I'm sure they are comfy because knowing Anne, she will have had 30 years to wear them in!

I have a pair of very similar Russell and Bromley boots to Anne's and I have been wearing them in (and continue to do so ) for 30 years. They might have a touch of the welly but they are very comfy 😊

ETA I am sure Anne's are a more expensive make than mine , but mine look quite similar.

chesterelly1 · 13/05/2026 22:45

Yes I’ve looked back at photos of me in the 90s and I doubt I’d wear the clothes now for fear of looking “old”.
with the exception of Sophie’s suit/blouse I’ve liked all the looks from the last few days. Although I agree that Catherine’s trousers today were bordering Slacks territory. I wish she’d worn a blockier heel, more like the model. I’m always waiting for the spindly heels to snap (don’t ask me why I think this -might be another 80s/90s throwback)

gingercat02 · 14/05/2026 07:27

I went to work in a fine knit jumper and a tweed knee length skirt in the early nineties. I was 22, dressed like my nana.

Maireas · 14/05/2026 07:34

As pp have said, I think it was just the style then. I don't think you can compare 35 years ago with today..

I think younger women dressed older in the 80s and 90s and these days older women dress younger. Just compare the pictures of Sophie in her 60s with the late Queen at the same age!

But who knows? Maybe with the rise of vintage fashion and thrifting it will soon shift back!

KiIIingMeDeftly · 14/05/2026 08:17

Or you could be like Anne, who seems to have settled on a style at 30 and never changed it since! Fashions come and go but her clothes are timeless, in a way, as they were never trendy to begin with.

eggandonion · 14/05/2026 08:19

I had some very grown up work clothes in the nineties. Power dressing! To be honest the eighties and nineties clothes were a bit odd fashion wise.

justasking111 · 14/05/2026 08:22

I had the blue jacket and white pleated skirt in the eighties.

The shift type dress Diana favoured a lot.

I disagree, I think there were some incredible fashion moments. It's just because it's moved on now. I'm sure people will definitely comment about the lack of style in the 2020s!

I miss NEXT trouser suits for work. I used to wear four on rotation! They were well made, lined etc and lasted for years (90s and early 20s).But 90s casual dressing was awful IMO.All those t-shirts under flowery strappy dresses!

KiIIingMeDeftly · 14/05/2026 09:12

The tshirts under slip dresses were back for a moment a couple of years ago! The tshirts have now gone but slips are still popular thanks to Love Story and the CBK look.

ExquisitelyDressed · 14/05/2026 09:33

I've never had a job that required formal business dress, so never had a suit apart from for interviews. I have always lived in trousers/long skirt and plain tee shirts for work, with maybe summer dresses in really warm weather. I don't suit blouses or shirts, my neck is short and bust fairly big, they make me matronly. I did have a couple of jewel coloured plain shift dresses in the early 90s )teal and magenta) that I loved. I now have a trustee role that does occasionally require business dress so have had to buy my first ever blazer and some loafers (usually live in Birkenstock's and trainers). If I have a trustee meeting the same day as work I have trousers, tee shirt, loafers and blazer for the meeting then change to hoody and trainers for work. I am not the epitome of style but I'm always comfortable.

eggandonion · 14/05/2026 09:34

It was interesting to see Diana progress through the Sloane Ranger era and the droopy dress era to her fashion icon age. Sophie was much more in the background.
I have a friend who did a lot of work presentations and had a rail of Sophie type clothes in the nineties. I had 3 babies in quick progression so wore whatever I could get into for 5 years!
Peter Phillips wedding is soon. I hope we see the photos.

If you ever watch the vintage Top of the Pops epsodes screened on BBC4 on Friday nights you can see this evidenced in real life! It is very funny to see now.😁

My working wardrobe hasn’t changed overly from the 90s to now - tailored (power) suits gave way to tailored dresses gave way to separate tailored blazers and trousers. The shoes have changed a lot though! Loafers and flat shoes or even trainers are the most common office wear now.

I went to the QEII Style Exhibition last week, it was fabulous, some of the day dresses were somewhat of their time but the evening / state / wedding gowns were timeless, absolutely stunning. Highly recommend if you can still get tickets

KiIIingMeDeftly · 14/05/2026 13:43

And she's back to beige today, come on Kate!!

So very dull! But at least she’s ditched the heels. 🎉

One thing that always makes me laugh is when/if the broadsheets review these big exhibitions - whether royal or designer-led, as in the Schiaparelli currently at the V&A - in the comments there will always be some bloke moaning that nobody's interested in frocks. And the exhibitions always, but ALWAYS, sell out...

And to me looks so much more classic and elegant for it.

Sidebeforeself · 14/05/2026 13:58

Re Kates outfit today - None of those items really gel together. Yes they are all on the beige palette but different fabrics, silouhettes etc . Nope.

justasking111 · 14/05/2026 14:32

I like Catherine outfit today 🙈

Maireas · 14/05/2026 15:02

I like the skirt, and the whole silhouette, and I love the shoes!

OP posts:
Pallisers · 14/05/2026 15:48

I like the skirt but the outfit is a bit bland - that seems to be what she likes for daywear.

But I give her a massive ten out of ten for the shoes which are gorgeous and absolutely lovely on her.

bluegreygreen · 14/05/2026 15:49

I like the outfit - it looks better in the Telegraph photos.

Points for diplomatic dressing even on a 'non-state' visit.
