As per the title, I’m just looking for inspiration and interested to see what people are buying.

The last thing I bought was a pair of board shorts, neither stylish or beautiful, but practical.

Green Gab denim jacket from Sezane, it's really soft and perfect for this time of year, and olive green tapered linen trousers from Uniqlo, comfortable, easy to wear and great value for money, I think

Anyone seen any nice summer tops/t shirts lately?

Yes it's good to see another vintage fan on here! They didn't even have a word for it when I started out - they were all just second hand clothes and you could still pick up Edwardian stuff in the right places. Now I go to fairs and half of it's Asos and Top Shop Shock

@HereAndNo I think around 30 years is generally recognised as the cut-off age, so currently '90s.

I love vintage! Sadly the woman who owned the 50s onwards clothes shop locally has now retired and shut down her shop. She had great taste. Florence of Florence and the Machine went there.

This seems such a meaningless question? What else are shops full of right now?

Where have you already looked - and what sort of thing are you searching for that you haven’t found?

JudgeJ · Today 10:56

I'm not one who buys clothes, a choice, but a few weeks ago I bought from a Sainsburys store a cotton blue and white sweater that I thought would be good for cooler Summer evenings. When I got it home I tried it on, my usual size, and it buried me. Looking on line I saw it advertised as being 'over-sized', when I went to return it I went 3 or 4 sizes smaller to get a normal fit!

@Marmalademorning Thanks for those suggestions. I particularly like the outfit on the left and I have got some striped tops, you make them sound so much nicer calling them Breton though. Is the neckline "squarer" in the Breton top?

@Karistyleaftea The neckline of the French Connection striped top is a square neckline, yes. I have a thing about square neck tops. I have a couple of plain jersey ones from H&M as well.

That’s the thing I haven’t looked! Walked past Zara and Next and Primark and M&S when I haven’t had time to look. Only place I’ve been in has been Sainsbury’s Tu. I do have a Grazia to browse for inspiration.

I might go to the new Me + Em store and others there when it opens in Bath as I’m due there this month.

When I walked past these shops last month they didn’t seem to have much summery stuff in, apart from Primark.

Thanks. I have some tiny Topshop hot pants from 1990. Vintage item! That I will never wear again ;-)

Is this your answer to my question to you asking what qualifies as vintage? I see that my 90s clothes won’t fit the brief then!

No - I hadn't got round to replying yet as, tbh, I wasn't sure of the exact definition of what counts as vintage these days!!

But I see others have replied - so I can now start to carbon-date my old clothes!! I'm sure I still have a few 90s slip skirts stashed in the baskets on the top of the wardrobe (where the cat sleeps ... 😁!!)!

To me, "proper" vintage (because I don't know what else to call it), is what I wasn't old enough to wear first time around. I'm slightly older than you, & started to become really interested in fashion - & music - in my early-to-mid teens. So I loved the whole creative freedom that came with the New Romantic/Goth/Indie scenes - it was hugely influential on style in a way that I'm not sure has really happened since?

So the 80s are my own mental cut-off point. No stirrup pants or satin bomber jackets for me! The 70s & before that are my idea of "proper" vintage - I remember my mum's puff-sleeved mini dresses, & my aunt's Biba maxis, & have always loved the clothes from that era. But I have vintage clothes & accessories dating from the Victorian era onwards.

I got my first pair last summer, one of my favourite ever buys. They’ve walked miles and miles and been so comfortable!

I'm really enjoying them too!

My cut-off used to be the '60s because that was when I started taking an interest in clothes. But then I got into Jackie-Kennedyesque suit jackets that I remembered the grown ups wearing, so the limit slipped to 1970, when I started buying my own clothes. But now I'm finding myself drawn to '70s shirts with the dagger collars so it's slipping again...

I think I'll always draw a line at Y2K stuff though, not because I'm sniffy about the clothes - it was a golden age for the high street in some ways, prices coming down but the quality still holding up - but it's too disconcerting to see the clothes I wore in middle age - not even my youth - repackaged as vintage!

Yes I think of 60s and 70s as vintage. Clothes from the Victorian era, wow. They must be worth a fortune too now!
