Help style my dress (please)

I had such great responses the last time I asked for help here, I thought I would come back for more.😍

How would you style this dress?
Black and gold option
I'm lucky enough to have been nominated for an award in my industry and so it is for the awards ceremony. It's the black and gold version. The gold detailing is quite a dark gold. I only have pale gold heels which didn't seem to really go but were also quite covered/chunky which I don't think helped either (just tried on for height ref 😊). That made me think perhaps black strappy heels but perhaps that's too boring, so I've circled back to gold - but I think would need to be a strong gold. Open to other ideas too! I'd love suggestions for a bag, shoes and accessories if anyone has any ideas.

For reference I am 5 foot 8, a size 12 and late 30s with long brunette hair. I was going to do a half up, half down style for my hair. I love the dress - it's very flattering and suits the event theme perfectly.

Thank you in advance for any help.

I would pick black shoes. Would be elegant but not detract from dress impact.

Steelworks · 21/04/2026 01:03

The dress is gorgeous.

i’d go for some black elegant shoes as well.

WinterCarlisle · 21/04/2026 06:35

LOVE the dress! What’s the quality like? I go to quite a lot of Punjabi weddings (I’m white British) and dresses like this are great for the parties. Lovely colours, too. I think I’d go for plain black strappy shoes. Congratulations! I hope you win!

Before buying I would check reviews.

Pearlstillsinging · 21/04/2026 11:21

I would wear black shoes but carry a gold bag. It is a lovely looking dress but unless you have already bought it, I would wary of the quality at the price.

WonderingWanda · 21/04/2026 12:57

What is the length of the dress like on you? I'm 5'9 and find that long dresses can actually fall mid Calton me and look a bit daft if worn with heels. Something back and strappy would look best though.

Nonewnews · 21/04/2026 13:00

check reviews on trusted pilot

I can only second this.

Black shoes.
Black bag.
Minimal jewellery.

The dress is the main event! Gold shoes and bag would clash and look a bit tacky.

AuntChippy · 21/04/2026 19:04

I think I’d go for black shoes and bag and no or minimal jewellery. I also be sweating in 100% polyester, but that’s just me.

I think @MrsR87 has already bought it so no problems there?

Doggymummar · 22/04/2026 15:10

5ne dress is busy so I wouldn't add to it I don't think

Thank you to everyone who replied. Just to address some points that people made. I had already ordered and tried the dress but did check review websites etc before purchasing. I knew there was a £6.99 fee to return parcels, so just made sure to order all possible ones at the same time so I could return anything that didn't fit/wasn't right in one go. I will say, I returned them through Evri at Asda on the Monday morning and had the refund in my account by the Thursday. The whole process and customer service team were far better than when I ordered much more expensive items from Debenhams recently (and that refund took two weeks, and I didn't get my next day delivery refunded either even though it took them 5 days to deliver the parcel! Don't intend to use Debenhams again in a hurry). I looked at all the dresses I ordered in the pictures people had posted on the reviews and I found this helpful for looking at quality and fit. There was only 1 dress of the 4 I ordered where I thought the quality wasn't very good. I also read reviews where people said the sizing was small so I ordered one size larger than usual and they fitted well.

I have read though everyones replies and agree that black will look better so have ordered some black strappy heels with a simple black pouch bag and some gold drop earrings. Hopefully the look comes together when I try it all on.

I'd go with something like these ( but in black).

Also, OP, you're not lucky to be receiving an award: I assume you've worked bloody hard for it and deserve it!

These are beautiful - I nearly ordered them for a wedding a few weeks ago and although I haven't ordered them for this dress, I think it is inevitable they will end up in my basket at some point! 😆

And thank you for the pep talk - you are absolutely right!

The length is actually pretty good...I've opted for a mid heel as I think this will be just right with the dress and my height.

Edited

I am impressed with the quality of this particular dress and would order again in another colour. I ordered a totally different style dress from the same site and i wasn't a fan of the material.
