Have supermarket clothes become more stylish and better value recently?

I've bought some really nice pieces in these supermarkets lately, Asda at the moment has some lovely summer trousers, wide, with great patterns. In years gone by I'd never have dreamed of finding interesting, stylish clothes in these supermarkets, but either I was wrong, or they've really upped their game recently. I think maybe with the demise of department stores, they've spotted a gap in the market?

Anyone else found any gems in the supermarket lately?

I love a supermarket bargain, but often find the sizings are hit and miss. I don't know any stores with change rooms anymore, so I end up getting them delivered, but I can guarantee I'll need to return about half the items. Too big, too small, too short or long in the body etc. The one thing I can't (very rarely) get in supermarkets are wide shoes.

I often get cotton, polo t-shirts and shorts for DH which is his summer staple

Nutmeg leggings from Morrisons are excellent. The last for ages without going baggy or shiny and they come in larger sizes too.

I get a lot of stuff from Tu @ Sainsbury’s. I order it online. I occasionally pass through a big Tesco and sometimes pick up bits there.

The supermarket clothes shrink in my experience or am I missing something? Tried with kids clothes years ago granted and all given away after one wash.

I don't know what it is but yes you're missing something. Do you really think people continually buy from supermarkets just for everything to shrink after one wash. Things like school uniform I find exactly the same quality from Sainsburys as I do from M&S/Next, so I own bits from all three.

MissBridgetJones · 03/05/2026 09:49

I love a bit of Tu, the jeans are fab!

I like TU. I've got a couple of nice summer dresses.

I think they are great too. Bought a TU dress several years ago for a destination wedding. It was just perfect and my favourite dress ever.

IDontHateRainbows · 03/05/2026 09:54

Im a sainsburys tu fan, had some lovely clothes from there at excellent prices. I reckon as mid range retailers have skimped on quality in the past few years the difference has got less ( in quality) so why pay more ?

BestIsWest · 03/05/2026 09:56

I’m also a fan of TU jeans.

I had a black linen shirt dress from there last summer that was fantastic and I wore it to death.

Tu and F+F have both had some good stuff in over the years. The changing rooms not being open are very annoying though. Is that post Covid or a lack of staffing?

JenniferJupiterr · 03/05/2026 10:16

@Shinyandnew1 no. The removal of changing rooms is because there’s nothing in it for Sainsbury’s profit wise. Every inch of floor space counts in a store and a changing room takes up space that could be used for stock. Getting rid of them massively financially outweighs people returning items that don’t fit

cubistqueen · 03/05/2026 10:18

I blight two satin slip skirts from tesco last year and they are actually better quality than the ones I got from M&S (you can take the girl out of the 90’s……and all thst!)

Erm no i do not think people have money to waste buying clothes that don't last but wondered if others have had the same experience as me. Hence the post. Grateful you have had success. Unfortunately it has eluded me so far. Underwear i have bought from Sainsbury's was poor quality in my opinion but so was the stuff from m&s.

Squirrelchops1 · 03/05/2026 10:45

I love TU in particular
Just bought some lovely shorts for my holiday

Probably covid made them realise they could still sell enough without them. Its annoying as i end up buying, going into the loos to try on(grim) and having to then queue up for refund if it doesn't fit.

Chewbecca · 03/05/2026 10:46

I bought a pile from Tesco recently having seen them on a FB reel. Always a mistake to buy after a FB reel! It was true on this occasion too, none of it fitted me well. Gaping on the side, too long, just not my body shape at all. Learned my lesson. Again. Hopefully it will last!

My local one hasn't repurposed the space, the changing rooms are just permanently shut. Maybe they realised theu could sell more as some people can't be bothered to come back for refund ?

RampantIvy · 03/05/2026 10:50

I have just had an idea. There is a TK Maxx opposite the large Sainsburys so I could buy from Sainsburys, go to TK Maxx and take something from their clothes rail and try them on in the TK Maxx changing room. I bet lots of people do this.

PashaMinaMio · 03/05/2026 10:57

I bought a £30 garment from M&S. It’s ok but slightly lighter (in weight) than I wanted. “It’ll do” I thought. Only one colour available.

In Sainsbury’s a couple days later, I saw the same garment, variety of colours, nice warm weight fabric and only £15!

I was gob-smacked and felt very ripped off by M&S.

Secretseverywhere · 03/05/2026 11:00

I like Tesco, I used to buy basic cotton t shirts from Marks but they dropped the quality massively. I now buy at Tesco for less. I would say I’m tall (5 11”) and make the odd killing ion the sale rail as their regular stuff is long enough.

snakeface · 03/05/2026 11:08

With Tu jeans I buy online, much better variety than you'd ever get on store. Luckily my husband is semi retired so I get him to queue up to do the returns 🤣

Bizarre as our changing room space is still changing room, it just has a ‘changing room closed’ sign so they aren’t gaining any floor space.

Plus I haven’t bought clothes in there for years as I can’t be arsed to bring it back if they don’t fit so don’t bother! I can’t imagine I’m alone,

I think it's just luck as Tu sizes are perfect for me but M&S are way off. Asda knickers are great but I haven't tried anything else. I haven't tried Tesco either.

neilyoungismyhero · 03/05/2026 13:07

Tesco Florence and Fred over the years often have some really stylish pieces. They're good quality too.

hahabahbag · 03/05/2026 13:12

Sainsbury’s has always been good especially for the price point. Supermarket clothes are mass produced but tend to be fairly well made for the price
