Hair highlights issue

I’ve been getting highlights for over 20 years with no problems but recently I’ve noticed snapping of some hair about 2 inches off the crown.

I’ve started using WOW leave in kale treatment and it’s making a difference, as well as some heavy duty conditioners, but I’m really worried that I won’t be able to have my hair coloured!

has this happened to anyone on here before and what was the solution? My roots are starting to come in and I don’t know what the best move is.

Check your hairdresser hasn't changed brands they use. Also bleach genuinely is harsh on your head

That's usually a sign of over-processing or weakened hair, especially after years of highlights. You’re doing the right thing with conditioning, but I’d pause or space out highlights for a bit and focus on rebuilding strength. When you go back to coloring ask for a gentler approach, maybe fewer highlights or lower developer strength. It’s not that you can’t color again just that your hair needs a bit of recovery first.

Thanks, good advice! I’ll speak to the hairdresser about a gentler approach. I really hope I can still colour as I don’t suit my natural colour.

Hi OP. Before your next colour appointment ask your colourist specifically for a bond-building treatment applied before the highlights as it reinforces internal hair structure during the chemical process. Be upfront about the breakage so they can adjust developer strength or processing time accordingly. Hope this helps.

Thanks, I hadn’t thought of that but definitely sounds like what I need!
