How do full-time workers manage weekday-only hair appointments?

I work Mon-Fri, recently moved house and tried a local salon. Hairdresser was nice, but made a point that she only worked 1 Saturday a month if necessary for those that work. I thought a mobile hairdresser might be more flexible but she doesn't work any weekends but offers a slightly later midweek option- once a month. Her reasoning was also for people that work.

I did years of shift work and appreciate many people don't want to work weekends, but surely there are people getting their cut that work full time? I already colour it myself so its just the odd trim and bow dry I want. What do others do? Should I just keep trying local places?

I block my diary and I work the hours at another time. I’m lucky to have a job that as long as I manage the work no one questions if I have an appt every so often.

I also try to utilise the late night where I can. I usually have a 4pm slot and am done for 6/7

Sunshineandrainbow · 15/04/2026 21:29

I tend to book 1 hour leave from work and go to a 4pm appt.

Take my laptop and wfs (work from salon)

I only get trims now, so I can book in lunch time and be back at work on time afterwards. When I cared about how it looked and had more things done so the appointment was longer I was only able to go to salons which were open weekends.

ThePoshUns · 15/04/2026 21:35

I have a mobile hairdresser who comes to me at 7am so am done in time to start work. Otherwise I use my flexi and take a few hours off.

Rosebud987 · 15/04/2026 21:37

I take my laptop and work from the salon if you’re allowed to do that it’s a good use of time whilst your colour develops

tofumad · 15/04/2026 21:39

I ask for the first appointment of the day at 8am. The salon is near work.

LumpySpaceCow · 15/04/2026 21:41

Agile/flexible working - work early/late, block my calendar for thr appointment and maybe answer a few emails during the appointment.

DiscoDown18 · 15/04/2026 21:44

Sometimes I have an evening appointment and sometimes - like tomorrow - I'm using flexitime. My boss definitely does the same as I've seen it marked in her diary!

BridgetJonesV2 · 15/04/2026 21:47

The salon I go to does 2 evenings a week, but I do book 3 appointments ahead to make sure that I can get an appointment. The stylist I go to only works alternate Saturdays and I can't bear the noise levels when the salon is full, it's lovely after 5pm as only a few stylists stay on and it's quiet.

Inevergotthatfar · 15/04/2026 21:53

My hairdresser is open a couple of evenings a week

k1233 · 15/04/2026 21:53

I book my appointments about 20 weeks in advance to get weekends. I go roughly every 10 weeks, so every visit I'm booking my appointment after the next one, so I have 2 future bookings in place. Works well. If I need to change I contact my hairdresser as early as possible and she tries do a shuffle or puts me at the top of the cancellation list. Usually we can work out an alternative but I'm very flexible if I'm trying to reschedule.

7238SM · 15/04/2026 21:54

Thanks everyone. I didn't expect so many replies so quickly!

-I'm now in a coastal town in the SE. Not a city, but not rural. I suspect many locals are retired, possibly SAHM or work part time.
-Yes, there are salons open on Saturdays, but ideally I'd like to have the same hairdresser majority of the time.

-I went to a salon and also tried a mobile lady. 2, separate hairdressers, not the same one as someone suggested
-No, I wouldn't use up a day of annual leave to get a hair trim

Sometimes work is flexible so a longer lunch break could be an option mid week. I shall also check which salons have later weeknight hours. My main issue is booking ahead. I wrongly assume I can get an appointment say next week, but places here seem to booked weeks in advance, so clearly are in demand. Thanks everyone.

Thursday evening. This is the same as my dentist.

ElleintheWoods · 15/04/2026 22:05

I can usually get my appointments in around working hours, eg 5pm appointment.

However for a bigger job (I do have 4-hour appointments regularly), Saturday or annual leave/flexi.

I’m a little confused about the ‘those that work’ comment. What % of women in the UK do not work full-time? I honestly thought that working FT was the standard lifestyle, but thinking about it, maybe it isn’t?

My friend is a hairdresser and all her clients have demanding jobs, save the odd retired person. You need to have a bit of money to spend £200 on hair regularly!

drspouse · 15/04/2026 22:06

I'm not that organised generally but I always book my hairdressers at the previous appointment. So you could do that if you want a Saturday.
I do now work part time but I also sometimes book a day off just for me. My AL year ends in Oct so I often use a day or two in Sept and have a massage or go for a bike ride.

MagneticSquirrel · 15/04/2026 22:13

Saturdays and book my next appointments when I pay so I get time and stylist that I want.

EmmaStone · 15/04/2026 22:17

I’ve started going to a salon near my office, so can go in lunch hour (I have easy hair, no colour, so easily done and dusted in an hour). I now basically have various services within an easy walk of my office, but have to pay a bit of a premium for city services that I would for similar nearer home (although I have to say, new hairdresser and nails lady run rings around my previous ones).

Theimpossiblegirl · 15/04/2026 22:19

My hairdresser does one later evening per week. Then she takes a weekday off so she can do Saturday mornings. I'd shop around for flexibility in your case.

BlackCat14 · 15/04/2026 22:21

Ive never in all my days come across a salon that is closed for the whole weekend…luckily!

RaininSummer · 15/04/2026 22:35

I work full time and usually book an appointment about 3pm and take Flexi or annual leave for the afternoon. It's only once every few months.

StrictlyCoffee · 15/04/2026 22:37

Surely most hairdressers are open on Saturdays?

westcott · 15/04/2026 22:38

I go on a Saturday. Booked in advance.
