Trainers for bunions

Snowfaux · 16/04/2026 12:44

I have tailors bunions on the outside of both feet and now developing a standard one on one of my feet (unfortunately appears to be genetic). It is mild, but I was in complete agony after a day in my sambas as they were pinching , so they’ll now be donated.

My gazelles as a bit wider, so fine for popping to the shops, but I need something better for a proper walk and running after toddlers (also fairly young so would appreciate something that isn’t matronly).

Do you have any recommendations? I’ve seen flip flop trainers recommended, but not sure which model is best? or maybe some proper running trainers with a wide front?

Thank you all

I made a similar post a few months ago and someone recommended Barefoot shoes? I must admit that I haven't tried any of the recommendations yet because my old trainers are still going, despite cracking and splitting around the bunions on both feet!

Take a look at Mahabis. They have a sale on at the moment and their customer service team is very good at responding quickly to queries.

Thank you - I’ll have a look. There is just so much out there, I guess it’s just trial and error, but much easier when you have some recommendations to start with.

I have the same issue so interested to read any recommendations.

I have bunions on both feet and find new balance 327s or Nike Airs to be the most comfortable.

Slightly out-of-date but 13 best shoes for bunions 2024

I'd think about seeing a podiatrist.

VenusInfers · 16/04/2026 15:10

I have wide feet, high arches and small bunions - getting shoes is a nightmare! I've found, after recommendation, that men's trainer styles actually DO fit better as their standard shoes are wider. Plus my size (6.5) is really small for a man's shoe so can get stuff in the sales. Worth a go :)

VenusInfers · 16/04/2026 15:11

Oh, and I find Altra's wide toe box really good too.

Manifesto · 16/04/2026 16:04

I’ve discovered Calla. Bought some trainers off Vinted to try them. My podiatrist was impressed with the good height on the toe box which some wide fit shoes don’t have. So far so good

Thanks. Do you also buy the Altra’s in the men’s 6.5? I’ll have a look as I’m the same size.

I have the podiatrist booked, but would like to find, or at least have some decent options, before my appointment.

Sole Bliss, worn by the Queen. Gabor wide fit. M&S suede side detail trainers are comfortable too.

I have bunions which are small but quite painful and I wear Nike Air Max, have done for years. They're roomy enough inside that I can fit an orthotic insole. This is important for me because the podiatrist gave me giant insoles that barely fit inside any normal shoes. If you ask they might give you a three quarter insole as well that will open up loafers as a possibility (exciting I know)

Sadly most of the current low profile Adidas shoes don't work for me, but I tried the Run 70s 2.0 this week and they weren't too bad although I can't fit my insoles in them.

For muddy walks and hikes I got Salewa Pedroc and they are amazing. I tried Altra but found them too wide at the heels.

Mens shoes are also often too wide at the heels for me but I used to have a pair of Aldo mens loafers that were a dream with my short insoles.

I have terrible feet, for all sorts of reasons, including bunions. I pretty much live in Sketchers trainers. Their range is fantastic and they also do wide fit in some trainers. I rarely think about my feet nowadays.

I have bunions on both feet, have had them since I was a young teen. I have casual trainers from White Stuff and Boden that are totally comfortable, I can easily do 25,000 steps without any pain at all. They look really nice too - I get lots of nice comments. My advice would be to size up if you can, having extra room to wriggle your toes might help.

For more serious hiking and running, I have Nike and Merrell, both are roomy and fine.

barkygoldie · 16/04/2026 22:22

I've discovered Hokas in the last year or so - there’s a wide fit version and both that and the regular one have been very comfortable with my buniony feet.

New balance wide fit, from wide fit shoes. Saucony jazz. Reebok club 85. Brooks running trainers and asics do wide fit .

StillnessStill · 16/04/2026 22:45

New balance 574 - I have lovely bunions genes too and I live in 574s

ExcitingRicotta · 16/04/2026 22:48

New balance 327s

FeministThrowingAPrincessParty · 16/04/2026 22:48

I have bunions and wear Geox. My podiatrist recommended them for watch support but i don’t notice my bunions in them either. Just got back from tennis and my Nike tennis trainers have hurt them!

Bundeena · 16/04/2026 22:53

I have wide feet, made even wider with bunions on both big toes. I wear Hoka Gaviota trainers in wide fitting. There's a really useful trainer review website called 'run repeat' that gives loads of detail on width of toe boxes etc of different styles.

Did you order the wide fit in the 574s? Or do you find the standard fit okay? I like the look of these, but cannot find any wide fits in an actual store. Thank you

Yes, I get the men's size 6.5, so right length just wider. :)
