Fabulous dress, lovely to see the amethysts out again. I'm glad she didn't wear the tiara it would have been over the top.

eggandonion · 29/04/2026 09:23

I hope she tries tiaras on on a quiet afternoon! Camilla has excellent tiara hair.

Oh so do I . Whilst whispering to herself "what Camilla wants , Camilla gets" 😂

It is certainly a statement necklace. But the dress and necklace combination seemed wrong.
Melania seems different this time round. Not relaxed...but more sociable? She smiles more. I wonder what goes on behind the scenes in the Trump household. I imagine it's a bit like Dallas.

With Trump as JR. he’s certainly no Bobby!

eggandonion · 29/04/2026 11:23

Afternoon tea and tiara. The Duchess of Gloucester could bring a few and they could try each other's on.
Melania looks as if she has excellent underwear beneath her suits.

Lunde · 29/04/2026 11:37

Camilla usually does "big bling" very well but here the necklace and gown seemed to be fighting each other for attention. I think she needed to decide a focal point rather than wear them together.

As pp have said - the bright pink would have looked great with diamonds

Or she could have worn the necklace and chosen a gown in a paler shade (white, ivory, lavender etc) to make the jewels really stand out.

Maireas · 29/04/2026 11:52

Yes, @Lunde , pale pink or lavender would have worked well.

Camilla looks lush in that hot pink gown, but absolutely not with that necklace.

Cassiope · 29/04/2026 12:19

I think something close to the true violet that the late Queen is wearing in the Telegraph piece would have been rather wonderful. It's not a colour people often choose, so it would have been striking, especially in the loose, simple styles Camilla favours for evening gowns. The settings for the amethysts in that necklace are so attractive, I'd be happy to see it worn often. It would complement several shades of green very nicely too.

RomainingCalm · 29/04/2026 12:33

Completely agree with @Lunde - lovely dress, amazing necklace and earrings but just not together. Those amethysts would have stood out beautifully against one of her white evening gowns.

Camila was also wearing a couple of the Queen Mother's Cartier art deco bracelets which again, individually, are stunning but were lost on her last night. I've added a picture of the set of five (not from last night).

Personally I'm not keen on Melania's dress - those origami designs always make me think of a Sewing Bee transformation challenge.

I'm not keen on Melania's dress either. Although like a PP, I'm not a fan of bodices that stand up by themselves, this one isn't too bad on that score as it avoids pointy, peaky cleavage sculpturing, but the draping lower down doesn't work for me and from the side you can see the scaffolding.

You wouldn't want to wake up to find him in your shower, that's for sure!

yes - I agree. I quite like some structural gowns and I think it would be great if just the bodice but the skirt draping looks bulky, bunched and unflattering. Probably a dress that is hard to sit in as well which is tricky at a dinner.

Love Camilla’s dress, thought the necklace was atrocious with it, but thanks to @Serenster explanation of the history behind it, it now changes my whole perspective on that necklace 😀. She is looking amazing this trip.

I really don’t like the dress Melania wore, overly fussy and I didn’t think it was flattering at all.

Charles is doing amazing on this trip, he seems to be going down a storm, he looks very well.

Edited

I think the dress is beautiful (and looked especially nice in movement; the back of the skirt is a masterpiece), but I agree that the necklace was not a great choice. As soon as I saw it, I thought maybe she was wearing it as a sort of tiara substitute. A lot of the commentators here in the US were speculating whether she would wear a tiara, and there was some disappointment that she didn't. The late Queen wore one to the state dinner in 2007, but perhaps Camilla felt that as she is a consort not a queen regnant, it would not be appropriate.

They are both doing very well. On a light note, I loved that Charles name checked my state in his remarks at the state dinner (listing states named for British monarchs), and on a serious note, Camilla's work on behalf of survivors of domestic violence has been given press coverage, beginning with her meeting and talking with several prominent leaders of the movement at the party at the British Embassy.

Maireas · 29/04/2026 15:38

@CarolinaInTheMorning - it's good to know that Camilla's work on DV has got coverage.

I think it would have looked better to wear something like Queen Alexandra's Collier Resille Necklace (but without the coloured pendants) with that dress, if you're going for bling. More delicate but just as impressive.

I've not seen that one, @SqueakyDinosaur .
It's quite something!

I think it was in the Edwardians exhibition, @Maireas. It is spectacular, but also delicate, in the same way as the Boucheron honeycomb tiara is.

I suppose what I mean is that something a bit less traditionally necklacey would have been good. One of the Fringe tiaras taken off its frame and worn upside-down would have been fabulous too - at least one of them is designed to make this possible.

Maireas · 29/04/2026 16:11

Yes, good points. 💎

The amethysts may have looked better with the dress in real life - I thought they looked better in this photo, where their colour was more obvious.

I love Ivanka Trump’s dress. Such a pretty colour. I see that Lauren Sanchez has got her ‘tits out for the boys’ again. 🙄

I think they probably looked brighter when they caught the light.

I love Ivanka’s dress. Camilla’s necklace is magnificent but needed a different dress.

I like Melania’s dress but agree it may not be comfortable for a dinner.

frugalkitty · 29/04/2026 17:25

I don't think the necklace worked with the dress either, it would have looked better with a lavender or amethyst gown but I did wonder if it was chosen as a subtle reminder that the necklace is about as old as the US. Loved KC's speeches too.
