Have supermarket clothes become more stylish and better value recently?

I've bought some really nice pieces in these supermarkets lately, Asda at the moment has some lovely summer trousers, wide, with great patterns. In years gone by I'd never have dreamed of finding interesting, stylish clothes in these supermarkets, but either I was wrong, or they've really upped their game recently. I think maybe with the demise of department stores, they've spotted a gap in the market?

Anyone else found any gems in the supermarket lately?

I am a closet Tescos fan, and have been known to wear a Tesco dress or pair of jeans with a Chanel handbag....

Appalonia · 02/05/2026 23:38

The original post meant to say Asda and Morrison's, MN offered a different title for my post, which I thought was better, then I realised my post didn't make sense!😂

I like TU. I've got a couple of nice summer dresses.

snakeface · 03/05/2026 00:17

Tu make great jeans in short, which are perfect length for me.
People often ask me where they are from

I really like Tesco for clothes, they wash well, keep their shape and are reasonably priced, even my 22 year old dd has a few Tesco clothing items too.

Steelworks · 03/05/2026 06:23

I quite like Tu as well.

Hiddeninthetrees · 03/05/2026 06:26

I've found for several years now that they are great quality, but the selection hs definitely improved even more recently. Mind you, I've several clothes from Primark that I've had over 20 years. I think the key is to choose carefully.

My teen really quite likes Asda for clothes, she has dresses, pjs, and t shirts from there.

(I’ve been impressed with the bed linen from there too, 100% cotton, nice designs.)

Sandysandytoes · 03/05/2026 06:35

Yes! You’ve been missing a trick. If you choose well they have some good things. Lots of stuff that appeals to each demographic so it’s a wide range and not everything is to my taste but it is of the same quality as any where else imo. It’s always very satisfying when people compliment something and I say it’s from Tesco. I don’t like the underwear so much though.

Cocktailsandcheese · 03/05/2026 06:44

It's been that way for quite a few years now, there are some brilliant clothing buys in supermarket.

Globules · 03/05/2026 06:57

Tu have some really great stuff.

I second their short jeans.

They also do tall jeans with a deeper rise which is exactly what I need.

I just wish Sainsburys would re-open their changing rooms. I would buy so much more from them! They have so much nice looking stuff but it's too much of a hassle to try on at home and bring it back for me. The returns have to be made via the tobacco kiosk now which always has the longest, slowest queues.

I don't know about the other supermarkets but I haven’t bought a thing clothes wise in Sainsbury’s since they shut all their fitting rooms. Often there aren’t any mirrors either.

I find that cheaper clothes only look good if the fit is good and sizing is often inconsistent so you do really need to try on.

Given that Sainsbury have so few staff now in store , I find buying anything there at all a big faff now as you wait endlessly for any staff member - usually an overworked teen - to sort out the machine when it needs an age or other check. So the thought of trying on and home and then returning is too depressing.

thornbury · 03/05/2026 07:07

Watch Alltheladies on YouTube, she does regular supermarket hauls.

EvelynBeatrice · 03/05/2026 07:07

It really annoys me that supermarkets increase their profits by dispensing with staff thereby making the customer experience much worse.

eyeballer · 03/05/2026 07:08

I have some TU bits that are good quality, I think it’s a combination of the high street being nowhere near as good now as it was years ago & supermarkets upping their game.

openended · 03/05/2026 07:31

I use Tu for school uniform.I purchased polo shirts and son's reinforced at the knee school trousers and dd's school summer dresses from there. They are great quality, the polo shirts are still white and hold their shape. The trousers have held up really well too.

Slouped · 03/05/2026 07:35

The supermarkets have always had some great bits if you pick and choose - that's not new. I buy clothes from a wide range of places but some of my most complimented bits have been from supermarkets over the years, even when I was in my 20s. Agree the lack of changing rooms is a real pain and makes me buy less though, especially as I don't do my weekly supermarket shop at the two near me with big clothing sections.

TheVeryAngryCaterpillar · 03/05/2026 07:38

Got a red jumpsuit from the middle o' Lidl yesterday for £7 and it's fantastic!

SardinesOnButteredToast · 03/05/2026 07:49

I haven't looked for some years, but previously found their stuff to be full of cheap, thin man-made fibres with unnecessary shiny yellow faux gold zippers or buttons that just made them look naff, or 'wool' that you knew would bobble across the chest after three wears. I will absolutely have a second look based on some of the comments here. Thanks OP.

RampantIvy · 03/05/2026 07:54

I used to love making the longer journey to Sainsburys to just buy clothes, but now they have closed their changing rooms I no longer go. It's the same with the huge Tesco.

I guess I could pay for something and try them on in the toilets, but that isn't ideal. It's too time consuming to buy and then take them back.

My local big Sainsbury’s has a large range of Tu clothing but only one mirror tucked away by the bras, which is the one range that no one (hopefully!)finds it useful to try on in public. My current moan about them is that the hanger size frequently does not match the actual size on the label which is annoying after you have carefully sifted through for a unicorn of a popular size - returns are obviously just being bunged on any hanger. The lack of any floor staff anywhere near the area also shows in the mixed up ranges.

Amiacoolorwarmcolour · 03/05/2026 07:58

I have some dresses I’ve bought off vinted from the TU range. I find them good quality.

CaptainMyCaptain · 03/05/2026 08:10

I have bought two pairs of jeans and some loose chambray trousers in Tu. The fit is perfect for me and the fabric is good quality. The jeans in M&S are made for a different shape.

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 03/05/2026 09:02

I like tu and Tescos. Haven’t bought in Asda for ages but recently saw. Lovely pair summer harim pants in a fab place blue and gold. They are stunning and only £18!

i tend to avoid polyester tops now tho due to meno and hot flushes.
