I also think Mary's outfit is a miss for me - it looks like a 1970s kaftan that Margo would have worn on The Good Life!

That is a very excellent tiara that Queen Silvia is wearing and I like the red gown.

I like Estelle’s dress - she could have done with a ‘starter set’ of Camilla’s amethysts with it.

Lunde · 01/05/2026 00:04

I don't think that they want to cover Estelle in jewels while she is so young - she only turned 14 a couple of months ago.

Fab photos from the 80th birthday - what a wonderful display of tiaras. I love Queen Silvia's - stupendous. Mary's outfit was a miss for me too but I love her earrings. Was there even a representative of the british royals there? They are as related as everyone else - right?

Yes they are. Carl Gustav's grandmother was Princess Margaret of Connaught, which I think makes him King Charles's 4th cousin. Also, when Margaret died, Carl Gustav's grandfather married Lady Louise Mountbatten, sister of Lord Mountbatten and aunt of Prince Philip, although they did not have children. It doesn't seem that the British RF sent a representative, but I think it would have been nice if they had. Maybe they just don't have enough working royals to go around these days.

I agree with everyone that Queen Sylvia looks stunning in that red dress and that enormous tiara. She has lovely coloring and that red really brings it out.

CarolinaInTheMorning · 01/05/2026 02:02

Correction: Charles and Carl Gustav are third cousins once removed. And Carl Gustav is descended from two of Queen Victoria's children, Prince Arthur and Prince Leopold. His father was Arthur's grandson and his mother was Leopold's granddaughter.

Blimey, I'm not surprised Queen Sonja's wearing shades, that's a bright dress! Some fabulous jewels all round.
The Queen of Thailand looks beautiful, she's wearing something similar to Queen Mary's Fringe Tiara, except on top of the head a bit more. Gorgeous dress.

I don’t think we’ve seen Sofia with amethysts atop her tiara before. I swear she is collecting enough different jewels that she could wear something different in each setting.
also not a fan of Mary’s dress, I think plain colours are better when they’re all gussied up, let the honours and jewels do the talking

That has to be the most versatile tiara ever, seeing as we’ve now seen it with the original emeralds, then pearls, turquoises, pale blue stones (aquamarines?), dark blue stones (sapphires?), citrines - and also just plain with no coloured stones added at all. And now amethysts!

I too thought Mary’s dress was a bit too patterned with too many design features (Keyhole! Mandarin collar! Binding! Tulip sleeves!) for the pattern. But I loved her jewellery and her clever fashioning of a new tiara which came to the Danes via a Swedish princess. And that’s her second “new” tiara based on reworking historic jewels - she’s not afraid to play with the royal jewel vault and I love it.

KiIIingMeDeftly · 01/05/2026 10:08

Sofia also has the advantage of having an excellent accessory on her arm for all these occasions!

I love the versatility of Sofia's tiara that she can just swap out the accent jewels to create a completely new look - so far we have seen it with diamonds, emeralds, pearls, turquoise, 2 different shades of blue topaz, citrine, and now amethysts.

I always think you could do the same with the Vladimir Tiara. It can be plain or with pearls or emeralds. However It could take sapphire, emerald, ruby, topaz etc. droppers.

Queen Sylvia bears an uncanny resemblance to my lovely late MIL. Unfortunately for me MIL did not have such gorgeous and expensive jewellery to pass on , but I think no less of her for that. Very happy to look at Sylvia's 😂
Thank you everyone for photographs. Especially of the very hard working tiara

DeepHiker · 02/05/2026 10:39

Really nice photo of Princess Charlotte on her 11th birthday. Casual and appropriate for a girl who is approaching womanhood. I see she favours very long hair just like her mother!!

Sidebeforeself · 02/05/2026 13:44

I agree its a nice photo ,but I wouldn't say 11 is “approaching womanhood”!

KnickerlessParsons · 02/05/2026 13:46

She looks a lot like William in that photo. I used to think she looked like QEII but not so much now.
Nice photo - I love a stripey jumper.

What I mean is that the formal dresses Charlotte now wears for 'on duty' are increasingly more grown up and not the little girl smocks. Even Charlotte's coats are a bit more adult in style.

Let's get through pre teen, teens first

Been watching Charles in Bermuda. The islanders love Charles watching them. I noticed his limp. He's suffering a bit but gamely cracking on.

I think it is so much harder for girls. For boys its just a case of switching from short trousers to long and a proper fitting suit as suitable colour tie. Job done. For girls it is less easy to get the balance right. Put a girl of 11 in a childish dress and she looks uncomfortable. Put her into an adult dress she looks silly. There have been plenty of comments on here over the years of Lady Louise looking as though she has borrowed one of her mum, Sophie's coats. I just think it is very tricky to do suitable 'formal' clothes for tweenager/teenager girls. So far I like the outfits Charlotte has progressed on to. The blue check coat with a matching or at least toning dress underneath was a particular favourite.

Maireas · 02/05/2026 15:12

Louise has borrowed Sophie's coats and dresses.

I still wouldnt say it’s approaching womanhood though. Surely she is just dressing age appropriately?
