Waxed Barn Jacket …?

warmpinkshawl · 20/04/2026 08:36

I’m looking for a waxed barn jacket that will work as a neutral piece within a classic wardrobe and hoping the MN style crew can help with suggestions and advice.

Will this function as ‘waterproof’ on city breaks?

Any suggestions of something suitable (I’m struggling)?

Alternative ideas?

(I can’t afford items in the Barbour jacket arena).

I don't know what posters mean when they talk about a "classic" wardrobe or that they have a "classic style". The basic Barbour waxed jacket is a "classic" as its basic shape and design doesn't change but I'm not sure if it's possible to have an entire wardrobe of "classics"

A waxed jacket will function as waterproof on city breaks.

I have a Barbour waxed jacket and although I live in a city and wear it at home it's not a jacket that I'd take with me on a city break. If I needed something waterproof I have a parka from Oska which is more stylish but more importantly is lighter and squishes up better in luggage or stuffed into overhead racks than the Barbour. I also have a longer waxed raincoat (actually a small man's size) from Toast in a dark green which I'd take on a city break over the Barbour.

I think the Oska parka is far more neutral than the Barbour or even the Toast coat. The Barbour to me seems very specific to a certain demographic, particularly in the city I live in.

Putting "waxed barn jacket" into Google brings up loads of results at all prices. Some are obvious Barbour dupes, others, such as one from Whistles aren't and to my eyes are more neutral than Barbour or Barbour dupes.

Not what I would use for a City Break, they are heavy and spring/autumn wear. so whilst I love mine and will always own one, I wouldn't call it a classic, multi-tasking, city break type jacket.

A 'classic' for a Spring/Summer/Autumn would be a mackintosh. Light, easy to pack, smart, timeless, waterproof, can be layered if cooler, goes with most footwear and clothing styles.

I'm sure Fat Face always have a waxed jacket as part of their range . They are a lower price than Barbour

Also, I'm sure Barbour have a discount outlet.

I have a Barbour wax jacket. I wear it a lot, except for high summer and the depths of winter. It’s mostly waterproof, mostly warm and looks smart enough or casual enough to go most places. It was just right for a mini break to London with the DC at Feb half term.

I’d get a second hand Barbour and rewax it, my DH bought his on eBay go £20 and rewaxed it about 8 years ago, still looks great.

I have a Barbour wax jacket. IMO, stick to a traditional style (eg. beadnell or beaufort), colour and lining. It should last you a lifetime. Women's Waxed Jackets | Waxed Barbour Coats
They can be worn pretty much everywhere but they are quite heavy.

Look at getting a second hand one and reproofing it yourself. You should be able to get one for about £75 or less.

For a city break, I'd go for a more lightweight waterproof.
If you look at their website there's a 'barbour' style parka that isn't waxed.

I wouldn't get a 'barbour' that wasn't a Barbour, but you can get similar coats that aren't waxed thornproofs but look like they are.

I have a waxed jacket that is very heavy too. I’m rethinking. What do you think of any of these for city breaks?

I'd take a pac-a-mac and wear a jacket.
Of those, the Regatta.
