Will I be the only one who looks my age?

Everyone around me seems to be getting Botox, or other beauty procedures. I’m mid 30s and not keen to go down that route due to the ongoing cost. It’s not cheap! But then I wonder if I’ll end up looking miles older than my peers because of this?

Any other 30-somethings who are not planning to get Botox?

Most of my colleagues who are in their early twenties have lip filler and regular botox but I do understand the pressure they probably feel because social media has changed the way someone in their twenties lives, compared to when I was young.

I feel sad for anyone in middle age feeling the need for these procedures because once I hit 40 I felt free of any expectations or pressures to look or act a certain way. I'm not sure why some middle aged women don't experience the same freedom and confidence but it does make me sad for them.

People who get a lot of tweakments done, unless they go to doctors who specifically go for a very natural look and are experts (and these people are very expensive) to me actually look older. I say that as someone who gets Botox. I think filled lips instantly age you, I still think they can look good but they don’t make you look younger.

I think Jennifer looks good but she would have looked better without any work done. The person I always think about is Michelle Keegan. She was stunning before and I don't think she needed any work done

I remember Jonathan Ross brother Paul slagging off Michelle Collins at least 20 years ago going on about her wrinkles saying she needs to dip her head in a vat of Oil of Ulay. Think she looks great

See I think jenifer has really ruined herself - her chin is quite masculine and with the blown up stiff cheeks she just looks odd

she is who I thought of immediately when I read this post - such a. Shame

courtney cox just reminds me of Regan in exorcist - she just looks so weird with the deep set eyes - the puffed up skin has just hidden her eyes

Are you worried about looking older? I’m afraid it’s inevitable. You can use moisturiser, drink lots of water, get Botox, exercise, get a face lift - you’ll still look older. I look my age whether I use moisturiser or not, I prefer my skin with it on. I have Botox on my chin as it was terribly crinkled (like a pug), I think it looks better, I still look my age though.

Destiny123 · Yesterday 21:40

No intention of. I still regularly get IDd at 35..I've had botox for my jaw (as thanks to covid icu and Anaesthetics exams I now clench my teeth in my sleep and its agony). Ended up with a totally paralysed face for 24h from misplaced local anaesthetic which I thought was hilarious (as an anaesthetist knew it wouldn't last long) but definitely wouldn't risk complications for vanity. Particularly as mine was a maxfax dr/dentist of 50 years let alone however many weeks of beauty college you require to do it cosmetically

I think Botox, lip plumping etc actually makes people looks older and unattractive
What is wrong with looking your age and natural?

They remind me of transvestites and ventriloquist dummies - just look simply awful

I’m at a loss to understand why people in early 20s are doing this - they look like dolls in pictures - and not in a good way

Waterwaterwaterwaterwatercycle · Yesterday 21:43

I don't think botox and filler necessarily make people look younger than they are though? Definitely not in all cases.

If you have already decided you don't want to do it, don't worry about this. You shouldn't feel pressured into getting cosmetic procedures you don't even want. And I say that as someone who had botox twice before I was forty! I haven't had it done recently and I'm not convinced it made me look any better tbh.

NancyMeyers · Yesterday 21:45

I wouldn't want my DD mucking about with her face when she's older, so I make my decisions based on that. I realise that she might still go ahead and make her own decisions despite my actions. 'Mucking about' sounds judgemental of those who do go in for botox etc, but its more about that I think she's absolutely perfect as she is, rather than negative judgements against other people.

SwatTheTwit · Yesterday 21:46

I don’t fully reject the possibility of changing my mind down the line, but I’m late 30s and maybe only a couple of us left in my workplace with no Botox.

It varies a lot though: some people you can barely tell, others it’s very obvious, others it started out discreet and then became obvious over time.

Crushed23 · Yesterday 21:48

Strawberryteabag · Yesterday 21:14

I actually think getting Botox can make you look older than somebody the same age with no Botox. In your 30s and getting Botox makes you look in your 40s and trying to look younger.

100% this.

Botox before mid-40s invariably has this effect.

Beachforever · Yesterday 21:58

Well Botox is something you can do whenever. You don’t need to start young. If you get to 45 and decide you look tired, haggard and older than your friends you can choose to get some then if you feel like it. And if you don’t like the effect, you can just not have it again. It wears off after a couple of months.

I have it every now and again. Maybe twice a year at most. I just do it when I’m looking quite tired and feel like I need a bit of a pick me up.

I think Jennifer always had that kind of chin pre treatments tbh. On the one hand I kind of get it. She's a Hollywood actress and there's pressure but she was stunning before. I remember reading how much she spent on her beauty/fitness routine around 20 years ago. Like 150 thousand dollars a year

It's a shame that women feel so much pressure. Like Demi Sims from Towie. I remember watching an old episode and she was stunning pre getting work done

I saw a recent post re Lana Jenkins from love island. She was beautiful before - and Georgia Steele from love island on her first series. I thought she was so pretty and you see her a few years later and she's had work done - like at 25. It's a shame young women feel so pressured

Givinguponmyhair · Yesterday 22:05

I dont think getting fillers and stuff makes you look younger. The other day I was watching MAFS and thinking how old these young women look compared to previous generations. Just skin and expression wise.

Sleeptightdisgustingblob · Yesterday 22:09

I think Botox makes people look a bit unsettling.
I'd rather spend my money on a fun adventure or a good book

Preg1989 · Yesterday 22:15

So much judgement here of women who do decide to have aesthetic treatments!

I am encroaching 40 and find that my smile lines and 11 lines were really getting me down. I get Botox, specifically for these areas. I like the “natural” looks so I’m not totally frozen. I joke with my anaesthetist that I need my husband and toddler to still know my grumpy face 😂😂

I say do what you want, if that’s getting treatments or not. Everyone is pretty wrapped up in how they look and feel so I’d be surprised if your ageing (or lack of) comes up too much in conversation.

StarsShiningOnANighttimeSea · Yesterday 22:16

I couldn't give a crap how old I look. I have a badger streak (+ many more white hairs) that I cannot be bothered to dye. No chance in hell am I going to get fillers or Botox.

Cosmetically, the only thing I would ever get done is laser hair removal on my face. My ability to grow facial hair (thanks PCOS...) has begun to outstrip my husband's.

She did have that chin but with her cheeks puffed up and not moving it’s not a good look - more ventriloquist dummy

one of the problems is that I think people look in the mirror while their face is static and think it looks good - they need to look while they are moving and see how awful it looks

Preg1989 · Yesterday 22:22

And that’s ok but there’s 2 pages of people responding that anyone they know looks awful for even attempting an aesthetic treatment.

I fully agree there are some who go too far and have too much done.

I was hoping to give some balance to the previous comments!

I'm 39 and no work at all, nor planning any.

I do now dye my hair (myself) once a month because I'm dark brunette and really can't bring myself to embrace the grey. But I really CBA with having 'upkeep' to worry about and getting botox or filler or whatever topped up.

FredaMountfitchet · Yesterday 22:26

Probably unpopular opinion but I’m over 60 still work with a lot of young ‘uns . I’d say 50% botoxed and I honestly think those who haven’t look better .
More animated more alive - appreciate it may be ‘bad’ Botox . Had it myself in the past but gave it up as really didnt think it made me look better just odd in my opinion .
Appreciate that may colour my thoughts
Honestly - laughing smiling and frowning and swearing at life makes for a better face not perfect but better .

ChoosingMyOwnRandomUsername · Yesterday 22:31

People with Botox look their age - they just look a bit more wide eyed. As you age you can look weird or you can look older. You can’t look young again - you’ve already done that

Agree with this. Even people with good work - I think Sandra Bullock is an example of 'good' if the new Practical Magic trailer is anything to go by - they don't look young. You don't look at SB and mistake her for 25 or 35.

Almondbeans · Yesterday 22:32

I will live with the face i have, for what ive seen with botx and fillers and everything else no thanks, it will age you more than life its self.

Eastereggschocolateisthebest · Yesterday 22:37

Oooo teh only person I’ve seen look good with whatever they’ve had is

Toyah Wilcox - her face moves and everything! 😂

Lisa Kudrow looks good too
