hot pants to culottes) are just shorts - it’s the current styling that’s distinctive. I wasn’t suggesting you buy any specific pair - just observe how they are styled.

I’m sure you’ll arrive at what works best for you!

Sainsburys had these in which were a bit longer cut and felt v soft

I’m 49 and just wear the short shorts. They aren’t as short as you see on some teenagers but they are a similar length to the Sainsbury’s ones pictured above. Longer ones don’t suit me as well. My legs are probably my best feature but they are still 49-year-old legs.
I wouldn’t wear them to the office but anywhere else I do…

I'm in the same boat except I'm mid 50s. I wear shorts shorts (not hot pants!!!) with a shirt/tshirt.

I have very long slim legs (not a brag, I'm 5 10 and it's just my shape) and those long shorts look terrible on me. Somehow, despite being tall I look like Don Estelle in them 😂

Age appropriate is what's comfortable and suits your body shape OP!!!

What I would give to have the legs for those shorts. I would wear the ones in both the pictures with a little t-shirt and a flowy linen shirt over it. And fabulous sandals.

Pendapala · 05/05/2026 06:33

Long shorts look terrible on most people. Slim people usually look much better in short shorts, so I’d just wear and enjoy them if I were you.

I am 48 and wear short lightweight Mountain Warehouse shorts for walking (spend summer holidays in the Alps), with a linen vest or shirt. For day to day or the beach, I like chambray (denim is too hot for me) shorts with a light cotton or linen shirt.

I love me some short shorts but I've recently bought these slightly longer tie waist Marks and Spencer shorts and they somehow seem more current to me.

i like NYDJ shorts. They’re quite pricey but very flattering on. I’m 55 and I don’t like the top half of my legs much, so they have good coverage without being too frumpy. I love wearing shorts. They’re on the John Lewis website
I found this at John Lewis & Partners. What do you think?
